Fackham Hall review – Downton Abbey spoof is fast, funny and throwaway

In a bid to cash in on the lighthearted resurgence of spoofs, Fackham Hall hits theaters with a hilarious take on Downton Abbey's stuffy British aristocracy. The film, directed by Jim O'Hanlon and co-written by Jimmy Carr, wastes no time in poking fun at the very pretensions it's spoofing.

From its ludicrous opening scene – servants indulging in illicit activities to impress their betters – to its absurd finale, Fackham Hall packs a punch with jokes that range from juvenile to genuinely laugh-out-loud funny. The film cleverly skewers the suffocating expectations placed on early 20th-century women, often used as fodder for self-serious drama.

The plot is secondary to the bits, and Carr keeps delivering them at a quick-fire pace, with three guffaws in the mix. A murder, an incompetent investigation, and a forbidden romance between the lovable pickpocket Eric Noone and Rose all serve to further lampoon the genre. With plenty of pratfalls, spoof staples like wordplay, and a cast that's just right (Ben Radcliffe and Thomasin McKenzie bring the perfect balance of bumbling and beguiling chemistry), Fackham Hall proves to be an enjoyable sendup.

While the film's lighthearted fun has its limitations – it can wear off quickly, and the mileage on this particular brand of spoof runs out somewhere between sketch and feature – one can't help but admire a commitment to the art form. After all, if we're going to indulge in knowing irreverence, might as well laugh at it.

For fans of goofy humor, Fackham Hall is a must-see. With its quick wit, physical comedy, and star-studded cast, this film is sure to leave you grinning from ear to ear. So, if you're ready to indulge in some silly fun, get ready to join the fun at Fackham Hall – now playing in US cinemas, with a UK release on December 12th, and an Australian outing scheduled for February 19th.

I just saw this and I'm still grinning 😂🎉. I love how they poked fun at Downton Abbey's seriousness, it was like they were saying 'enough already' to all that self-serious drama! And Jimmy Carr is a genius with jokes, I laughed out loud at the bits about Eric Noone and Rose 🤣. The cast is perfect too, Ben Radcliffe and Thomasin McKenzie have great chemistry together. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's just so much fun to watch and that's what matters, right? 😄

I'm so down for this one! 🤣 The fact that they're not afraid to poke fun at themselves is what makes it so refreshing. And I love how they tackle the whole Downton Abbey vibe with such humor and wit. It's like, okay, you're a stuffy aristocracy, but we can still have a good laugh at your expense 😂. The cast seems perfect for this kind of thing too, I mean, who wouldn't want to see Ben Radcliffe and Thomasin McKenzie getting into all sorts of wacky misadventures? 🤪 And let's be real, if you're gonna indulge in some goofy humor, you might as well go big or go home, right? 😜

🤣 I just watched this movie and it's literally the most hilarious thing I've seen all year! The jokes are on point and the cast is perfection 😂. I love how they're not afraid to poke fun at themselves and the whole Downton Abbey vibe. It's like a big ol' slap in the face to all the stuffy drama that takes itself too seriously 🤪. And can we talk about Eric Noone's character? 🙌 Ben Radcliffe is literally stealing every scene he's in. I'm already counting down the days till it hits Netflix 📺. Has anyone else seen this movie yet? What did you think? 🤔

🤣 this movie is like a breath of fresh air, so many laughs and I love how it pokes fun at the whole Downton Abbey vibe 🙃 and let's be real, Ben Radcliffe and Thomasin McKenzie's chemistry is EVERYTHING 💘 also can't get enough of Jimmy Carr's rapid-fire jokes 😂 but yeah, it's not perfect, some jokes might fall flat but overall it's a hilarious sendup that knows when to dial it back 👏

idk how much i fully buy into this one tho 🤔 the jokes are def funny but its still a spoof so its kinda hard to take it too seriously...i mean ben radcliffe is cute tho 😂 and the cast does have great chemistry but sometimes these types of movies can feel like they're just coasting on their own absurdity rather than actually crafting something unique or interesting

I gotta say, I'm not really sure why we need another spoof of Downton Abbey lol 😂. But seriously, I think the film's ridiculousness is part of its charm - it knows exactly what it is and runs with it 🤣. The jokes are pretty on-point, especially when they skewer the societal norms of old England 🙄. What really got me was how confident the whole thing feels - like it's not trying to be too clever or anything. It just pokes fun and moves on 💨. For fans of silly humor, I guess Fackham Hall is a solid choice 🎥. Not gonna win any awards for subtlety or depth, but hey, who needs that when you can have laughter? 😄

I JUST LOVED THIS FILM!!! IT'S LIKE A BIG OL' SLAP IN THE FACE TO ALL THAT STUFFY BRITISH DRAMA!!! THEY'RE NOT AFRAID TO MAKE FUN OF THEMSELVES AND THE GENRE AS A WHOLE, WHICH IS REALLY RELAXING TO WATCH. I MEAN, WHO DOESN'T LOVE A GOOD PRATFALL OR TWO?! AND THE CAST IS PERFECT - I'M DYING OVER ERIC NOONE'S CHARACTER ALREADY! 🤣👏 THE ONLY THING THAT BOTHERED ME WAS HOW QUICKLY IT WORE OFF, BUT GUESS THAT'S JUST PART OF THE FUN, RIGHT? 😊

lol just saw this movie and its so funny 🤣, i mean the jokes are all over the place but that's what makes it work! ben radcliffe is literally hilarious as eric noone 👍🏻 i love how they skewer the whole downton abbey vibe too. 3 guffaws in one scene lol what a waste of time 🕰️ anyway, if you're looking for something lighthearted and goofy, fackham hall is def worth checking out 🎥 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1544458/

The jokes had me DYING laughing, especially the bits about those stuffy British aristocrats 😂🤣. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good murder mystery with a pickpocket 😂? Ben Radcliffe and Thomasin McKenzie are total dream castings for this movie 🤩! I mean, it's not going to win any Oscars or anything 🙄, but if you're in the mood for some silly fun, Fackham Hall is a total must-see 🎬. And can we talk about Jimmy Carr's writing skills? Genius 👏!

OMG 🤣 I'm literally still watching Downton Abbey and I'm obsessed but like this new film Fackham Hall is giving me LIFE! I love how they're poking fun at the super proper British aristocracy – it's like they're saying "yeah, we know you guys are stuffy, let's have some fun with that". The jokes had me LOLing out loud 🤣 and Ben Radcliffe and Thomasin McKenzie are literally meant to be 😍. I'm a sucker for good spoof humor and this film delivers 💥. Can't wait to see it in the theater – might even watch it again on Netflix afterwards 😉

omg u guys i just watched this movie fackham hall w/ my friends and it's literally the most hilarious thing i've seen all year the jokes r so good even our maths teacher lolled during the part where they're solving a math problem 🤣📝 i think what makes it work is that it pokes fun at the drama genre in general, like how over-the-top everything gets in period dramas anyway we also need to talk about the cast tho ben radcliffe and thomasin mckenzie are literally perfect as the leads they bring such great chemistry to the screen 👫💕

I'm so down for this spoof film 🤣! The idea of poking fun at Downton Abbey's pretentiousness is just too rich for me. I love how they're not afraid to go all out with the jokes – it's like a breath of fresh air after all that self-serious drama. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good murder mystery and forbidden romance? 🤣👀 The cast looks hilarious together, too – Ben Radcliffe and Thomasin McKenzie are already my new fave comedic duo 💖. I'll def check it out as soon as it hits theaters, can't wait to LOL 😂!

I'm still laughing about this new film "Fackham Hall" it's so ridiculous 😂 I love how they're not taking themselves too seriously and are just going for the laughs. The cast is perfect, especially Eric Noone - I ship him and Rose so hard 💕 The jokes are quick-witted and physical comedy is always a winner 🤣 It's not trying to be too deep or serious, which makes it super enjoyable. My only concern is that it might wear off after a while, but for now, it's definitely a must-see for fans of goofy humor 🎥

I gotta say, I'm loving this new spoof film Fackham Hall! It's like they're speaking my language 🤣. I mean, who doesn't love a good laugh at the absurdity of stuffy British aristocracy? The jokes are fire 🔥 and the cast is on point 👏. What really gets me is how they're poking fun at the expectations placed on women back in the day - it's like they're saying "okay, we know you're serious, but let's be real, sometimes you just gotta have a laugh 😂".

I do think it might wear off a bit after a while (no spoilers here 🙅‍♂️), but overall I'm here for it! The art of spoofing is all about having fun with the medium and Fackham Hall delivers on that front 💥. If you're looking for a light-hearted, feel-good movie, this is def worth checking out 😊.

ugh i went to see this movie last night and i'm still laughing it's so ridiculously funny 😂🤣 i mean i was expecting it to be just another spoof but nope it really delivered the laughs from start to finish 🎥👏 the cast is perfect too ben radcliffe and thomasin mckenzie have such great chemistry together 👫🤗 i loved how they poked fun at the stuffy british aristocracy it was so refreshing to see a film that didn't take itself seriously 💁‍♀️🤣

i'm so over this whole "spoof" thing... it's just lazy filmmaking 🙄. think about it, people are making a living off mocking others, but what about the real-life issues they're making fun of? doesn't that feel like some kinda disrespect? and don't even get me started on the wordplay – soooo overdone 🤯. give me something with actual substance any day 😒

idk why ppl still r watchin these old school dramas theyre like so boring 😴 dont even get me started on the stuffy british aristocracy its all about the laughs imo this new spoof film fackham hall is straight fire 🤣 ben radcliffe & thomasin mckenzie are literally perfect as the clumsy but lovable leads and jimmy carr's writing had me DYING 😂 cant wait to see it on the big screen 💥
