Disappointment Lingers as Con Artist Receives Short Sentence in Northern Ireland

A US podcaster and author who played a crucial role in bringing to justice a notorious con artist known as the "Queen of the Con" expressed disappointment at her relatively short sentence. Marianne "Mair" Smyth, 56, was convicted of defrauding four mortgage advice customers out of more than $155,000 in Northern Ireland.

Johnathan Walton, who chronicled his own victimization by Smyth and exposed her deceitful tactics on his podcast, Queen of the Con: The Irish Heiress, felt let down by the court's lenient sentence. "This is a woman who deserves to live the rest of her days in confinement – away from the public and away from the opportunity to scam anyone ever again," Walton said in a statement.

Smyth was found guilty of swindling her victims, including a Northern Irish man who paid her £72,570 for a buy-to-let house that never existed. She also impersonated actress Jennifer Aniston to bilk a producer out of millions of dollars. Walton's reporting led police to Smyth's whereabouts in Maine, where she was arrested on February 23, 2024.

The court's decision to award Smyth only four years in prison has raised questions about the severity of her punishment. Walton believes that many people remain unaware of Smyth's true nature and the devastating impact she can have on innocent victims. "I fear many people lack the complete and accurate picture of just who [she] really is and the devastation she is capable of wreaking on unsuspecting people," he said.

Smyth was flown to Northern Ireland from the US in July 2024, where she was tried and convicted of her crimes. Her lawyer's statement claimed that the sentence would "send a clear message" about the consequences for those involved in scamming hard-working people. However, Walton's reaction suggests that many still feel that Smyth received an inadequate punishment for her heinous crimes.

I dont think 4 yrs is enough for someone who scammed people out of millions 🤔. Im all for rehabilitation but this woman clearly showed no remorse and was just looking to get back on the streets ASAP 💸. Id rather see her locked up longer, especially since she was able to bilk innocent ppl out of so much cash. Its not like she had a heart attack or anything while she was in custody, just give us some peace of mind that she cant hurt anyone else for a bit more 🕰️.

ugh this is wild how can they give her only 4 yrs? she scammed ppl outta like a million dollars 🤑 and hurt so many lives and yet the judge gives her a slap on the wrist 🤷‍♀️ it's just not fair at all and i'm not surprised johnathan walton is upset about it he exposed this con artist on his podcast and brought her to justice and now she's getting away with a tiny sentence 😡

omg u wont believe this just read about the 'queen of con' marianne smyth gettin 4 yrs prison sentence lol what a joke i mean yeah she scammed ppl outta $155k thats some serious damage but 4 yrs is like, child's play 🤣 i dont think its fair to the victims who lost so much i feel bad for johnathan walton who spent all that time investigatin her and exposin her scams on his podcast. at least he got to be the hero tho 👏 anyway, clearly more work needs to be done to hold these con artists accountable 🤑

I just heard about this con artist getting a relatively short sentence and I gotta say, I'm not surprised. It's like she thought she was above the law or something 🤷‍♂️. Four years in prison seems like a joke considering all the people she scammed out of their hard-earned cash. I mean, can you imagine how many innocent folks are out there who could've been helped with that kind of money? It's just not fair to those victims who have to live with the emotional fallout of being scammed by someone as cunning and deceitful as this woman.

And what really gets my goat is that her lawyer said the sentence would send a message about consequences for scamming, but it doesn't seem like the judge actually listened. It's like they wanted to be seen as tough on crime or something 🙄. Newsflash: giving someone four years in prison isn't exactly going to deter others from trying to pull off similar scams. I wish Johnathan Walton had stuck around for sentencing and told them how it really feels 😒.

man... i dont get it 🤔 why does the court think 4 yrs is enough for someone who scammed ppl out of millions?? 🤑 she sounds like a total predator to me 😬 and johnathan walton's right on point - people need to know about her true nature before they become victims too 👊 i mean, whats next? are we gonna let her out early cuz she's been good or something? 😒 this whole thing just feels so unfair 🤷‍♀️

😒 come on man, 4 yrs? thats like 1 season of a podcast 📺🤦‍♂️ she got off easy, imo. i cant believe johnathan walton is even surprised 🤔. she bilked ppl outta millions 💸 and caused so much emotional distress 😩. its not just about the money, its about the trust and dignity she ruined 🙅‍♂️. prison shd be a lot harsher imo 👮‍♀️🚔

I'm really frustrated with this whole thing... Four years in prison for scamming over 155k from innocent people? That's just not right 🤦‍♀️. I mean, I know the lawyer said it would "send a clear message" but to me, that just comes across as like, we're gonna let her off easy so everyone else knows better next time 😒. The fact is, she's been able to scam people for years and now she's getting a slap on the wrist 🤷‍♂️. And it's not like she's even showing any remorse or anything... just that she's "grateful" for the sentence 💁‍♀️. Give me a break! 🚫

I was just thinking, have you guys tried that new coffee shop downtown? I mean, I know it's not exactly near here but I went there with some friends last weekend and OMG their cold brew is insane! 🤯 I swear, I could drink the whole pot by myself. And don't even get me started on their pastries... I had this amazing strawberry tart that just melted in my mouth. Anyway, back to Smyth... yeah, it's crazy how some people can talk the talk but walk the walk all wrong, you know? Like, she totally played her victims and got away with it for so long. And now she gets a slap on the wrist compared to what I think she deserves. Four years is like, a blink of an eye in prison terms, especially when you're talking about someone who's already proven themselves to be a master manipulator...

I just can't believe the sentence for this con artist Marianne Smyth 🤯. I mean, she swindled people out of over $155k and you're giving her 4 years in prison? That's like saying a little white lie is okay, as long as it's not caught 😒. Johnathan Walton's podcast exposed all the details and now we know the full extent of Smyth's deceit. It's not about sending a message, it's about making sure she can't hurt anyone else 🚫. I'm just so frustrated that people still don't get how serious this is 💔. We need to raise awareness about these scammers and make sure they're held accountable 💪.

I'm not surprised by this outcome 🤔... I mean, we all know that Marianne "Mair" Smyth is just a complex person with some mistakes in the past 💁‍♀️. I think the judge tried to balance justice and compassion at the same time ⚖️. Four years isn't even a harsh sentence for someone who's already done their community service 🙏. Johnathan Walton is just being dramatic about it 😒... I mean, have you seen her transformation from con artist to "reformed" person? It's like she's been to some kind of therapy or something 💆‍♀️. Let's not forget that Smyth has taken responsibility for her actions and is willing to make amends 🙏. Maybe we should be focusing on rehabilitation rather than harsh punishment? 😊

I'm really frustrated with the sentence she got 😒. I mean, $155k is a lot of money and she basically ruined these people's lives #NotEnoughJustice. I've listened to Johnathan Walton's podcast about his own experiences with Smyth and it's shocking how brazen she was #ConArtistTakedown. She impersonated Jennifer Aniston?! That's just sickening 🤢. Four years in prison is a joke, especially considering what she's done #ScamArtistNoMore. I'm glad Walton's reporting helped bring her to justice, but the sentence should've been harsher #JusticeForVictims. Smyth deserves to rot for what she's done, not get a slap on the wrist #ConArtistDeservesToPay. The public needs to know more about people like Smyth and how they operate, so we can protect ourselves better 💡.

I just saw the funniest video of a cat trying to 'help' its owner with grocery shopping . it was this silly cat wearing a tiny shopping basket on its head and trying to push a cart around... lolol I mean what even is that? 🐈🛍️ anyway back to this con artist stuff, can you believe she thought impersonating Jennifer Aniston would fool people? like who does that? I need to try that at my next networking event 😂.

I'm really shocked by this whole thing 🤯. I mean, four years is like, a drop in the bucket compared to what she did. She's basically just getting a slap on the wrist and then back to freedom, which is just not right 💔. The fact that people are still unaware of her crimes and how she manipulated her victims is super concerning 😱. I think we need to do a better job of educating people about these types of scams so they can protect themselves. It's all too easy for someone like Smyth to take advantage of good people who just want to make a living 💸. The system definitely needs to be looked at and improved, IMHO 🤷‍♀️.

OMG u dont no wat i'm thinkin about dis case 🤯!! like johnathon walton said it all marianne smyth is such a menace and she got off scott free 😡!!! 4 yrs in prison? that's not even a slap on the wrist ppl deserve so much more for what she did 💔. she's like a mastermind con artist and now she's just gonna walk outta here and do it all again 🚫. im soooo disappointed in the court system right now 😩. we need to make sure justice is served and that ppl like smyth are held accountable 4 their actions 💪

you know i was just thinking about trying to make my own homemade pizza tonight 🍕👌 and i realized how much i love the smell of fresh basil in the kitchen it brings back memories of summertime and BBQs with friends 🤔 have you guys ever tried making your own pizza from scratch? it's way easier than you think, just use a good sauce and some mozzarella cheese and voila! 🍴

🤔 this sentence just dont feel right to me... i mean, $155k is a lot of money and 4 years should be enough time to think about what she did... 🤑 it's like the court didnt see how much damage she caused to all those people 💸👎

🤔 I'm really disappointed with the short sentence given to this con artist Marianne "Mair" Smyth. She scammed so many people out of a ton of cash and hurt so many lives, and now she's just going to get a slap on the wrist? 4 years is NOT enough time for someone who has committed such heinous crimes 🙅‍♀️. I mean, come on! This woman played on people's trust, pretended to be Jennifer Aniston, and stole from innocent victims... that's some serious karma right there 😒. What really gets me is that her lawyer thinks 4 years will "send a clear message" about the consequences of scamming? No way, dude 🚫. The message should be: if you're going to scam people, you'll face SERIOUS consequences 👮‍♀️. Otherwise, she's just going to get out and cause more harm 💸. Just saying...

I'm kinda surprised by the sentence, but I guess you could say it's a reminder that even with a system in place, there's always room for growth and improvement 🤔. I mean, four years isn't forever, right? And the fact that Johnathan Walton is still passionate about spreading awareness about Smyth's story shows that the impact of her actions will be felt long after she's served her time 💡. Plus, it's worth noting that she was eventually caught and brought to justice, which is a huge win for victims of scams everywhere 🙌. Maybe this sentence is an opportunity for us to focus on prevention and support for those who've been affected by Smyth's actions 🤝.

I'm so shocked by this sentence 🤯. Four years in prison is not enough for someone like Mair Smyth 😩. She scammed people out of over $155k and put them through such a traumatic experience 💸. I feel bad for the victims who are still dealing with the aftermath of her crimes 🤕. I wish Johnathan Walton could've gotten more closure from this sentence 👀. It's like, she's still free to roam around and scam people again... that's just not right 😡.
