Olympic medalist spurns Canada in hopes of swimming for Team USA: 'Always felt like an American'

Canadian swimmer Ilya Kharun has shocked the sports world by announcing his decision to defect from Team Canada and join Team USA. A two-time Canadian medalist, Kharun's switch comes as no surprise, given his long-held desire to represent the United States.

Born in Montreal, Kharun grew up in Las Vegas, where he was raised by Ukrainian parents who continued their careers with Cirque du Soleil after retiring from acrobatics. This unique upbringing instilled a sense of belonging and identity that would eventually lead him to abandon his Canadian roots.

"I've always felt like an American," Kharun said in a heartfelt Instagram post, thanking Swimming Canada for their support. "I grew up in America, I've lived my whole life in the USA, and I've never represented a club team outside of USA Swimming."

Kharun's decision has left his former coaches and teammates stunned, with Swimming Canada's high-performance director John Atkinson expressing disappointment but wishing Kharun well on his next endeavor.

The 20-year-old butterfly swimmer took home two bronze medals in Paris after winning a gold in the 2024 world championships in Budapest. He also won a bronze medal last year in Singapore.

While it may take some time for Kharun to officially join Team USA, given the need to be released from Swimming Canada, his swift move has sparked widespread attention. The 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles are now within reach, and fans can't wait to see what this talented swimmer will achieve under the American flag.

With a long career ahead of him, Kharun's decision is a testament to his dedication and perseverance as an athlete. It remains to be seen how this development will play out, but one thing is certain: Ilya Kharun has put himself firmly on the map as a force to be reckoned with in international swimming.

He's defected from Canada to USA ๐Ÿคฏ... I mean, who can blame him? He was born in Montreal but grew up in Vegas and always felt like an American ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ. It's like he finally found a sense of home ๐Ÿ˜Š. His coaches and teammates are shocked, but I guess that's understandable ๐Ÿค”. The guy's got talent pouring out of every pore ๐Ÿ’ฆ. Now we just gotta wait for him to officially join Team USA and see what kind of splash he makes at the 2028 Olympics ๐ŸŒŠ. This kid's future is looking super bright โญ๏ธ!

๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ This defection news got me thinking, like Kharun's family background and upbringing played a huge role in his decision. It makes sense that he'd feel more connected to USA Swimming considering his entire life was spent there. ๐Ÿค” Not sure if it's a surprise for those who know him from the swim world, but I guess it's still a shock for Team Canada fans ๐Ÿ˜Š. One thing's for sure though - Kharun is gonna make waves in the swimming scene now! โšก๏ธ

Lmao what's wrong with these Canadian athletes ๐Ÿคฃ he's been saying he wants to rep the USA for ages and now it's finally happening? Like, didn't they know? ๐Ÿ˜‚ his parents are all about Cirque du Soleil btw I need to get tickets for that ๐ŸŽช

Can't believe Kharun's gonna rep the States now ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ, always thought he'd stick with Canada, that's like his birth country and all ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ... what's next, Canadians gonna start cheering for the Yanks too? ๐Ÿ˜’ I mean, I get why he wants to be where he feels most at home, but this is a shocker, don't expect to see him on the Canadian podium again ๐Ÿคฎ.

๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’ฆ So, Ilya Kharun's defection to Team USA wasn't that surprising, tbh? Like, he's been saying he wanted to rep the States for ages ๐Ÿ˜‚. It's all about identity and feeling like you belong, right? ๐ŸŒŽ As a fan of Riverdale, I feel him - sometimes you gotta follow your heart and take risks, even if it means leaving behind what's familiar ๐Ÿ’•. Now, let's see how this plays out in LA ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ, 'cause I'm hyped for the 2028 Olympics! Kharun's got some big shoes to fill, but I'm rooting for him - he's got that butterfly charm ๐Ÿ˜. Can't wait to see what he brings to the table as an American swimmer ๐Ÿ’ช!

I'm not surprised, tbh... ๐Ÿค” I mean, I've seen it happen before with athletes switching countries. It's all about what's best for them, you know? ๐Ÿ’ก Kharun seems like he's made his mind up and is ready to take the plunge (pun intended). But what really caught my eye was how shocked the Canadian team was ๐Ÿ˜‚. You'd think they'd be more prepared when it comes to athletes changing their allegiances. On a positive note, though, this could be a great opportunity for Team USA to bring in some fresh talent ๐ŸŒŸ!

this is gonna be epic! ๐Ÿคฉ i mean, i knew he was an American at heart already ๐Ÿ˜‚, his instagram post said it all. and can you blame him? usa swimming is like the better program, imo. swimming canada's high-performance director is totes salty tho ๐Ÿ‘Š. anyway, 2028 los angeles here we come! ๐ŸŒด๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ i'm hyped for ilya's future on the us team, he's got the potential to dominate ๐Ÿคฏ.

omg I'm low-key excited about Ilya Kharun's defection ๐Ÿคฏ! i mean, it's not every day you see someone go from being a Canadian swimmer to an American one, especially with all the drama surrounding it ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. but honestly, it feels like he was meant to be an american athlete - his upbringing and whole life in the usa are already more connected to the country than canada ๐ŸŒ…. can't wait to see what's next for him! maybe we'll even get to see him win that olympic gold medal ๐Ÿ˜Š

so i think its cool that ilya khurin is followin his heart ๐Ÿค— he's been sayin he wants to rep team usa for ages and now hes makin it happen, gotta respect dat ๐Ÿ’ช especially since he grew up in the us already, so its not like hes tradin one identity 4 another or anythin ๐Ÿ˜Ž i mean, we can be mad at swimmin canada 4 not givin him a better shot, but who knows whats goin on behind the scenes ๐Ÿค anyways, khurin's got this talent and determination, i got no doubt he'll crush it in los angeles ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Umm... I don't know if I agree or disagree that Kharun's decision to defect from Canada to USA is surprising... I mean, he did say he's always felt like an American ๐Ÿค”... but at the same time, it feels kinda weird for him to just leave his Canadian roots like that ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. He was born in Montreal and grew up in Vegas, so isn't that a pretty Canadian upbringing? ๐Ÿ˜• And what about all those medals he won as a Canadian athlete? Shouldn't that count for something? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ I guess what I'm saying is... I don't know if it's really surprising or not ๐Ÿค”. Can someone explain it to me again? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

omg can't believe ilya kharun just switched to team usa lol he's like the ultimate switcheroo what a move for him, all that dedication and hard work paying off finally!

i feel bad for his former coaches and teammates though, they must be super disappointed but hey, Kharun is following his heart now who can blame him?

anyway, this is gonna be lit at the 2028 LA olympics!! can't wait to see what he's got up his sleeve!
