Hamas hands over another body of an Israeli hostage, with Red Cross on its way to receive the coffin.
In a move that has been welcomed by some, but criticized by others, Hamas announced late Friday that it would hand over the remains of yet another deceased Israeli hostage. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), a team from the Red Cross is currently making its way to the southern Gaza Strip to collect the body, marking the latest development in the ongoing effort to locate and recover the remains of the hostages.
The announcement comes after Hamas said earlier this week that it had handed over all the Israeli hostage remains in Gaza that it was able to recover. The group's armed wing, al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed on Friday that another body would be transferred into Red Cross custody.
However, despite progress made by Hamas, the majority of the hostages' remains remain unaccounted for. According to the IDF, if the remains handed over on Friday are confirmed to be an Israeli hostage, that means at least 18 bodies are still missing. The group had previously stated that extensive efforts and special equipment would be required to locate the remaining bodies.
The situation has been complicated by reports of Hamas misidentifying one of its previous transfers as a hostage, leading some to question the group's sincerity in repatriating the remains. Despite this, many countries have welcomed the progress made so far, including the United States.
In a surprising move, senior U.S. advisers revealed that their country is sharing intelligence with Hamas to help locate the missing hostages. Turkey has also offered to assist in the search for and retrieval of remains by sending expert teams with experience rescuing people from earthquakes.
The U.S. Ambassador to the UN has pledged American personnel will be part of the effort to recover the remaining hostages, while senior U.S. advisers urged patience, citing the difficulties in retrieving the remains still in Gaza.
However, not everyone is happy with the developments so far. The Israeli Hostages and Missing Families Forum has called for the entire peace deal to be shelved until all the hostages' remains are returned by Hamas.
