Russia-Ukraine Conflict Intensifies in Donetsk Region
The Ukrainian military has reported little change to the front lines, but heavy fire from Russian forces at various parts of the front line in the Donetsk region. The General Staff stated that more than 45 enemy attacks were repelled over the past day, with a focus on Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mariinka.
According to Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of Ukrainian Land Forces, the Russian forces are trying to take full control over the city of Bakhmut, which has seen intense fighting. However, Ukrainian defense forces have repelled around 20 enemy attacks west of the city. Syrskyi also claimed that the enemy is weakening and trying to cover up its failures with new fakes about the capture of Bakhmut.
In the Donetsk area, some of the most intense fighting is occurring northwest and west of the city, where Russian forces have been trying to dislodge Ukrainian defenses in Avdiivka and Mariinka. The General Staff reported that around 20 assaults were repelled in this area. Oleksii Dmytrashkivskyi, spokesperson for the military in the Donetsk zone, stated that there have been operational successes in the area, including taking some positions.
However, Russian special forces have also been introduced in the area, and Denis Pushilin, leader of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic, claimed that Russian forces are still advancing in the Avdiivka direction. He described the situation as "extremely difficult" for the enemy, citing difficulties with terrain and weather conditions.
Despite the challenges, Ukrainian forces have reported significant losses for the Russians. Dmytrashkivskyi also noted that the enemy does not have the same amount of equipment and ammunition as they claim to be on a "diet" of assaults.
The situation remains critical in the Avdiivka area, where both sides are engaged in heavy fire. Social media videos showed the intensity of the fighting, with Russian forces surrounded on three sides by Ukrainian defenses.
