Diners rank the 10 ‘dirtiest’ states for restaurants — see if yours made the list

A recent survey has revealed the top 10 states where diners are most likely to report dirty dining conditions, pest infestations, and poor food quality. The ranking was compiled from over 2.8 million TripAdvisor reviews of restaurants in major US cities.

At the top of the list is New Jersey, with a staggering 320,520 mentions of "dirty restaurant" complaints, followed closely by Florida, which received over 4,560 mentions of cleanliness issues, including cockroaches and hair in food.

California ranks third due to its high volume of pest-related complaints, with 960 reports of rats and roaches. The state's ranking was influenced by the popularity of its major cities and tourist areas.

Arizona comes in fourth, with consistent complaints across all tracked categories, particularly in its metro areas. Texas ranks fifth, reflecting lower but still significant complaint volumes spread across its large urban markets.

Other states that made the top 10 list include Louisiana, Alabama, Maryland, Nevada, and Georgia. The rankings are based on crowdsourced online reviews, not official restaurant inspection data, which is tracked by local and state health departments.

The results highlight concerns about food safety and restaurant cleanliness in many parts of the US. While some states have higher complaint volumes than others, it's essential for diners to remain vigilant when choosing where to eat.

The top 10 list is a sobering reminder that even in states with high standards for food quality and sanitation, dirty dining conditions can still be a problem. As consumers become more aware of the importance of restaurant cleanliness, they may start to hold restaurants to higher standards, pushing them to prioritize their customers' safety and satisfaction.

omg i'm not surprised california made it to the top 3 🤯 with all those tourists and foodie spots... it's like a neverending buffet for pests 🐜🍴 but seriously though how can u have a rat infestation in cali of all places? that just sounds crazy 🤪 anyway yeah i agree diners gotta stay woke about what they're eating especially when it comes to health concerns and stuff. maybe this list'll motivate some restaurants to step up their game and prioritize cleanliness 👍

omg like totally surprising me that new jersey came out on top 🤯 i mean i've been to nj a few times and yeah its definitely not the cleanest state but idk if 320k complaints is rly necessary 🤷‍♀️ maybe they should get some extra funding for their restaurants or somethin 💸

not surprising to see new jersey on top 🤔, i mean who doesn't love a good boardwalk burger but seriously though some places need major overhaul 👀, i've been to florida and california and yeah, it's a mixed bag food-wise. as for arizona and texas, gotta respect the fact that people are speaking up about their dining experiences 💬, still kinda weird how many cockroaches in florida tho 🐜, guess you get what you pay for... or not 🤷‍♂️

😒 ugh, gotta say, these results are kinda concerning... especially with NJ at the top of the list. I mean, who expects to find cockroaches in a plate of pizza? 🐜 it's just gross. but i guess it's good that people are speaking up about these issues. we need more transparency and accountability from restaurants. maybe this will push them to take cleanliness more seriously... especially with all the food bloggers and influencers out there, they should be setting an example! 👀

yep, it's crazy how some states are really struggling with dirty diners 🤢... i mean, you'd think that just because a state has a good rep for food quality, that wouldn't be the case anywhere in the country... but nope! looks like even in states like cali and az, people are still complaining about cockroaches and whatnot 🐜. maybe it's time for some restaurants to get their act together and start taking more care with cleanliness? 🚿 personally i think this is a great wake up call for consumers... we need to be more vocal about our experiences and hold restaurants accountable if they're not meeting our standards for food safety...

ugh, i'm not surprised new jersey made that list 🤦‍♂️, i mean who hasn't had a bad experience at a paterson diner? but seriously, it's crazy how many complaints they got 😷 320k mentions of "dirty restaurant" is just insane. and florida? come on, cockroaches in food? that's just disgusting 🐜. and california's rats and roaches problem? yeah no kidding, i've seen pics of those things online, gross. it's like people are just not paying attention to what they're eating anymore 🤷‍♂️ or they're just expecting subpar service from the start. anyway, glad someone's finally keeping track of this stuff, maybe restaurants will actually do something about it instead of just ignoring it 👀

man... these results are wild 🤯 i mean, you'd think that california, being one of the most popular states, would have better food quality and less pest issues but apparently not 🐜 rats and roaches in cali? that's just crazy! and texas is 5th? that's kinda surprising considering how big it is and all... maybe it's because some areas are still growing and stuff? idk. point is, we need to keep holding restaurants accountable for their cleanliness, especially when it comes to food safety 🚽 gotta stay vigilant as diners and support places that prioritize customer safety over profits 💸

🤔 just saw this survey about dirty diners in US states... think its kinda crazy that NJ comes out on top 🙅‍♂️ 320k mentions of "dirty restaurant" complaints is a lot! 🚽 i mean, you gotta wonder why so many ppl complaining about cockroaches & hair in food 🐜🍴 california makes sense tho since its super touristy 🏖️ and arizona seems like a state where ppl are always on the go 🚗 so maybe not surprising they got more complaints 🤦‍♀️ anyway, i think its cool that consumers are starting to hold restaurants accountable for food safety & cleanliness 👍 might lead to some changes in the way restaurants operate 💪

Y'all gotta keep it clean at those diners! 🚽 I mean, I know we all love our burgers and fries, but some places are straight up gross 😷. California's got its issues with pests, and Arizona's got cockroaches comin' outta the woodwork... it's just not right, you feel me? 🤢

I'm not sayin' that every restaurant in those states is dirty, 'cause there are some great ones too! But this survey is like a wake-up call for all of us to be more mindful of where we're eatin'. I mean, if 2.8 million people are complainin' about the same things, it's gotta be somethin' we should be concerned about 🤔.

So yeah, let's all just take a moment to appreciate our diners and make sure they're keepin' it clean... for us! 💪

Ugh, I'm so over this list 🤢! Like, who doesn't know that New Jersey is gonna be on top or something? 😂 Can we just talk about the formatting here though? The way they presented the stats would've been so much cleaner if it was in a table with some decent margins. I mean, can you imagine how hard it'd be to read those tiny numbers without some spacing? 🤯

And honestly, who are these reviewers? Were they all just scrolling through TripAdvisor while sipping margaritas on the beach? 🍹 Like, did they even taste the food before leaving their reviews? I swear, some of these complaints sound like the restaurant was just having a bad day... 🤷‍♀️

But you know what really gets me? The part about how this might encourage restaurants to clean up their acts. That's so extra, but also kind of necessary. Can we please just have some standard formatting guidelines for food safety reviews though? 📝 Like, is that too much to ask?! 🤣

🤔 gotta say, gotta be honest, some states are seriously lacking in terms of restaurant cleanliness... New Jersey at the top? that's crazy! 320k dirty complaints is a lot... i mean, i've been to some sketchy places in NJ but i didn't think it was THAT bad 🚮. and florida? cockroaches in food? grossed out just thinking about it 🤢. california's rat problem is pretty wild too, i guess all those tourists attract some unwanted critters 🐜. anyway, gotta give credit to the survey for bringing this to light... maybe now people will start expecting more from their dining experiences 👍.

I don’t usually comment but I'm kinda surprised by NJ taking the top spot 🤔🍴. Like, you'd think it's a nice state on the East Coast but apparently people have some major issues with cleanliness in restaurants there? 🚽🐜 Not sure if it's just tourist areas or what but it seems like a bit of a shock to me 😳. And what really bugged me is how many places are reporting cockroaches and hair in their food... that's just gross 🤢👎

🤦‍♂️ like what's new in NJ? didn't know our lovely Garden State was also a hotbed for cockroaches 🐜. gotta wonder if all the folks who work at those boardwalks are also secretly chefs or something 🎠. anyway, it's always good to see people speaking up about stuff, just hope some restaurants take this feedback and actually do something about it 🙏

ugh, sounds like us diners are stuck with some pretty questionable places to chow down 🤢. i mean, new jersey at the top? that's just gross. florida, california... all these states have legit issues with cleanliness and pests? what's wrong with 'em? should be a wake-up call for restaurants to get their acts together, but honestly, it's probably just gonna lead to a bunch of complaints from people who aren't even gonna leave reviews 🙄. i mean, what's the point of all these survey results if we're not gonna do anything about it? just more proof that some places are totally slacking on food safety and cleanliness standards 😒

omg u guyz i just read this super weird article about diners in us states 🤯 and california is like 3rd on the list? why tho?? i mean i've been to cali and food is def good but i guess there are some bad spots too 🤷‍♀️ i dont get how u can find rats and roaches in restaurants tho r they just like hiding under tables or something 🐜🍴 anyway its kinda surprising that ppl in us states are complaining so much about dirty diners 🤔
