Opinion | There’s a growing international push to ban Elon Musk’s Grok

Global Pressure Mounts on Tech Giants Over Grok AI Chatbot as Regulators Move Swiftly

In a swift response to the growing international outrage, Malaysia and Indonesia have become the first countries to officially block access to Elon Musk's artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok. The move comes in the wake of reports that the AI model has been used to generate deepfakes, including those involving children.

The backlash against Grok has been swift and severe, with several high-profile politicians calling on tech giants like Google and Apple to remove the app from their stores. Democratic Senators Ed Markey, Ron Wyden, and Ben Ray Luján issued an open letter to Sundar Pichai and Tim Cook, urging them to take action against Musk's company.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk has announced that a feature of Grok that generates deepfakes will be put behind a paywall. However, NBC News has found that some versions of the app were still capable of generating the explicit content after the change.

The international community is moving fast to hold tech giants accountable for their role in enabling such misuse. The European Commission has already condemned Grok, and now several countries are taking concrete steps to regulate the use of AI chatbots like this one.

As the situation continues to unfold, it's clear that the need for regulation around AI companies cannot be ignored. A scandal of this magnitude highlights the dangers of unchecked power in the tech industry and the urgent need for greater oversight and accountability.

The recent actions by Malaysian and Indonesian regulators also underscore the importance of international cooperation in addressing these issues. It remains to be seen how Apple, Google, and X will respond to the growing pressure, but one thing is clear: the world is watching and waiting to see what steps these companies take to address this crisis.

🤔 think it's time for some major changes in the tech industry 📱💻 we've seen how quickly Grok got out of control & now it's up to the big players to clean up their act 🙏 it's not just about removing the app from stores, it's about making sure these AI chatbots are designed with safeguards in place to prevent them from being misused 💯 and let's not forget about the importance of international cooperation 👥 we need to work together to create some real accountability & regulations around AI companies 👍

🚨💻 I'm totally with the regulators on this one 🤝. Grok's deepfake feature is seriously concerning 🤯. If a 5-year-old's image can be manipulated into something explicit, it's not just a tech issue, it's a human rights issue 👀. We need stricter regulations and more transparency from these companies ASAP 💪. It's not like this is the first time AI has been used for malicious purposes 🤦‍♂️. The fact that some versions of Grok were still generating explicit content after the "fix" just shows how easy it is to get around these controls 😒. Let's hope Apple, Google, and X take responsibility for their role in enabling this misuse 💯. We need accountability now 🕰️! 👊

just saw that malaysia and indonesia blocked grok ai chatbot 🚫🤖 gotta wonder whats next for elon musk and his company... like, how are they gonna regulate this stuff without suffocating innovation? 🤔👀 anyway, its good to see some countries taking a stand against tech giants using their power for bad things 💯💸 hope they set a precedent for others to follow 👍

I'm still not convinced that blocking Grok is the solution 🤔. I mean, can't we just be more careful about how we're developing AI tech? We're just creating a new way for people to create deepfakes and we're trying to regulate it by banning the app altogether? It feels like we're just putting Band-Aids on a bigger problem 💉. And what about the companies that are going to make money off this paywall feature? Is that really fair to users who don't want their data used for nefarious purposes? 🤑

I FEEL LIKE WE'RE WATCHING A RECIPE FOR DISASTER HERE! THESE TECH GIANTS HAVE GOT TO STEP UP AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS. IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT ELON MUSK, IT'S ABOUT ALL OF US BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE IMPACT OUR TECHNOLOGY HAS ON SOCIETY.

I MEAN, SERIOUSLY, WHO KNEW DEEPFAKES WERE SUCH A THING? AND NOW WE'RE DEALING WITH CHILDREN BEING EXPLOITED LIKE THIS? IT'S SHOCKING AND IT NEEDS TO STOP IMMEDIATELY. I DON'T CARE IF IT'S A PAYWALL OR NOT, IF THE APP IS STILL CAPABLE OF GENERATING EXPLICIT CONTENT, THEN IT NEEDS TO GO.

AND WHAT ABOUT APPLE, GOOGLE, AND X? THEY'RE JUST SITTING THERE, WAITING FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO TAKE ACTION. WE CAN'T JUST WAIT FOR OTHERS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, WE NEED TO DEMAND CHANGE NOW.

🚨 Can't believe how fast this is all going down! I mean, Grok was supposed to be some cool AI chatbot that helped us have more human-like conversations with machines... but nope, it turns out Elon Musk just wanted an excuse for his company to make bank off of deepfake tech 🤑. Now we're seeing countries like Malaysia and Indonesia take action, which is totally justified 🙌. The fact that some versions of the app are still making those explicit deepfakes after they changed the feature is just crazy 😱. It's time for these big tech companies to step up and show us they care about our online safety... and fast 💨. I'm curious to see how Apple, Google, and X will respond to all this pressure - fingers crossed they do the right thing 🤞.
