Apple has pulled its highly anticipated Apple TV series "The Hunt" from the schedule, citing allegations of plagiarism. The French drama, starring Cannes winner Benoît Magimel and two-time César winner Mélanie Laurent, was set to debut on December 3, but press releases and trailers have been removed from the platform.
Production company Gaumont has announced that they are conducting a thorough review into the series, amid concerns over intellectual property. "We take intellectual property matters very seriously," said a spokesperson for Gaumont in a statement.
The accusations stem from similarities between "The Hunt" and a 1976 film adaptation of the novel "Shoot". Written by Douglas Fairbairn in 1973, "Shoot" was a thriller that follows an ultra-macho hunter who becomes convinced that his rival group of hunters is going to target him. The plot bears striking similarities to Apple's series, which also revolves around Franck and his friends being stalked by another group of hunters.
In a bizarre turn of events, another high-profile Apple TV show, "The Savant", was also delayed earlier this year following the shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Jessica Chastain's series explores the work of top-secret investigators who track down white supremacists and other hate groups online to prevent violent attacks.
Chastain had publicly expressed her disappointment over the delay, stating that she and Apple were "not aligned on the decision to pause the release of The Savant". Despite this, the show remains without a new release date.
