Opinion: Why is ‘60 Minutes’ amplifying the views of Marjorie Taylor Greene? | CNN

CBS' 60 Minutes recently featured Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene in an interview, despite widespread criticism of the decision to amplify her views on a national platform.

Critics argue that Greene's anti-Semitic and racist comments, as well as her support for conspiracy theories like QAnon and January 6 insurrectionists, make her a poor choice as a guest. Some have likened CBS' recent decision to feature Greene on their program to the now-departed CEO of CBS, Les Moonves', 2016 comment that Trump's candidacy was "damn good for CBS".

Moonves' remarks, made in a private conversation, showed his willingness to prioritize profit over principle when it came to covering a candidate who was widely unpopular. The fact that this mindset continues at 60 Minutes is disturbing.

In the recent interview with Lesley Stahl, Greene spoke about her views on various issues without being held accountable for her extremist statements. Critics point out that Stahl did not ask her to retract or correct her comments, nor did she challenge Greene's conspiracy theories directly.

CBS' decision to feature Greene on their program has been described as "spending its currency" by journalist Molly Jong-Fast, who believes that amplifying Greene's views is a form of financial support for extremist ideologies. David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland school shooting, expressed his disappointment and frustration with CBS' decision.

While some argue that 60 Minutes has featured controversial guests throughout its history, such as Timothy McVeigh and Ayatollah Khomeini, there are key differences between these cases and Greene's views on topics like anti-Semitism and QAnon.

The controversy surrounding Greene's appearance on 60 Minutes highlights the need for a responsible media to critically evaluate the individuals they feature in their programs. By choosing not to scrutinize or challenge Greene's extremist statements, CBS may be inadvertently perpetuating harm rather than promoting critical thinking and nuanced discussion.

I'm so tired of seeing folks like Marjorie Taylor Greene getting airtime on major platforms 🤯. I mean, come on, her views are straight-up toxic! I don't get why CBS is still giving her a platform, considering all the hurt she's caused with those anti-Semitic and racist comments 💔. And let's be real, if they're gonna give her time to spread their "currency" (as Molly Jong-Fast put it 🤑), shouldn't they at least fact-check her or ask her to back up her claims? I know some folks might say 60 Minutes has featured controversy guests before, but that doesn't excuse not holding Greene accountable for her words. We need more critical thinking and nuanced discussions, not just giving a megaphone to hate speech 🗣️.

💔📰 I'm still trying to understand why CBS would give Marjorie Taylor Greene a platform 🤯. It feels like they're just trying to boost ratings instead of doing some real journalism 📺. I mean, come on, the guy's got some seriously concerning views on anti-Semitism and racism. Shouldn't we be holding people in power accountable for spreading hate speech? 🙅‍♂️ The fact that Lesley Stahl didn't push her harder on those topics is just weird. It feels like CBS is more interested in being inclusive than actually promoting critical thinking 💡.

I dont get why cbs is giving Marjorie Taylor Greene so much airtime 🤔... I mean, i know she has a lot of followers but like, isnt that just because people are scared or misinformed? 🙅‍♀️ she makes some super extreme comments about stuff like being antisemitic and supporting conspiracy theories... isnt it our job as journalists to call her out on that kinda thing? 📰

i mean i get it, 60 minutes has done controversial interviews before but this feels different to me... its not just about freedom of speech or whatever... its about promoting critical thinking and nuanced discussion... if cbs is just gonna amplify her views without questioning them then im worried we're gonna be perpetuating harm 🚨

i think what bothers me most is that its not just marjorie taylor greene who has these kinds of views... there are tons of people out there who believe in similar stuff and they need to be held accountable too 🤝 maybe cbs should focus on giving a platform to ppl who are actually gonna challenge the status quo? 👊

I saw that thread about Marjorie Taylor Greene on 60 Minutes 🤔. I gotta say, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. Like, isn't the point of having a platform to share your views, also to hold people accountable for what they're saying? If CBS was worried about giving her a chance to share her thoughts without being challenged, shouldn't they've at least tried to fact-check some of that crazy stuff she's been spouting 🤷‍♀️. It just feels like they wanted to get in on the controversy without actually having a real conversation about it...

omg i'm so done with this 🤯 60 Minutes just gave Marjorie Taylor Greene a platform & it's like they're trying to profit off her toxic views 💸. I mean, what happened to holding ppl accountable for their statements? Lesley Stahl didn't even try to correct her or call out those conspiracy theories 🙅‍♀️. It feels like CBS is just trying to attract clicks rather than promote real conversation & critical thinking 📺. The fact that they featured Greene on a national platform despite all the backlash says a lot about their priorities... and it's not good 🤕.

🤔 I'm really disappointed to hear that 60 Minutes featured Marjorie Taylor Greene on their show despite all the backlash. It feels like they're more interested in ratings than taking a stand against hate speech. I mean, I get it, they want to be fair and balanced, but come on! Greene's views are literally anti-Semitic and racist 🚫. It's like CBS is saying "oh, we'll just amplify your conspiracy theories and watch the ratings roll in". No, that's not how journalism works, folks! We need media outlets that critically evaluate their guests and challenge their extremism 🤯. By not doing so, they're essentially giving a platform to harm and perpetuating misinformation. It's time for a change, imo 😔.
