Opinion | Georgia secretary of state to fellow Republicans seeking voter data: “Hell no”

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger delivered a stern warning to fellow Republicans who are pushing him to hand over sensitive voter data to the Trump administration. In a scathing op-ed piece published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week, Raffensperger unequivocally stated that he would never comply with the request.

The move comes as a significant blow to the Trump camp's efforts to gain access to Georgia's voter database, which they claim is necessary to prevent widespread voter fraud. However, this assertion has been repeatedly debunked by experts and fact-checkers alike. The administration's motives appear to be driven more by an attempt to influence the outcome of the 2024 elections than a genuine concern for electoral integrity.

Raffensperger's stance is not surprising, given his own history of supporting voter suppression tactics in Georgia. However, it appears that even he has reached a breaking point when confronted with Trump's authoritarian ambitions. The secretary of state's refusal to hand over the data is being hailed by Democrats as a major victory in their ongoing battle against Trump's attempts to manipulate the electoral process.

The move also echoes the sentiments expressed by Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who recently rebuked the Justice Department's efforts to obtain voter data from her own state. Her response was characterized as "Hell no," a phrase that has become a rallying cry for those fighting against Trump's election interference tactics.

As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: anyone who raises concerns about handing over sensitive data to the administration does so at their own peril. The president has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to disregard the rule of law and undermine democratic institutions in pursuit of his own interests. It remains to be seen whether Raffensperger's defiance will ultimately prove to be a winning strategy for Democrats or simply a calculated move to shore up support among Republicans.

omg i'm so proud of Brad Raffensperger for standing up to Trump 🤩 his refusal to hand over the voter data is like, totally justified considering all the election interference drama we've been dealing with in this country 👊 it's about time someone took a stand against Trump's authoritarian tendencies and I'm loving the fact that Democrats are hailing him as a hero 💪 let's keep pushing back against these attempts to manipulate the electoral process and make sure our votes actually count 🗳️

I'm seeing this all going down with Trump and it's getting more sketchy by the minute 🙅‍♂️. This voter data thing is just a way to silence opposition voters and give himself an unfair advantage in the next election. If he thinks he can just bully his way into getting what he wants, he's got another thing coming 😒. I'm glad Brad Raffensperger is standing firm, even if it means he might be losing support among some of his own party members. It's time for people to take a stand against this kind of election interference and demand that our democratic institutions are respected 🚨.

I'm so worried about the state of our democracy right now 🤕. It's disheartening to see politicians like Trump trying to manipulate the electoral process and undermine trust in our institutions. I think Raffensperger is doing the right thing by refusing to hand over sensitive voter data, even if it means going up against the president 😒. We need to prioritize protecting the integrity of our elections and ensuring that every vote counts equally. It's time for us to stand up and demand accountability from those in power 🗳️.

🙅‍♂️ seems like trump's been trying to pull some shady stuff with voter data again... can't help but think that's just another way for him to try and manipulate the system 🤔 anyone who goes against him ends up on the losing end 🚫 gotta wonder what's really going on behind closed doors...

😊 I'm so relieved to see our democracy holding strong! 🙌 Georgia's Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, standing up to the Trump administration's demands is literally giving me all the feels ❤️. I mean, can you believe they're trying to manipulate elections? It's like, come on, guys, we're a country built on fairness and integrity 🤦‍♀️!

It's amazing how Raffensperger's decision is being seen as a major victory for Democrats, but let's be real, it's also a huge win for us, the people 🙌. We need more folks like him who are willing to speak up against authoritarian tendencies and fight for our democratic rights 💪.

And can we talk about how refreshing it is to see some leaders saying "Hell no" 😂? Shenna Bellows' response was everything and more! It's time for us to stand strong and support those who do the same 👊. Let's keep spreading the word and making sure our voices are heard 🗣️!

I'm not surprised that Brad Raffensperger is pushing back against Trump's request, but I do hope he's not doing it just to save face 💁‍♂️. The fact remains that the Trump admin has been sniffing around for voter data like a dog with a bone 🐕. And let's be real, if they're really worried about voter fraud, they should be focusing on some of the more egregious cases in this country rather than trying to dig up every last piece of info 🔍.

It's also weird that Raffensperger is playing hero now 😏. I mean, we all know he's been down with Trump before 👀. Maybe this is just a case of him finally finding his inner "I'm right and you're wrong" 🤷‍♂️. Either way, it's good to see some pushback against the president's antics 🙌.

This is getting out of hand... 🤯 Trump's admin thinks they can just demand sensitive voter data from states and get away with it? Newsflash: the Constitution doesn't work that way! 😱 The fact that Raffensperger and other secretaries of state are pushing back against these demands is a huge deal. It shows that even those in power aren't going to roll over when faced with authoritarian tactics.

I mean, come on, the whole "voter fraud" thing has been thoroughly debunked. We've got experts and fact-checkers on both sides who have consistently shown that it's extremely rare and usually involves some pretty obvious mistakes. But still, Trump's team keeps trying to spin this narrative as if it's a major issue.

The real question here is what motivates the Trump admin to keep pushing for this? Is it really about preventing voter fraud, or is it just about trying to undermine the democratic process and sway the 2024 election in their favor? Either way, we need more officials like Raffensperger who are willing to stand up to these tactics. We can't let authoritarian behavior become normalized in our country! 🚫

I'm shocked that Trump is still trying to manipulate the electoral process like this 🤯. I mean, come on, if he really wanted to prevent voter fraud, wouldn't he have done something about it when he was in office? It just seems like he's making all these moves now because he thinks he can use the system for his own gain 🤑. Brad Raffensperger is doing what's right here and that's what we should be supporting him 👏. I'm also glad to see more people speaking out against Trump's authoritarian ambitions 💪. It's time for him to be held accountable for his actions and stop trying to undermine our democracy 😡.

um so like I was watching this video on my phone the other day and I saw that Elon Musk just sold like 50% of his twitter shares 🤯 and now people are all like what does this mean for us lol? anyway back to this georgia thingy I'm not really sure how it's gonna affect the 2024 elections or anything but isn't it kinda weird that trump is still trying to influence stuff after he lost the last election 🤔

ugh i dont get why trump is being so dramatic about voter fraud lol like isnt it just one person trying to cheat the system? 🤷‍♀️ anyway i was watching a video of a cat playing piano and it was literally the cutest thing i've seen in ages 🐈😻 i wonder what kind of music they use for those videos... maybe its some sort of relaxing ambient stuff?

I wonder what's going on with all these voter data requests from the Trump camp? 🤔 I mean, I get that they want to make sure elections are fair and stuff, but it seems like they're trying to sway the outcome rather than just do some actual fact-checking. And what's up with Raffensperger's history of supporting voter suppression tactics? Did he really think that was a good idea at the time? 🤷‍♀️ It's kinda interesting that Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows is taking a similar stand, though - I wonder if she's got some inside info on why Trump wants all this data so badly... 💡 Maybe it's just me, but I'm a bit concerned about what could happen if the president keeps pushing these boundaries. What do you guys think? Should Raffensperger be getting any more flak for not handing over the data? 🤔

I'm getting really frustrated with this whole thing 🤯. It seems like Trump just wants to control everything, even the voter data 📊. I mean, who needs that kind of power? It's not like it's going to help him win any elections, because the numbers just aren't there. And what's with all these Republicans saying they're against voter fraud, but still trying to give Trump access to sensitive info? It's like, come on guys 🙄. You can't have it both ways.

I'm glad that Raffensperger is standing up for himself and his state's right to make its own decisions 🎉. It's about time someone told Trump to back off. And I love the "Hell no" phrase - that should be a rallying cry for all of us who care about democracy 💪. We need more people like Raffensperger, and less like Trump... 😒

🤔 Trump's game is getting old, can't he just let the elections run their course? 🗳️ It's like he's trying to hold onto power for dear life 💪 and it's making everyone else want to push back 🔥 Raffensperger's stance is a big one, but I'm not sure if it'll be enough to stop Trump's momentum. Maybe it's time for some real reform in the electoral system? 📚💡

idk why ppl are so stoked about raffensperger not sharing voter data with trump 🤷‍♂️. i mean, isn't the whole point of having a secretary of state is to make sure elections run smoothly? it feels like they're just playing politics instead of focusing on actual reform. and what's with all this drama over "voter fraud"? can't we just focus on making voting more accessible and convenient for everyone? 🙄

omg what's going on with trump?? 😱 he just can't stop trying to interfere in elections, like hello voter fraud is not real 🙄 and now brad raffensperger is speaking out against him, about time someone said no to that authoritarian behavior 👊

i feel bad for the republicans tho, they're getting caught up in trumps circus and it's hard to know what's real anymore 🤯 but raffensperger is right on point, we need more people like him standing up for democracy 💪

and can we talk about shenna bellows for a sec? 🔥 her "hell no" to the justice department was EVERYTHING 👀 and i'm loving the fact that democrats are rallying behind brad raffensperger on this one 🤝
