I'm seeing a lot of people talking about this exhibit and I gotta say, it's super thought-provoking . They're taking these Confederate monuments that were once celebrated as symbols of Southern heritage and turning them into powerful statements about racism and white supremacy . It's crazy to think that some of these statues are actually being melted down or recontextualized as art, like Kara Walker did with the one she transformed into an "unmanned drone". The way they're challenging visitors to think critically about their own biases is really important, especially when it comes to Black mothers and families who have been disproportionately affected by systemic racism. I'm all for sparking conversations that make us uncomfortable , but also hope that we can learn from these conversations and grow as a society.
just saw this exhibit on removed confederate monuments & i'm kinda shook it's crazy how these statues were once proudly displayed in public spaces celebrating the US' racist past but now they're being reimagined as art pieces to challenge our perceptions what's wild is that kara walker literally transformed a confederate monument into an unmanned drone and i love how hamza walker & kara walker are using their platforms to bring about this change
"Seeing these Confederate monuments reimagined as art is like witnessing a war being won, but in our minds . It's a powerful statement about the legacy of slavery & racism – we gotta keep questioning our history."
omg I'm so confused about this exhibit ... like isn't it weird that they're putting all these old statues in a museum? can we really learn from them or is it just gonna be a bunch of old metal sitting there? but seriously, I feel bad for the people who lost their families because of those statues being taken down. like what if you were trying to have a family BBQ and some white supremacist dude shows up with a torch ... anyway, I'm glad they're using them to talk about racism tho , that's super important. but can someone explain to me how they melted down the statues? is it like, a big ol' furnace or something
