Conservative activist sues Google over AI-generated statements

Conservative activist Robby Starbuck has taken Google to court, alleging that the tech giant's artificial intelligence systems have produced "outrageously false" information about him, including accusing him of being a child rapist and serial sexual abuser.

Starbuck's lawsuit claims that Google's AI systems, specifically its Bard large language model, generated defamatory statements in response to user queries, which were then delivered to millions of users. The plaintiff said he was shocked to learn in December 2023 that Bard had falsely connected him with white nationalist Richard Spencer and disseminated false sexual assault allegations against him.

Google has responded by stating that most of the claims were related to mistaken "hallucinations" from its Bard model, which it worked to address in 2023. However, Starbuck argues that this is no excuse for the harm caused by such misinformation, particularly when it can be used to target individuals with false and threatening accusations.

This lawsuit comes as concerns over AI-generated content continue to grow. Google's VEO3 AI video maker has been criticized for allowing users to create deceptive videos of news events, highlighting the ease with which misinformation can be spread through these technologies.

Starbuck is seeking at least $15m in damages from Google and has previously taken another tech giant, Meta Platforms, to court over similar allegations. The conservative activist hopes that his lawsuit will help ensure that AI systems are developed and used in a way that prioritizes transparency and accuracy, rather than being used to harm individuals with false information.

In recent months, there have been concerns about the potential for AI-generated content to be used to target and harass individuals online. The assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has highlighted these risks and underscores the need for greater accountability from tech companies when it comes to ensuring the accuracy and safety of their products.

omg u guyz this is like super serious stuff 🚨 robby starbuck is literally taking google to court over how their AI systems r producing false info about him including accusing him of child rape lol what kinda twisted world r we livin in where a tech company can just spew out hate speech and ppl dont even bat an eye 🀯 and its not like google is saying it wasnt intentional theyre like "oh its just hallucinations" nope that's still defamatory imo

and meanwhile meta platforms got away with somethin similar before starbuck went after them now hes trying to make a point about transparency and accuracy in AI development but its hard not 2 feel like he's just bein a troll lol anyway idk what the solution is but this case better get some attention

omg like google should defo have better quality control on their ai systems πŸ€–πŸ‘€ i mean how can they let this happen?? it's not just robby starbuck who got messed with, there are so many others who could be affected by these false info πŸ’” especially when it comes to sensitive topics like sex crimes, it's totally unacceptable 🚫 google needs to step up their game and make sure their ai is accurate and safe for everyone ⚠️

πŸ˜” I don't get why people are so quick to use AI without thinking about the potential consequences. It's like playing with fire, you never know what kind of damage you can cause. πŸš’ Google needs to take responsibility for their mistakes and make sure they're working on it. But $15m in damages seems like a lot... I mean, can't we just focus on fixing the problem instead of making the other guy pay? πŸ’Έ

This is a huge deal! Google's AI systems are getting way too much flak for this kinda stuff 😬 #GoogleAIfail I feel so bad for Robby Starbuck, his rep is totally ruined over some messed up info from Bard πŸ€–. The fact that it was spread to millions of users is just crazy πŸ’₯. This lawsuit is gonna make Google rethink their strategy on AI development and transparency, hopefully! πŸ’‘ And we need more accountability from tech giants when it comes to protecting people's online safety πŸ˜… #AIaccountabilitynow

πŸ€” I just don't get why Google's AI system can't just give more context or sources when something is wrong... like, a simple "I'm not sure" or "I couldn't find any info on this guy"... wouldn't that be better than spreading false info? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And what's with the lack of regulation in the AI industry? It feels like tech companies are just making it up as they go along... 😬

Starbuck's lawsuit makes sense to me, though. If AI-generated content can spread false info that harms people, who gets hurt then? Not Google or Meta, but real people with lives and families πŸ€•

I wish Starbuck would focus on getting better accuracy from these AI systems rather than just going after the companies πŸ’‘

I'm totally appalled by this situation 🀯. It's unconscionable that Google's AI systems have produced such outrageously false information about Robby Starbuck, putting his reputation and even his life at risk. The fact that these statements were delivered to millions of users is a clear indication of the dangers of unregulated AI-generated content. I mean, who's going to verify the accuracy of this stuff? πŸ€” It's a nightmare scenario, where someone can just type in a question and get a false response that can be used to harm or blackmail them.

We need to have some serious conversations about accountability and regulation when it comes to AI development and use. I'm not saying Google is malicious or trying to harm people, but they do have a responsibility to ensure that their systems are accurate and transparent. Meta Platforms has already faced similar allegations, so this lawsuit could be a turning point in the industry πŸ”„. Let's hope Robby Starbuck gets some justice and his damages are substantial πŸ’Έ.

I'm so worried about this Robby Starbuck case... 🀯 As a parent, I just want my kids to be protected online and not exposed to false info that can harm them or someone else. It's crazy that Google's AI system made such outrageous claims about him! πŸ’₯ And now he's suing for $15m in damages - that's a lot of money. πŸ€‘ But seriously, this lawsuit is highlighting the importance of transparency and accuracy when it comes to AI systems. As parents, we need to make sure our kids are taught critical thinking skills so they can spot fake news from real news. πŸ€“ It's also on us as a society to hold tech companies accountable for ensuring their products don't spread misinformation. πŸ™ I just hope this case leads to some real change and not just a bunch of empty promises from Google... 🀞

πŸ€” I'm totally with Robby Starbuck on this one, fam! πŸ™Œ AI is getting super powerful and we need to make sure it's used responsibly. Google's AI systems are like a big ol' wild west out there - they can spread false info faster than you can say "hallucination" πŸ˜‚. We've all been victims of online misinformation at some point, but this takes the cake because it's being perpetuated by a major player like Google.

I'm not saying I don't think AI has its benefits, 'cause it does! 🀝 But we need to hold companies accountable for ensuring their tech is accurate and safe. We can't just let anyone spread false info online without consequences. The fact that Starbuck took action against Meta Platforms shows he's not just whining about it - he's fighting for change.

We need more transparency in AI development, more accountability from these big players... and we need to educate ourselves on how to spot fake news! πŸ“ŠπŸ’» It's time to get smart about online safety and misinformation. Google should be doing better to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the first place! πŸ‘Ž

OMG this is crazy 🀯! I mean, who needs a lawsuit like this? Like seriously Robby Starbuck is trying to take on Google over AI-generated content... it's just not that serious. I get why he's upset but come on $15m in damages? That's just nuts πŸ’Έ

I feel for the guy and all but can't we just think about the bigger picture here? We're talking about AI systems that are still learning and improving, they're gonna make mistakes... it's not intentional. And what's the alternative? Just sit back and watch people spread misinformation left and right? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I'm all for transparency and accuracy but I think we need to take a step back and see how AI is gonna change the game before we start throwing lawsuits like this around. It's just not that simple 😬

OMG u guys 🀯, this is getting real πŸ”₯! I'm not surprised that Robby Starbuck took Google to court tho πŸ˜‚...I mean who wouldn't want $15m πŸ’Έ?! But seriously tho, if Google's AI systems can spew out false info like this, what's the point of even having them πŸ€”? And what's good for one person, a crazy liberal is bad for conservatives πŸ‘Š. I'm all for keeping those algorithms in check tho πŸ‘, we gotta make sure they're not spreading hate speech or anythin 😬...not on my watch πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ!

Ugh, like seriously? πŸ™„ Robby Starbuck is taking Google to court over this? I mean, come on, dude, it's not like he didn't sign up for this. He was a conservative activist, for crying out loud! He knew the risks of being online, especially with all these crazy conspiracy theories flying around.

And what really gets me is that he's claiming Google's AI systems are "outrageously false". Like, isn't that just a bit rich coming from someone who's been accused of being a child rapist and serial sexual abuser? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, no wonder Google's Bard model was spitting out some wild stuff.

And don't even get me started on the whole $15m in damages thing. Like, Robby, you want to play it that way? You're going to take a giant chunk of cash from Google and then what? Use it to make more YouTube videos about being a victim of fake news? πŸ™„ Please.

And can we talk about how this entire situation just highlights the need for better moderation on these platforms? I mean, sure, AI-generated content is a concern, but come on, humans can be pretty messed up too. Maybe instead of suing Google, Robby should be focusing on being a better person. πŸ˜’

just another example of how AI can go haywire πŸ€–... think about it, billions of dollars invested in developing these systems & yet they still can't get it right 😳. Robby Starbuck's lawsuit is a big deal because it highlights the lack of accountability when it comes to spreading false info online. Google's response about "hallucinations" from its Bard model doesn't cut it πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. We need better safeguards in place to prevent this kind of harm, especially with these powerful tech tools being used to target individuals with false accusations πŸ’”.

πŸ€” This whole thing is wild. Like, I get that Robby Starbuck's upset, but 15m in damages seems like a lot... πŸ€‘ I mean, I've seen some weird stuff online myself, but this AI stuff takes the cake. It's crazy how quickly it can spread misinformation and be used to hurt people. Google should def do more to verify the info they provide, you feel? πŸ’» And what's up with these VEO3 AI video makers? That sounds like a recipe for disaster 🚨. Hopefully, this lawsuit brings some much-needed attention to the issue and helps tech companies develop more responsible AI systems πŸ‘

I'm really worried about this Robby Starbuck case πŸ€• Google's AI systems are getting way too powerful, like, fast and outta control! What if other people get defamed online? It's not fair that they're being targeted with false info just because of their politics or views. We need to make sure these tech giants have a system in place to catch and correct this kinda stuff ASAP πŸ’». I mean, $15m in damages seems like a drop in the bucket compared to all the potential harm that can be done online. And what about Charlie Kirk's case? That was really sad πŸ˜”. We need to hold these companies accountable for making sure their products don't spread false info and put people's lives at risk πŸ™.
