Conservative activist sues Google over AI-generated statements

Conservative activist sues Google over AI-generated statements, alleging "outrageously false" content.

A Delaware state court has seen the filing of a lawsuit against Google by Robby Starbuck, a prominent conservative activist. According to Starbuck's complaint, the tech giant's artificial intelligence systems generated false and defamatory information about him in response to user queries. The statements, which were allegedly delivered to millions of users, described Starbuck as a "child rapist", "serial sexual abuser" and "shooter".

Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda has denied that the claims were substantiated by fact, stating instead that they were part of "hallucinations" from Google's Bard large language model. The company worked to address these issues in 2023, but it seems that Starbuck is alleging that their efforts were insufficient.

This lawsuit comes as concerns about AI-generated content and misinformation continue to grow. Last year, Al Jazeera reported on how Google's VEO3 AI video maker had been used to create deceptive videos of news events. Starbuck has also previously sued Meta Platforms over claims of harassment and abuse, although the two parties have since settled.

Starbuck is seeking at least $15 million in damages from his lawsuit against Google.

omg what a wild ride this is 🀯! i gotta say, i'm low-key concerned about these AI-generated statements being spreaded like wildfire on google πŸ’»πŸ‘€ it's not cool that someone can just get defamed and make millions off of it πŸ’Έ but at the same time, how much accountability should google have? shouldn't they be more careful with their algorithms πŸ€”? starbuck seems like a legit dude, but still... this whole situation is giving me anxiety 😩

I'm like totally concerned about this whole thing πŸ€”. I mean, AI-generated content is getting more advanced by the minute, but we gotta make sure it's not spreading false info all over the place. It's one thing to have a mistake happen once in a while, but when it happens on a massive scale like that? That's just crazy talk πŸ’₯. Google's trying to address these issues, but it sounds like they still got some work to do.

And let me tell you, I've seen some wild stuff online myself. You gotta wonder if we're gonna be able to keep track of what's real and what's not anymore πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. This is why we need more transparency from these big tech companies, you know? They gotta be held accountable for the crap they churn out.

I'm all for innovation, but not when it comes at the cost of our trust in information πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. It's like, if Google can't get its act together, who will?

OMG, this is crazy!!! 🀯 I mean, who knew AI could be so messed up? 😱 I'm literally shaking my head thinking about Robby Starbuck's situation... how can a machine just spew out such hurtful & wrong things?! πŸ€• Google needs to step up their game and make sure this doesn't happen again! πŸ’― It's like, we get it, AI is still learning, but shouldn't they be able to teach themselves not to spread false info about real people? πŸ€” I'm all for innovation, but not at the expense of our humanity πŸ’–

I don't trust these AI systems much... I mean, if they can spit out that kind of crazy stuff about someone's personal life, what's to stop them from going after regular people next? πŸ€” It's just too easy for them to go off the rails and make things up. And $15 million in damages seems like a pretty low bar to me... I'd want to know how they even proved all that "hallucination" business. Google should be doing more to vet their AI systems, not just claiming they're "just having bad days". πŸ™„

omg this is insane 🀯 google can't just let anyone spread false info about someone and then try to cover it up like they did - there's gotta be accountability πŸ’ͺ the AI thingy might seem cool but it's also super sketchy and if it's generating lies that are being read by millions of people that's a huge deal 🚨 what's next gonna be AI-generated fake news stories about politicians? 😬

I'm thinking what's going on with AI, right? It's like super powerful but also can be crazy unreliable. I mean, if a conservative activist gets called out as a child rapist by some AI system, that's just not cool 🀯. And Google is saying it was just a mistake, but still, $15 million in damages could add up. Has anyone else seen how AI-generated stuff can go off the rails? Like what about all these fake news videos on YouTube? It's hard to know what's real and what's not anymore πŸ˜•. Do you guys think Google should've done more to stop this kind of thing from happening in the first place? πŸ€”

🀯 this guy's getting roasted online for trying to take on Google, meanwhile he's the one who's been making a name for himself with these outlandish conspiracy theories 🚫. I mean, come on Robby Starbuck, you're basically saying that AI-generated content is reliable because... you said so? Give me a break! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ Google's Bard is still learning, it's not perfect but it's not like they're actively trying to defame him either. The fact that he's suing them for $15 million is just laughable πŸ˜‚, this guy needs to get his facts straight before taking on a giant like Google.

I'm watching this whole thing with AI-generated statements go down and I gotta say... πŸ€” it's wild to think about how much misinformation can spread online and get perpetuated by these massive systems.

Imagine a giant spider web πŸ•·οΈ where AI "facts" get spun into crazy conspiracy theories, and people start believing them without even fact-checking. It's like we're sleepwalking into some sci-fi nightmare 😱.

And then you've got Robby Starbuck, the dude who's suing Google over this, and I'm just wondering... what's his angle here? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ Is he trying to get attention or something?

I mean, I get it, accuracy matters, especially when it comes to defamatory statements. But come on, Google is working hard to clean up these issues (as Jose Castaneda says) and Starbuck's still going after them for more $$$ πŸ’Έ.

We need better fact-checking, AI literacy, and online accountability πŸ“ŠπŸ’» so we can all avoid getting caught up in this web of misinformation. We should be promoting critical thinking over social media echo chambers πŸ“’

Anyway... I'm curious to see how this whole thing plays out πŸ€”

πŸ€” This whole situation with Robby Starbuck suing Google over AI-generated statements is kinda wild πŸ“šπŸ’». I mean, we've all heard of AI getting things wrong online, but this sounds like it went way too far 😳. I'm not saying the AI was definitely trying to trash Starbuck's rep or anything, but those kinds of accusations can ruin lives πŸ’”.

If Google did indeed create content that was "outrageously false", they need to get their act together ASAP 🚨. They're one of the most influential tech companies out there, and their AI tools have a huge impact on how we consume info online πŸ“Ί. I'm all for holding them accountable, but also hoping they can figure out ways to improve their quality control so this kind of thing doesn't happen again 🀞.

this is getting crazy - like AI generated content can be used to spread lies about ppl and now someone's suing google over it... 15 million dollars in damages seems like a lot, but i guess its better than nothing πŸ€”πŸ’Έ

come on google can't even get AI right lol πŸ’₯ this is getting outta hand with all these lawsuits...first its starbuck now who's next gonna sue them over some "hallucinations" 🀯 i mean what's the diff between a model saying something outrageous and someone actually doing it? are we just expecting perfection from google now? πŸ€”

Man, I'm so done with this AI thing... I mean, I know it's supposed to be all helpful and whatnot, but come on! 🀯 My grandma would've never believed that a machine could just spit out crap like that about someone. Robby Starbuck is right to be upset, though - who wants their name dragged through the mud like that? 😱

I remember when we were still using actual search engines and getting real results... now it's all about these AI-powered whateverits called. It's like they're playing with fire here, making stuff up and hoping nobody calls 'em out on it. Google's got to step up their game if they wanna keep people's trust. Otherwise, we'll just be stuck with a bunch of fake news and who knows what else... πŸ€–πŸ’Έ

🀯 I'm genuinely surprised that someone would think it's okay to fabricate such extreme and false statements about a person online. It's like, we're living in the 2020s, where AI can generate content that's almost indistinguishable from reality? πŸ€– How are these algorithms not being held accountable for spreading misinformation? Google should be doing more to prevent this kind of stuff from happening. $15 million seems a bit steep for just one guy, but I guess if it's going to stop others from getting hurt like Robby Starbuck did... πŸ’Έ

I feel like this is just another example of how AI can get out of control 😳. I mean, think about it, if a large language model like Bard can spew out completely false information about someone, what's to stop it from doing the same for politicians or celebrities? πŸ€” It's not like Google is taking responsibility for its mistakes and actually fixing them. They're just saying they're working on it, but that doesn't seem like enough to prevent this kind of thing from happening again. And now Starbuck has to shell out millions of dollars in damages because of it... πŸ€‘ I'm all for holding tech companies accountable, but I think we need a more comprehensive solution to address the problem of AI-generated misinformation. πŸ’»

πŸ€” This guy Robby Starbuck is just trying to stir up drama for attention... like it's that hard to fact-check something before you're going to sue someone over it? πŸ™„ I mean, I get it, misinformation can be a real issue with AI and all, but does he have to take it this far? And $15 million in damages seems like a pretty steep price to pay for a bunch of people's bad words online. Also, what's up with Google not having better checks in place to prevent this kind of thing from happening again? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ They've had time to figure out how to handle AI-generated content, so I don't get why they're not being more proactive about it... or maybe Starbuck just wants the cash and doesn't care πŸ˜’

AI-generated content is like a wild card, you never know what's gonna come outta it 🀯. I'm not surprised Robby Starbuck is suing Google over this, but $15 million seems kinda steep, even if the stuff said about him was totally false πŸ˜’. It just goes to show how vulnerable we are to misinformation these days. Google needs to step up their game on fact-checking and ensuring that AI-generated content isn't spreading around like wildfire 🚨.
