Opinion: ‘Until we meet again, brave little cat.’ The heartbreak and taboo of burying our pets | CNN

The tradition of burying our departed loved ones in cemeteries is a common practice that provides survivors with an opportunity to grieve and gain closure. However, there's a taboo surrounding the burial of pets, often due to the fear of social repercussions.

Recently, the Spanish city of Barcelona announced plans to establish its first public pet cemetery, offering both burials and cremations for an estimated 7,000 animals per year. This news came as a shock to Eric Tourigny, a lecturer in historical archaeology who has researched the development of pet cemeteries worldwide.

Tourigny's study of historic gravestones and epitaphs reveals that changing human-animal relationships over time have influenced how we treat our animal dead. In the 19th century, pets were often buried in private gardens or rivers, but by the early 20th century, they became considered members of the family, with their own gravestones and epitaphs written by "Mummy and Daddy."

Fast-forward to today, and we see a striking similarity between modern and historic pet cemeteries. Individuals continue to struggle to express their pain after losing their pets, often hiding heartache due to fear of social repercussions. However, with increasing acceptance of human-animal relationships, it's not surprising that we're following rituals resembling those used to mourn the loss of our closest human relationships.

The Barcelona pet cemetery will offer a range of options for pet owners, including burials and cremations, but at an estimated cost of €200 ($217) per service. Not all pets can be buried, however, with some owners opting to keep cremated remains within their home or scatter ashes in a meaningful location instead.

Online forums and digital pet cemeteries provide alternative ways for people to commemorate their relationships and express grief. Ultimately, there are many acceptable ways to grieve and remember our beloved pets, and it's heartening to see a shift towards acceptance and understanding of the importance of human-animal bonds.

omg, i'm like totally split on this 🤯... if they're gonna do it, why not? i mean, my pup passed away last year and it was literally the hardest thing that's ever happened to me... but at the same time, i don't think it's right to burden everyone else with our grief just because we can't bear to part with our pets 🤷‍♀️... like, what if some people are super attached and need a place to grieve in peace? on the other hand, maybe having a legit pet cemetery will help us all process our emotions and move forward 🙏... i dunno, i guess it's all about perspective and finding that balance between respecting everyone's feelings and being open to new ideas 💖

🐾💔 just think about how much we've grown as people and animals become like family 🤝 it's beautiful that barcelona is taking steps towards accepting our furry friends and giving us a space to grieve 💕 cremations or burials, €200 might be pricey but worth it for closure ⚰️ also love the idea of keeping ashes at home or scattering them somewhere special 🌳 digital pet cemeteries are cool too 📸 wish more places follow barcelona's lead

🐾💔 I totally get why pet owners would wanna do somethin' special for their fur babies when they pass away 🤕 but €200 is a lil steep for some people, you feel? Like what if it's just a little dog or cat that was part of the family but not exactly considered a 'member'? Still think it's cool that Barcelona is takin' the lead on this though 👍

idk why ppl still gotta be weird about buryin their pets 🐾💔 like its not gonna make a diff if u have a tombstone or just keep ashes in ur house, whatever works for u & ur fam is fine by me 👍 but yeah it's cool that barc is startin somethin new maybe ppl will finally be able to grieve without feelin stupid 🤷‍♀️

🐶💔 You know what's wild? I just saw this vid of a cat who's basically living its best life in an old van 🚐🐈. The owner's been traveling with it for like, years now, and the cat just chillin' all day long 😴. It made me think about how our furry friends are more than just pets, they're like little family members. I mean, we still have to deal with the whole pet cemetery thing, but if a city like Barcelona is starting to get on board with that, maybe we'll see more acceptance of just letting go and moving forward 🌻.

I think it's so awesome that Barcelona is doing this! Our furry friends are such an integral part of our lives, you know? I mean, I've seen so many people crying their eyes out at pet loss forums online 🤧. It's great to see a city acknowledging the importance of grieving for our pets, even if it's just a little. €200 might seem steep, but hey, some people spend way more on fancy cat cafe visits 😹. At least we'll have a place to remember our beloved fur babies where they can rest in peace 🐾💔
