Brazil's Jailed Ex-President Bolsonaro Hits Head, Requests Hospital Visit Denied by Top Judge
Ex-president Jair Bolsonaro fell out of his prison bed while sleeping and hit his head on a piece of furniture in his cell. According to his wife Michelle Bolsonaro, the 70-year-old former right-wing leader will undergo exams despite being denied hospitalization.
In a statement, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes blocked Bolsonaro's request to immediately leave prison for medical tests at a hospital in Brasilia. Federal police officials reported that initial treatment was provided in the morning, with minor injuries and no need for further hospitalization found by a federal police doctor.
However, the judge said Bolsonaro's legal team can schedule exams in advance but must provide justification for procedures. The former president underwent several medical procedures last month to treat a hernia and hiccups before being discharged from hospital on January 1 and returned to the Federal Police Superintendency.
Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election. His request to visit the hospital raises concerns about his health condition, given that he has a history of hospitalizations related to an assassination attempt in 2018.
