Prolonged sitting can slow down metabolism and decrease insulin sensitivity, making people more susceptible to cancer and type 2 diabetes. Interrupting these periods with movement appears to reset the body’s metabolic clock.

The study’s lead researcher, Frederick Ho, notes that current guidelines focus heavily on moderate or vigorous exercise. However, this research suggests that light movement should not be ignored. In fact, it may play a crucial role in reducing disease risk.

In practical terms, this means rethinking our approach to sitting and moving throughout the day. Rather than viewing these activities as separate entities, we might consider them as part of a continuum – with periods of activity punctuating longer stretches of rest.
