Massive Strikes on Ukraine Leave One Dead, Millions Without Power
Russia unleashed a devastating attack on Ukraine overnight Saturday, killing at least one person and wounding four others in the capital city of Kyiv. The attack also left over 1.2 million properties without power nationwide.
Kyiv's military administration reported strikes in several districts, with a medical facility among the buildings damaged. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that Russia targeted the capital and four regions in Ukraine's north and east.
The attacks were widespread, with Russian forces launching 375 drones and 21 missiles, including two of its rarely deployed Tsirkon ballistic missiles. Ukraine's Air Force reported that the attacks also damaged critical infrastructure, leaving many without power or heat.
In the country's second-largest city of Kharkiv, at least 30 people were wounded during a drone attack, with 25 drones hitting several districts. A dormitory for displaced people and two medical facilities, including a maternity hospital, were among those struck.
Ukrainian Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal reported that over 800,000 Kyiv households remained without power, as did 400,000 in the Chernihiv region, north of the capital. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba said more than 3,200 buildings in Kyiv were still without heating.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions have been condemned by Ukrainian officials, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accusing Russia of acting "cynically" for launching the attack amid US-led trilateral talks on the war in the United Arab Emirates.
In response to the attacks, Russian forces launched a counter-attack on Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, damaging energy infrastructure but causing no casualties. The village of Starytsya was reportedly under Russian control, although Ukrainian officials disputed this claim.
Talks between Ukraine and Russia resumed for the second day in Abu Dhabi, with both sides expressing hope for an end to the conflict. However, a peace deal has yet to be reached, and further discussions are expected next weekend.
The US official leading the talks said that while progress had been made, more work was needed to find solutions. The talks also included face-to-face engagement between Ukrainian and Russian delegations, with negotiators tackling "outstanding elements" of Trump's peace framework.
In related news, the UAE government spokesperson confirmed that negotiations would continue in Istanbul after talks in Abu Dhabi, with Moscow open to further dialogue.
