The article discusses the process of creating a new artwork from a decommissioned Confederate monument in Charlottesville, Virginia. The monument was removed in 2017 after protests at the Unite the Right rally, which turned violent and resulted in the death of one person. The city council received proposals to obtain the statue, including one from an arts organization led by Hamza Walker and Kara Walker.

The article describes how the statue was cut into its constituent parts due to its large size and weight, with a third of it being removed so that it could be transported on two trucks. To create the new artwork, Kara Walker worked with fabricator Mike Koller to make a 3D digital scan of the statue, which allowed her to visualize potential configurations.

The final form of the new sculpture, titled "Unmanned Drone," is much simpler than the original and defies its original intention as a heroic figure. The article notes that Kara Walker's goal was to disrupt the original meaning and message of the statue, creating something that "wholly defies the original intention of the object."

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing 🤯. So the city just decides to turn an old Confederate monument into some sort of avant-garde art piece? It's like, I get it, Kara Walker and Hamza Walker are super talented artists who want to challenge our perceptions of history and power structures. But at the same time, isn't this just a fancy way of erasing a painful part of American history? Like, don't we need to confront those painful moments head-on instead of trying to cover them up with some cool art project? And what's next? Turning old slave prisons into trendy coffee shops? It just feels like the wrong move to me 😐.

I'm low-key obsessed with this new artwork they're doing with the old Confederate monument 🤯. I mean, can you imagine how much emotional labor went into taking down a symbol like that? It's no joke. And now, Kara Walker is literally redefining what it means to be "heroic" by turning the statue on its head (literally). The final sculpture, "Unmanned Drone," is so subtle yet powerful – I love how it subverts our expectations of what a symbol should represent 🤖. It's like, we need more art like this that challenges our assumptions and makes us uncomfortable 😳. Plus, can you imagine the conversations it'll spark at museums and galleries? Game. Changer. 👀

omg I feel like this is such a cool idea 🤩... I mean who would've thought taking down all that history and controversy and turning it into art lol. Kara Walker is definitely a genius 👏 for trying to create something from the wreckage, but at the same time it's kinda wild how much it's been altered from its original form... like is this still even recognizable as the Confederate monument now? I think what's interesting too is that she wanted to disrupt the meaning and message, which makes me wonder if this is some kind of commentary on how our perceptions can be manipulated by historical symbols 🤔

just saw this...the way they turned a symbol of hate into something new is kinda inspiring? not erasing history but giving it a new perspective. Kara Walker's all about subverting expectations and making people uncomfortable. i guess some people are still salty about the whole thing, but i think its cool that we're having these conversations about what art can be

omg u can imagine how surreal it is to see that massive statue just lying there in a field now 🤯. i mean, who would have thought that after all those years, people would even care about what happens to it? anyway, i think kara walker's idea of creating this new sculpture, "Unmanned Drone", is pretty cool 💡. like, she took something that was meant to represent some kind of pride or heroism and turned it into something that's literally the opposite 🤖. i'm curious to see how people react to it now that it's on display... will they be like "wait, what's this supposed to be?" or will they just appreciate the artistry behind it? 🤔

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s kinda cool how this new sculpture is like, totally turning the original statue on its head 🤯. I mean, can you imagine walking up to a massive Confederate monument and seeing something that looks like a giant metal spider staring back at you? It's like Kara Walker took all the hate and anger from 2017 and turned it into something beautiful (in a weird way). And I love how she worked with Mike Koller to create this 3D digital scan of the statue - it shows how much thought went into creating something entirely new. It’s also interesting that the final sculpture is so different from the original, it's like it's saying "you can't control my story". 🚫💥

omg I'm so curious about this new sculpture they made from the old Confederate monument in Charlottesville... 🤯 did you see the pics of it? it's literally like a big metal bird or something and Kara Walker is a total genius for turning it into something that kinda mocks the original intention of it... I mean, can't we just get rid of all that racist history already? anyway, I'm gonna check out this artist Hamza Walker & Kara Walker more - sounds interesting! https://www.theverge.com/2025/02/15/22134242/kara-walker-confederate-monument-art-installation

omg can't believe what they did with that old statue 🤯 now it's like a weird art thingy and I kinda get why Kara Walker wanted to do this...I mean who needs a giant symbol of slavery history anyway? 😒 but at the same time it feels like they're just being super pretentious and trying too hard to be edgy 💁‍♀️ i guess its kinda cool that they cut it up and made it into a drone tho 🤖 thats actually really interesting from a technical standpoint. I'd love to see more pics of the final product tho 👀 did Kara Walker's team have any input from local historians or anyone who actually cares about the history behind the statue?

I just can't get over this... what's up with these Confederate monuments, anyway? 🤔 They're like, super divisive. I mean, some people think they're important pieces of history, but others see them as symbols of racism and oppression. Like, who gets to decide what we remember and how we remember it?

And can we talk about the process of creating this new artwork? 🎨 It's wild that Kara Walker had to get a 3D digital scan made just because the statue was too big and heavy to move on its own. That sounds like some crazy tech wizardry right there! But at the same time, I'm kinda disappointed that the final sculpture is so different from the original... did she really have to take everything apart just to make it not be a symbol of hate anymore?

I guess what I'm trying to say is... can we find ways to celebrate our complicated history without glorifying the bad stuff? 🤷‍♀️ It's like, how do we move forward when there's still so much baggage from the past?

I think it's kinda interesting how this Confederate monument got transformed into an art piece 🤯💡. I mean, you can't just leave it there as a reminder of a painful part of history... but at the same time, you don't wanna just destroy it like trash 😐. It's all about how to reinterpret and repurpose it in a way that sparks conversation 💬.

I'm not sure if Kara Walker's approach is gonna be too polarizing for some people, I mean, changing its meaning like that might make others feel uncomfortable 🤔. But hey, at least it's giving people something new to think about... or get upset about 😂? It's all part of the creative process, right? Can we expect more of these kinds of art pieces from historical symbols in the future? What are your thoughts on this whole thing?

Ugh, can't believe they're just reworkin' some messed up piece of history like this... 🤯 I mean, I get it, wanna use it as a symbol against racism and all that, but can't we just leave it alone? It's still a statue of someone who was involved in the worst kind of division. But at the same time, I guess it's kinda cool that Kara Walker is tryin' to turn it into somethin' new... this "Unmanned Drone" thing sounds pretty wild 🤖. Just hope she's not just gonna make it some kinda sick tribute to the original meaning...

Ugh, this new artwork is so messed up 🤢 it's like they took something meant to celebrate white supremacy and turned it into a drone... idk man what the point of this is. They cut it in half so it can be transported on trucks like it's some kind of trash, then Kara Walker has to digitally rework the whole thing just to "disrupt" its original message 🤦‍♀️ newsflash: it was already super problematic. I guess now it's just gonna sit somewhere and make people feel weird about a statue that already made them uncomfortable in 2017 😳

Ugh I'm still shook about this whole situation... like i remember watching the Unite the Right rally go down in 2017 on live tv my friends and i were all so divided we didn't know what to believe anymore fast forward to now and this new sculpture "Unmanned Drone" is literally a drone made out of parts of that old statue I mean it's kinda cool i guess but at the same time it's like they're just trying to erase history or something Kara Walker said she wanted to disrupt the original meaning but honestly it feels like they're just taking something painful and turning it into art without really confronting the pain of what happened

I was talking to my friend who's from Virginia and he said that even though the statue is gone a lot of people in his hometown still talk about it all the time it's like this weird scar on the city's soul i'm not saying I'm gonna go to Charlottesville anytime soon but at the same time I feel bad for Kara Walker trying to make art out of something so hurtful 🤷‍♀️
