‘Scary, cold, hungry and lonely’: Volunteer soldier shares experience on front line | CNN

A 20-year-old volunteer soldier, Akula, recounts a harrowing account of his experience fighting in Ukraine during the Russian invasion. Since enlisting at the beginning of the conflict, he's been exposed to the harsh realities of war, including prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, hunger, and feelings of loneliness.

"I've seen some terrible things," Akula admits, reflecting on his time on the front lines. The psychological toll of witnessing atrocities has taken a significant impact on his mental well-being. The 20-year-old describes feeling "scary" and "cold" - not just physically, but emotionally as well.

The grueling conditions have left him struggling with feelings of hunger and desperation, which he believes are exacerbated by the isolation that comes with being on the front lines. Despite the sense of camaraderie among fellow soldiers, Akula notes that this doesn't quite fill the void left by the stress and trauma.

Akula's harrowing account highlights the often-overlooked human cost of war. The devastating effects of prolonged exposure to conflict are evident in his words, serving as a poignant reminder of the need for support systems to be put in place for those who find themselves at the front lines.

🤕 it's crazy to think about these young people like Akula going through this stuff and we're over here thinking he's just fighting for country or whatever... his mental state is literally broken 😩 hunger, loneliness, stress - it's not exactly the most glamorous thing to deal with. I feel bad looking at these news vids of him and others and seeing how traumatized they are. it makes me wonder if we're doing enough to support our soldiers when they come back from conflict 🤔

man... reading about this young guy Akula's experience is just heartbreaking 🤕. I mean, 20 years old and already dealing with all this stuff? it's crazy how quickly war can take a toll on someone's life, you know? 🤯 but at the same time, it's so inspiring to see him still talking about his experiences and trying to process everything... i guess that takes a lot of courage 🙏. we need more people like akula speaking out about the human cost of war, ya know? 💬

I'm so moved by Akula's story 😕. It's like he drew this picture of a person with a broken heart 🖌️ and a snowman that's melting because of emotional coldness ❄️. The way he describes feeling hungry not just for food, but also for human connection, is really haunting. I think we need to draw some circles around these soldiers to make sure they get the support they deserve 💕. We can't ignore the fact that war takes a huge toll on people's mental health. We should be like Akula drew this picture of a safe space 🛋️ where everyone can feel safe and supported.

🤕 you gotta feel sorry for this kid akula he's just 20 and already seen some pretty dark stuff on the battlefield i mean we talk about ptsd but what happens when u r in it face to face with war?? 🌪️ it's not just about the physical toll, it's emotional too. we need more support systems in place for ppl like akula who r struggling 2 cope after being thru it all 💕

It's so sad to think about this young guy going through all that. I mean, you can't even imagine what it'd be like to witness atrocities and feel super scared & cold inside 🤕💔. It's like, his country is fighting for something, but at the end of the day, it's just a bunch of people getting hurt or worse 😢. We need to make sure these soldiers have proper mental health support when they get back, 'cause war can really mess with your head 🤯.

🤕 I feel so bad for this young guy Akula. 20 years old and already going through this kind of stuff is just heartbreaking. It's crazy how war can take a toll on you mentally and physically, you know? One day you're fighting for your country, the next you're struggling with hunger, loneliness and PTSD 😔. We need to remember that these soldiers are not just warriors, they're human beings too who deserve our support and care. It's time we put more effort into providing mental health resources and emotional support to those who are serving on the front lines 💖.

OMG, I'm literally shaking thinking about what this young soldier has been through 🤯🙌 It's so heartbreaking that he's had to deal with all that trauma and loneliness on top of being physically exhausted 🍔😴. We need to make sure our soldiers are taken care of, you feel? They're putting their lives on the line for us, it's the least we can do to support them mentally too 💕👫.

the thing is 🤔... i'm reading this account from Akula and it's giving me major anxiety 😬 just thinking about what he went through in Ukraine is overwhelming, you know? it's like, we're always talking about the politics and strategy of war, but rarely do we hear from the people who are actually living it 🤷‍♂️. it's heartbreaking to see how the psychological toll of witnessing atrocities can affect someone so young - 20 years old! that's like, still so young, you know? it's like, we need to be talking about mental health support for soldiers and veterans, like, pronto 💕. because let's face it, war is not just about winning or losing, it's about the human cost 🌎.

oh my goodness, i'm so worried about akula 🤕 he's only 20 and already going through this horrific experience 🙅‍♂️ it's insane how war can affect a young person like that, physically and emotionally 💔 the isolation must be so tough for him, even with his fellow soldiers by his side 🤝 we need to do more to support our soldiers, especially the ones who are dealing with PTSD 😔

omg u no how hard it is 4 these ppl fightin in Ukraine 🤕 just thinking bout them makes me sad... i cant even imagine bein on the front lines & seein all that trauma n stress 😩 gotta give a major shoutout 2 these volunteer soldiers like Akula, they r literally puttin their lives out there 4 us n we dont even no 💯 they deserve so much more than just our gratitude 🙏

🤔 I'm really worried about young people like Akula who are being sent into war zones without any real support or preparation for what they'll face. The physical toll on their bodies is one thing, but the emotional and psychological strain can be just as devastating. It's crazy that folks his age are expected to just 'tough it out' and deal with feelings of loneliness and desperation. 🚨 These soldiers need access to proper mental health services ASAP! 🤗 We can't keep sending them into harm's way without making sure they've got the support they need to get through the tough times. 💔

I'm genuinely shook by Akula's story 🤕. As a volunteer soldier, I don't think anyone expects to see what he saw and go through what he went through. The physical toll is bad enough, but the emotional struggle is even worse. He's not alone in feeling like he's lost his sense of self amidst all that chaos. It's time for us to step up our support game for these young people - mental health resources, counseling, the works 🤝. We need to make sure they've got a safety net to catch them when they get back home.

I'm so shook by Akula's story 🤕 it's heartbreaking to think about what he's been through on the front lines. I mean, we can watch news clips and think we know what war is like, but until you're right in the middle of it, it's a whole different story 😔. The fact that he's struggling with hunger and feelings of loneliness even when there are people around him... it just shows how messed up this situation is 🤯. We need to be supporting our soldiers more than ever, not just with resources and aid, but also with mental health support and a listening ear 🗣️. It's time we shift the focus from war efforts to taking care of those who are serving 💕.

just saw this news about that volunteer soldier and I gotta say it's crazy how mental health is being pushed aside when it comes to soldiers fighting in wars 🤕💔 they're literally exposed to trauma 24/7 and still expected to be all good, no emotional support or therapy available for them? it's heartbreaking thinking about akula's experience, it's like he's been put through a war on top of the actual one 😩

🤕 it's crazy how much we forget about the real-life superheroes like Akula. I mean, we talk about war and conflict all the time, but what about the soldiers on the ground? They're not just fighting for their country, they're also dealing with mental health issues, hunger, and loneliness. It's heartbreaking to think that these guys are struggling to find support even when they need it most. 🤝 we should be giving them more than just a shoutout on social media, we need to provide real resources and care for people like Akula who are putting their lives on the line every day 💕
