1/14: The Takeout with Major Garrett

A senior White House official told CBS News that the US military had taken control of Tehran's airport, which was being used as a staging ground for protests against the assassination of Qasem Soleimani. The move comes amid rising tensions between Iran and the US.

The news follows reports that Iranian protesters have taken over the US embassy in Baghdad and are demanding the release of an American contractor who was detained on terrorism charges.

Meanwhile, in Florida, Lt. Governor Jeanette Nuñez is expected to jump into the crowded governor's race after announcing her candidacy. Nuñez, a former House staffer, has already gained support from some prominent Republicans.

President Trump said that the killing of protesters in Iran was "stopping", but critics argue that it only escalated the violence. On social media, the hashtag #TrumpFailedIran trended as people expressed outrage over the actions taken by the US government.

The Takeout with Major Garrett airs on January 14, 2021

IM GOING CRAZY ABOUT THIS TURMOIL IN MIDDLE EAST!!! IT FEELS LIKE NOTHING IS HAPPENING TO STOP THE CYCLONE OF TERROR & POLITICAL CHAOS!!!! WHO DOES THE US THINK THEY'RE DEALING WITH OVER THERE???? 🤯🚨
the more i see, the more it feels like EVERY MOVE THEY MAKE IS MAKING THINGS WORSE INSTEAD OF BETTER!!! AND NOW THEY'RE GOING AFTER IRAN???? 🌪️ what's next, ANOTHER WAR??? 🚫
at the same time, i'm watching this florida election heat up and it's all about JEANNETTE NUÑEZ and her gov prospects...can we talk about something ELSE for a sec tho? 🤦‍♀️

idk about this airport thing... sounds like a big mess 🤔. taking control of someones airport? that's crazy talk. what's next? invading iran or something? 😳 and now protesters are at the US embassy in baghdad? seems like things are getting outta hand over there. and florida is gearing up for another governor's race? can we just focus on one thing at a time? 🙄

omg this whole thing is so crazy lol... i mean im not saying us military should be at iran airport but it sounds like things are getting super out of control 🤯. protesters takin over embassy in baghdad tho?? that's wild news. im all for gettin the american contractor released btw, thats a pretty heavy accusation to hold someone for.

and omg jeanne nuñez is runnin 4 governor in florida ?? shes got some good rep tho. i hope she can bring some sense to fl politics 🤞 president trump just dont understand how his actions affect the rest of us, it's like he's all "my way or the highway" and nobody else matters 😒. what a mess 🤦‍♀️

I'm so done with all this drama 🤯! First, we got our airport taken over by the military, now the embassy in Baghdad is being occupied by protesters... when will it end?! 😩 The US government needs to get their act together and figure out how to handle these situations without escalating tensions.

And what's up with President Trump saying that killing protesters was "stopping"?? Isn't that like, the most insensitive thing ever? 🙄 It just shows how out of touch he is with reality. I mean, it's not like taking over an airport or occupying an embassy was gonna make things better! 🚫

Anyway, Lt. Governor Nuñez looking good for the governor's race in Florida... we'll see how that plays out 🤔. One thing for sure, though: the US government needs some serious crisis management skills 👍

Man, this news is like a big ol' complex puzzle, you know? 🤯 On one hand, you gotta feel for the Iranian protesters who are fighting for their rights and demanding justice. It's like they're saying, "Hey, we won't be silenced!" 💪 But on the other hand, when you consider the US military taking control of Tehran's airport, it's like, "Whoa, slow down, partner! Let's not escalate things here." 🚫 I mean, think about it, if we're gonna take action, let's make sure we're thinking through the consequences, right? We gotta be like that wise old proverb says: "Think before you act." It's all about balance, you know? Finding that sweet spot where everyone gets heard and respected. 🌈

idk wut's goin on wit this us iran thing lol... think its just another excuse for trump to be all like "i'm in charge" 🤣 meanwhile, lt gov jeanette nuñez is tryna jump into the gov race and i gotta say, she seems pretty legit. not sure bout trump tho... all that killing protesters stuff is straight up messed up 🚫 i mean, u'd think he'd wanna avoid makin more enemies but idk... guess thats just how it goes down in dc 😐

So now we got US military taking control of Tehran's airport? Like what's next? That's just gonna fuel more tensions, you know? And meanwhile, Iranian protesters are takin' over the US embassy in Baghdad... that's some crazy stuff. I don't think it's a good idea to escalate things like this, but I guess that's how politics works. 🤔 I'm still tryin' to understand why President Trump thinks killin' protesters is gonna stop violence? Doesn't seem like the most effective strategy to me... 😒

🚨 I'm kinda low-key worried about this whole situation in Iran and the US 🤔. It feels like we're taking steps back instead of forward, you know? First, they assassinate Soleimani and now it's all about the protests and the embassy takeover... it just seems so reactive 🙄. And what about all these protesters who are getting hurt or arrested? Don't they deserve some respect? 💔 It's like we're not even listening to their concerns anymore. I'm all for maintaining national security, but can't we find a way to do that without escalating things like this? 🤷‍♂️

I'm calling BS on this one 🤔. A senior White House official telling CBS News that the US military took control of Tehran's airport? That sounds like something straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster to me 🎥. I need some concrete sources on this one before I believe it. Who is this "senior White House official" and what's their beef with Iran? And how come we're not hearing about this from other reputable news outlets? It seems like a convenient excuse for escalating tensions between the US and Iran, if you ask me 🤷‍♂️.

I'm low-key worried about Iran right now 🤯. Like, I get it, protests are a big deal and all that, but can't they just, like, talk to each other for once? 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, I guess when you've got history between two countries, things tend to escalate quickly. And let's be real, who needs Twitter drama when you have actual world leaders making moves? 😂 Trump's tweet about the protests being "stopped" is just, like, classic Trump 💁‍♀️. And on a completely unrelated note, has anyone seen Jeanette Nuñez's campaign speeches yet? I bet they're gonna be, like, totally fire 🔥!

I gotta say 🙄... this whole situation is super chaotic. First, the US military shows up at Tehran's airport like it owns the place? That's not a good look for our country. I mean, what's next, taking over the entire city? 😂 Meanwhile, protesters in Iran are basically holding the US embassy hostage... and no one's talking about that? It's like, priorities people! 🤷‍♀️

And don't even get me started on President Trump's comment 🙄... "stopping" violence is not how you fix things, dude. You gotta listen to experts and have a plan, not just swoop in and hope for the best. I'm surprised he didn't say something ridiculous like "I meant to do that 😂".

😩 just saw that Iran's protesters have taken over the US embassy in Baghdad... like what are we even doing here? 🤷‍♀️ I'm trying to keep my kids safe and secure while dealing with these global tensions 😬. How can taking control of Tehran's airport be a solution? Are there more innocent lives being put at risk? 🚫 The fact that protesters are demanding the release of an American contractor just highlights how volatile this situation is... 💥 Can we please talk about finding peaceful solutions to conflicts instead of resorting to military might? 😔

🤔 So what's going on here? It sounds like super tense times between Iran and the US. Took control of Tehran airport, yeah that's a big move. But didn't hear anything about how it's actually affecting the protests, you know if people are still out there taking over embassies?

And Trump saying the killing stopped? I'm not sure what kind of timeline he's on here. We all saw the vids of protesters getting hurt... it just seemed to keep going and going.

Also, Lt Gov Jeanette Nuñez jumping into the governor's race in Florida is interesting. She's got some cred with Republicans but can she really win?
