The biggest hurdle to solving the shutdown has nothing to do with policy

Congress's inability to strike a deal on ending the government shutdown appears to be hindered by an insurmountable distrust issue between lawmakers from opposing parties.

This lack of trust is particularly evident in their inability to agree on whether they'll discuss reforms to the Affordable Care Act tax credits once the government reopens. Democrats have flatly rejected any promise that would only lead to future discussions, instead demanding immediate action.

The top two congressional Democrats, Schumer and Jeffries, are at odds with Republican leaders over this issue. The distrust is largely fueled by rescissions bills, which claw back congressionally allocated funds, including those for the US Agency for International Development and public broadcasting. Johnson has indicated that more rescissions may be on the horizon, further eroding trust.

Senators Murphy and Kim have expressed frustration with the Republicans' stance, viewing it as a "giant middle finger" to their efforts at negotiations. The distrust is particularly pronounced given the GOP's history of seeking to repeal and replace Obamacare, which has damaged their credibility on healthcare issues.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has warned that Republicans cannot guarantee votes for extending the subsidies, further exacerbating tensions. Murphy believes there's a "trust deficit" between the two parties and has expressed skepticism about the GOP's ability to address the issue.

The stalemate has put the shutdown fight in danger of becoming one of the longest in American history. Johnson has acknowledged that progress is being hindered by the distrust, which is a significant hurdle for lawmakers attempting to find common ground on this critical issue.

Ugh, can't we just get along?! 🤦‍♂️ The whole thing with the government shutdown and all these Congressional folks not trusting each other is really frustrating. I mean, they're basically playing politics as usual and it's affecting regular people who are already stressed out about having to deal with this mess.

I don't think Schumer or Jeffries have a right to hold Republicans hostage on this Affordable Care Act issue, though - it seems kinda unfair to expect them to just throw more money around without even discussing how to use it. And those rescissions bills? Like, what's the point of even having Congress if you're just gonna claw back funds whenever things get tough?

It's not like Republicans haven't messed up on healthcare before (come on, that whole repeal-and-replace thing was a total disaster), but can we please just focus on finding some middle ground here? This is America, after all - I thought we were supposed to be about compromise and working together, not just bickering and throwing tantrums. 🤷‍♂️

😕 it's so frustrating when politicians can't seem to work together 🤝 they're not even willing to have discussions about reforming the Affordable Care Act tax credits and that's a huge part of why people are struggling with healthcare costs 💸 I get that Democrats want immediate action, but come on, can't we just talk about it for once? 🤷‍♀️ It feels like the Republicans are trying to shut down any possibility of finding common ground because they're too scared to admit they might not have all the answers 💡 Meanwhile, this government shutdown is going on and people are losing their jobs, food stamps, and other benefits 🚫 it's just not right 👎

This whole thing with the government shutdown and no one wanting to budge is kinda ridiculous 🤦‍♂️. It's like they're all stuck in their own little bubbles not listening to each other anymore. I mean, come on, can't we just have a calm conversation about how to help people who need it? The fact that Schumer and Johnson are at odds over this tax credit thing is just a huge roadblock 🚧. And what's with all the rescissions bills? It feels like they're just trying to prove a point. I don't think anyone's really winning here, except maybe for some lobbyists who love being in the middle of it all 💸. We need some real leaders who can put aside their differences and work together. Until then, we're stuck with this mess 🤦‍♂️💔.

It's crazy how hard it is to get these guys to work together 🤯. I think it's really frustrating for Schumer and Jeffries that Republicans are holding out for a promise of future discussions when they're already pushing for immediate action. It just seems like a big cycle of mistrust - Democrats don't trust Republicans will keep their word, but then Republicans want them to make concessions without knowing if those concessions will be taken seriously in the future.

I also think it's interesting that Murphy and Kim are talking about a "trust deficit" between parties. Is that even a thing? Can you really build up trust overnight? I think what's happening here is that both sides have done some pretty shady stuff in the past (like Republicans trying to repeal Obamacare), so it's hard for them to just start trusting each other out of the blue.

It's like, they need to find common ground on this tax credit issue ASAP or else the shutdown fight is going to drag on forever 🕰️. And with the rescissions bills and all that, it's getting really complicated and messy. I hope someone can come up with a solid plan that addresses everyone's concerns... but until then, it's just more of the same 😒

This whole government shutdown thingy is just another example of how politics gets in the way of actually getting stuff done 🤯. I mean, Democrats are right to be skeptical about Republicans' intentions, especially with that healthcare history and all 💸. But at the same time, Schumer and Jeffries should also show some flexibility - they can't let the GOP dictate every move on this one 🔄. It's like they're playing a game of chicken where everyone loses 🚗. And what's up with the rescissions bills? Are we really gonna keep messing around with funds for the US Agency for International Development and public broadcasting? 🤦‍♂️ Can't we find some common ground on this one?

I mean can't they just talk to each other like normal adults? It's been going on for weeks and it's getting ridiculous. Schumer and Jeffries are already at war with the Republicans over this ACA thing, what's next? I think Schumer has a point about the trust deficit, but on the flip side, Republicans have been hurt by Democrats' vetoes in the past. The GOP's stance on healthcare is shot, so it's not surprising they're trying to save face. This shutdown is going to drag on for ages if they can't find some middle ground 🤦‍♂️

ugh, don't even get me started on this gov't shutdown 🙄🤦‍♂️! it's like they're more worried about "winning" than actually helping ppl 🤑👎 Schumer & Jeffries are literally at each other's throats over the ACA tax credits and it's just so... frustrating 😩 Meanwhile, Sen Murphy & Kim are calling out the GOP for being super unreasonable 🤬 and John Thune is all like "we can't guarantee votes"... what even is that? 🤷‍♂️ like, can't we just work together for once?! 🤝 this whole thing is just a mess 🎉

ugh I'm so tired of all these politicians playing hardball over healthcare 🤦‍♂️ it's like they're more interested in scoring points than actually helping people. Schumer and Jeffries are right to be frustrated with the Republicans' stance, but at the same time, I feel like Schumer is being a bit too inflexible on this one - can't they see that some progress is better than nothing? 🤔 and what's up with all these rescissions bills? it feels like they're just using them as leverage to get ahead in negotiations... meanwhile, people are still getting hurt by the shutdown 😩
