Ancient Roman Soldiers Buried in Mass Grave Uncovered After 1,700 Years

A team of researchers from European archaeological institutions has made a groundbreaking discovery in the ancient city of Mursa - modern-day Osijek in Croatia. Seven skeletons found in a mass grave have been identified as belonging to Roman soldiers who lived around 1,700 years ago.

The male skeletons were discovered during excavations in 2011 and were initially thought to be ordinary burials. However, DNA analysis and other forensic tests revealed that the men were most likely Roman soldiers. The researchers believe that the soldiers were killed in battle and buried in a mass grave due to the "Crisis of the Third Century," a period of violence and conflict in the Roman Empire.

The skeletons showed various injuries, including blunt force trauma, puncture wounds, and signs of pulmonary disease. Analysis of their diets revealed that they were mostly vegetarian but also consumed some meat and seafood.

The discovery was significant not only because of the age of the skeletons but also due to the rarity of mass graves in the Roman Empire. According to historians, mass burials were typically used in extreme situations such as war and natural disasters.

Mursa, where the soldiers were buried, was an important city in the Roman Empire that played a significant role in trade and crafts. The city's history has been extensively studied by archaeologists, who have uncovered various ancient civilizations sites in the area.

The researchers believe that the mass grave where the soldiers were found would have originally been a water-well, which is why they were likely thrown into it before being covered with soil.

Can you believe it? 1700 years old and still giving us clues about life back then ๐Ÿ˜ฒ! I mean, these guys weren't just ordinary Romans, they were actual soldiers who fought in battles and were buried together like a team ๐Ÿค. It's crazy to think that their diets were all about veggies, but also had some meat and seafood - not much different from ours, right? ๐Ÿด. And the injuries on those skeletons are insane... blunt force trauma, puncture wounds... it's like they went through hell ๐Ÿ’€. I love how researchers are still discovering new things about ancient civilizations, like Mursa was super important in trade and crafts ๐Ÿ“ˆ. The idea of a water-well turning into a mass grave is wild too - who knew? ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿคฏ I mean, can you believe it? These guys got buried alive ๐Ÿ’€ 1700 years ago! And now we get to see what their lives were like. It's crazy how much we can learn from ancient stuff like this. I'm talking diet, injuries, the whole deal ๐Ÿค”. Vegetarian but also had some meat and seafood, huh? That's a good point about mass graves too - you don't usually find out that kind of info until now ๐Ÿ˜ฒ. It's all about context, right? Like, Mursa was super important back in the day, so it makes sense they'd get buried like heroes ๐Ÿ™. But what really gets me is how a water-well turned into a mass grave ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Who knew? Anyway, this discovery just goes to show you how much we still got to learn from history ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ”.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this lol ๐Ÿ˜‚. I mean, can you imagine living 1,700 years ago and then getting killed in battle? Like, what even was your life like back then? ๐Ÿคฏ It's crazy to think that these guys were just regular soldiers who got caught up in a huge war.

And the fact that they were mostly vegetarians but still ate meat and seafood is wild. I guess you could say they were a bit more laid-back about their diet than we are today ๐Ÿ˜‚. But seriously, it's amazing what archaeologists can discover from these ancient civilizations. It feels like they're giving us a glimpse into a whole different world.

I'm also weirded out by the idea that this mass grave was probably a water-well at some point ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, it's not every day you hear about people being buried in a water source. But hey, that's just how things were back then, right?

I'm so fascinated by this discovery ๐Ÿ’ก. Can you imagine what life was like for these Roman soldiers 1,700 years ago? ๐Ÿคฏ They were mostly veggie-eaters, but had a bit of meat and seafood on the side ๐Ÿด. And those injuries... wow ๐Ÿ˜ท. It's crazy to think they were killed in battle and buried together in mass graves during such a turbulent time in Roman history ๐Ÿ’”. I'm loving how archaeologists are always uncovering new stories from the past ๐Ÿ“š. The fact that this city was super important in trade and crafts makes me wanna learn more about it ๐Ÿค”. And the idea of them being thrown into a water-well before being covered up... that's wild ๐ŸŒŠ!

omg can you believe this? ๐Ÿคฏ i mean 1700 years old and people are still dying in wars ๐Ÿ˜” and we're just now finding out about it ๐Ÿ“š like what's the point of studying history if we don't learn from it? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ anyway, these soldiers were veggie-lovers apparently ๐Ÿฅ—๐Ÿ” i mean who knew ancient roman guys liked pizza too ๐Ÿ• lol but seriously its cool to see them find out more about our ancestors and how they lived back then ๐Ÿค“ [www.archaeology.org](http://www.archaeology.org)

๐Ÿคฏ 1,700 yrs old & still got some sick injuries ๐Ÿค•

Roman soldiers' diets were all about veggies, who knew? ๐Ÿฅ—๐Ÿ˜‚

Mass graves are super rare, but I guess war can be brutal ๐Ÿ’€

just imagine livin in a world where ur ancestors were literally throwed into a mass grave 1700 yrs ago ๐Ÿ˜‚ what kinda life was that? and thats not all, the fact that these soldiers were mostly veggie eaters ๐Ÿฅ— is wild, i mean who knew ancient romans were like hipsters or somethin' lol.

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ I'm like so fascinated by this discovery! I mean, can you even imagine being buried in a mass grave after fighting in battle? ๐Ÿค• It's crazy to think that these Roman soldiers went through that and are now just skeletons 1700 years later ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. And the fact that they were mostly vegetarian is wild, like who knew ancient Romans weren't all meat-eaters? ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŒฑ. I'm also super intrigued by the idea of a water-well being converted into a mass grave, it's like, what a dark history, right? ๐Ÿ’€.

omg can you even imagine having to dig up bones of people who died 1700 yrs ago lolol what's crazy is how much info they found out about these soldiers' diets - like veggie heavy but not all the way vegan also some meat and seafood ๐Ÿคฏ i think it's wild that historians are like "mass graves were rare in roman empire" bc of wars & disasters ๐Ÿค

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this ancient Roman soldier discovery ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ฒ I mean, can you even imagine being buried in a mass grave after 1,700 years? It's like something out of a movie! The fact that they found those injuries on the skeletons is just mind-blowing... blunt force trauma and puncture wounds, yikes! And the diet analysis is crazy too - mostly vegetarian, but also some meat and seafood. I wish we knew more about what their lives were like before the "Crisis of the Third Century"... did they have families? What was daily life like in Mursa back then? ๐Ÿค” It's fascinating stuff!

idk how cool is it to find out that those old roman soldiers had some major health issues lol like who knew ancient people were vegan for most of their lives?

i'm also thinking, what's the deal with mass graves? sounds super depressing that they just threw all these guys in a hole like that. but at the same time, it makes sense given the 'crisis of the third century' and stuff.

anyway, i think its awesome that archaeologists are still able to uncover some of this history. you'd think with all the tech we have today they'd be able to find more info about the ancient civilizations tho

OMG u guyz! ๐Ÿคฏ I cant even bleeve this!!! they found ancient roman soldier graves and its like, 1700 yrs old!! ๐Ÿค–๐Ÿ‘€ the injuries on the skeletons are so brutal, blunt force trauma and puncture wounds lol wat kinda battlefield r they fightin in?! ๐Ÿน๏ธ also i read that they were mostly veggie but had some meat & seafood ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŒฑ wut kinda diet r u guys talkin bout?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ btw did u no mursa was super important in the roman empire?? ๐Ÿ’ก so cool!!

I donโ€™t usually comment but I just found this so cool ๐Ÿคฏ! Can you imagine being an archaeologist and stumbling upon something that old? 1,700 years is like, ancient history right? ๐Ÿ˜‚ And the fact that they were mostly vegetarian but also had meat and seafood in their diet is wild. I mean, who knew Roman soldiers were hipsters?

The whole thing about them being thrown into a water-well before being buried makes sense now ๐Ÿ’ง. It's like they took the ultimate shortcut to the afterlife ๐Ÿ˜‚. And the DNA analysis and forensic tests are pretty mind-blowing too ๐Ÿคฏ.

I donโ€™t know what it is, but I just love learning about old stuff like this ๐Ÿ’ญ. Itโ€™s like uncovering a secret world that we used to live in. Anyway, congrats to the researchers for making this groundbreaking discovery! ๐Ÿ‘

man... thinkin about those rome soldiers ๐Ÿคฏ its crazy to think about them gettin laid low in battle & buried all together after 1700 years lol... and the injuries on their skeletons? brutal ๐Ÿ’€ they had blunt force trauma, puncture wounds... it's like they were thrown into that mass grave without a second thought ๐Ÿšฎ anyway, i guess its awesome that these researchers found out more about what life was like for them back in the day ๐Ÿ“š now we know they weren't all meat-eaters like we are today ๐Ÿ˜‚ and its interesting how mursa used to be an important city... must've been pretty cool to live there in ancient times ๐ŸŒ†
