US President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Colombian President Gustavo Petro, accusing him of being an "illegal drug leader" and threatening to cut off aid to the country unless he scales back on production of illicit narcotics.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed that Colombia's president is "strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs" across the South American nation. He also referred to Petro as a "low-rated and very unpopular" leader, warning that if he fails to close down his country's drug operations, the US will do it for him - and not in a nice way.
The US has long been critical of Colombia's handling of the cocaine trade, with the country being the world's largest exporter of coca leaves. However, Trump's comments have sparked outrage from Colombian officials, who condemned his remarks as "offensive" and a direct threat to their sovereignty.
President Petro responded furiously on social media, accusing Trump's government of assassination and demanding answers after the latest US strikes in Caribbean waters. He also accused the US of invading Colombia's national territory and killing innocent civilians, including a fisherman who was killed in a September strike.
The situation has sparked international concern, with human rights activists and legal experts condemning the US military actions as "murder on the high seas". The UN reported that coca leaf cultivation reached an all-time high last year, despite President Petro's efforts to combat it.
