Israel has received the body of Major Tal Haimi, a 41-year-old Israeli soldier who was held hostage by Hamas under a US-brokered ceasefire deal. The return of Haimi's body is part of the first phase of the agreement, which also saw the release of 13 out of 28 deceased hostages by Hamas.
The deal has seen a significant decrease in violence between Israel and Hamas, with both sides accusing each other of breaching the agreement. Despite this, deadly clashes broke out on Sunday when Israeli forces struck dozens of Hamas targets across the Gaza Strip, killing at least 45 Palestinians.
Israel says it is resuming enforcement of the ceasefire and will respond firmly to any violation of it. However, Hamas remains committed to the agreement, according to its leader Ismail Haniyeh.
The return of Haimi's body marks a significant milestone in the deal, which has also seen the release of 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,718 detainees from Gaza, as well as an increase in aid into the territory. The first phase of the agreement is set to last for several weeks before being reviewed and potentially extended.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) currently holds about half of Gaza, demarcated by a so-called Yellow Line. However, Palestinians have expressed confusion about the exact location of the line, leading to clashes with Israeli forces.
The deal has been brokered by US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who traveled to Israel on Sunday to assess the situation. The truce remains in place, according to Trump, but its future is uncertain as tensions continue to simmer between Israel and Hamas.
