I mean, I'm kinda thinking that this mental health group for black men is super necessary , but at the same time, I think it's also kinda... problematic? Like, aren't we just perpetuating another expectation that black men need to "fix" themselves? shouldn't they be able to express their emotions without having to seek out some kind of group or support system? but on the other hand, isn't that just what society is gonna do to them again if they don't take care of themselves first?
can you believe how many black men are still being held back by societal expectations? like, it's not just about seeking help, it's about creating a culture where it's okay to be vulnerable and express your emotions. we need more spaces like this in every neighborhood, not just leimert park
this is so beautiful to see black men embracing their emotions & seeking help - it's about time we shift away from toxic masculinity and create spaces for vulnerability & empathy the idea that they've been socialized to toughen up & ignore their feelings is a major part of what's keeping them silent, and i think desmond carter's group is a game-changer in breaking down those barriers by creating a safe space for expression & connection, we can help these men develop healthier ways to cope with stress & find joy again
I'm so inspired by Desmond Carter's work . It's like we need this kind of safe space for all marginalized groups to just be themselves without fear of judgment. Mental health is still stigmatized in our society, especially among communities of color, and I think initiatives like this group are super crucial in breaking that stigma down . I also love how Carter's trying to challenge these generational cycles of toxic masculinity and expectation vs emotional expression . We need more people like him leading the charge for positive change!
its so cool to see Desmond Carter creating this safe space for black men to open up about their feelings , im not surprised tho, weve been talkin bout mental health issues in our community for ages , its time we start takin action and breakin down those generational cycles , these guys are lucky to have Carter as a leader, he gets it , and its amazing to see the camaraderie and trust among the members , we need more of this in our communities, less about expectations and more about support
I'm loving this initiative but gotta say, it's crazy to think that people were just expected to be strong enough to deal with all that mental stuff on their own . Like, what even is that? We need more spaces like this where guys can feel comfortable opening up without fear of being judged or seen as weak . And it's not just about the guys either, we need more opportunities for emotional expression and validation in our communities period . Carter's got a lot of good vibes going on with his group but I wish he'd talk more about how we can scale this model to reach more folks and make it more accessible . And honestly, I'm still waiting for us to see some actual policy changes that address the systemic issues, not just more feel-good groups .
