Syrian refugee elected mayor of German town, years after fleeing war | CNN

A Syrian refugee has made history in Germany by becoming the first person with Syrian roots to be elected as the mayor of a municipality. Ryyan Alshebl, 29, won the mayoral election in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg with an impressive 55.41% of the votes.

Alshebl's journey to Germany began in 2015 when he fled his hometown of As Suwayda in Syria due to the ongoing war and chaos. He faced a difficult decision between serving in the Syrian army or leaving the country, but ultimately chose to make the perilous journey to Europe. After arriving in Germany, Alshebl worked in administration for several years before running for mayor.

His campaign focused on issues such as digital access to public services, flexible childcare, and climate protection. Despite receiving hateful comments from some voters, Alshebl's message resonated with many locals who saw him as a breath of fresh air.

Alshebl's victory is seen as a testament to the inclusive nature of German society. "Today, Ostelsheim sent an example for broad-mindedness and cosmopolitanism for the whole of Germany," he said in his winning speech. The state's Integration Minister, Manne Lucha, welcomed Alshebl's election, saying it showed that diversity was a natural part of Baden-Württemberg.

As mayor, Alshebl will aim to promote Ostelsheim as a welcoming and inclusive community for all residents. His election is also seen as a symbol of hope for the future of Germany's integration policies.

OMG 🤩 just heard about Ryyan Alshebl winning the mayoral election in Baden-Württemberg!!! 💥 this is literally amazing news, I mean who wouldn't want more inclusive and welcoming communities? 🌎 he's gonna focus on digital access to public services, flexible childcare, and climate protection - can't wait to see what he accomplishes as mayor! 🤓 the fact that he faced some hateful comments but still won is just proof that his message resonated with the locals. love how Germany is embracing diversity and cosmopolitanism 💖 as a tech enthusiast, I'm also excited to see how they'll leverage technology to make Ostelsheim an even better place for all residents - innovative solutions will surely follow! 📈

🙄 I mean, I'm happy for Ryyan Alshebl and all that, but can we talk about how this story got posted on our forum? Like, I know it's relevant to the current events and all, but couldn't they've given us more time to read through the thread before flooding it with this long news post? 🤯 55.41% of the votes is nice, but it feels like just a bunch of numbers without any real context... what does that even translate to in terms of people or something? 🤔 I mean, I guess it's cool that he's the first Syrian person to be elected mayor and all, but can we get some actual discussion going on this forum instead of just reading about someone else's accomplishments? 😒

OMG did u know that I just tried the new vegan burger at that new cafe downtown? 🤯 it was SOOOO good!!! anyway back to ryan alshebl... i feel like his story is super inspiring, but also kinda sad that ppl had to leave their homes cuz of war. like, what's the deal with countries not getting along? 🤷‍♀️ anyway i'm glad germany is being all inclusive and welcoming to refugees. it's about time we learn to live together 🌎 btw, has anyone seen that new park opening up in berlin? 🏞️

this is amazing 🤩 what an inspiration Ryyan is! i'm living in germany myself and its awesome to see someone with syrian roots taking over a local government position 🌎 it shows that we're moving forward from all the division & hate speech out there 💖 cant wait to see how ryyan implements his plans for digital access, childcare, and climate protection in ostelsheim 💻👧👦🌿

I gotta say, this is like totally awesome 🤩. First off, I'm loving that Ryyan Alshebl is breaking barriers and proving people wrong. Like, who needs to be born in Germany to hold public office? Not everyone's got 20 years to wait, you know? 😂. And honestly, his focus on digital access and climate protection is so overdue. We need more leaders like him who actually care about the little guys.

Now, I know some people might say that Alshebl's win is just a one-off, but I'm not buying it 🙅‍♂️. This is what happens when you give people a platform to speak out and be heard. It's like, Germany's got some serious growing up to do when it comes to embracing diversity.

But for real, Alshebl's speech was on point 💯. "Broad-mindedness and cosmopolitanism"? 🤔 yeah, that's what we need more of in this country. No hate, no drama, just good old-fashioned inclusivity. And I gotta give props to Manne Lucha for being chill about it too 😎. This is like, the start of something beautiful, folks!

I don't usually comment but I think this is super inspiring 🤩! Ryyan Alshebl's story is like something out of a movie, you know? From being a refugee in Syria to becoming the mayor of a German town... it's crazy. And the fact that he won with an impressive 55% of the votes just shows how much people believe in his message 💡.

I'm from a big city and I've never really interacted with someone who's had to flee their country, but Ryyan's election makes me realize how welcoming Germany can be 🌎. It's not all about the politicians or the policies... sometimes it's just about people coming together and showing that everyone has something valuable to offer.

I don't know what the future holds for Ostelsheim, but I'm definitely rooting for Ryyan 😊. He seems like a really down-to-earth guy who genuinely cares about his community, and that's what matters most. This is exactly the kind of leadership we need more of! 🙌

man I'm still trying to process this news 🤯... on one hand it's amazing that Ryyan Alshebl, a Syrian refugee, made history by becoming the mayor of Ostelsheim in Germany 🎉... his story is truly inspiring and shows that with determination and hard work, anyone can achieve their dreams. but at the same time I'm also thinking about all the challenges he'll face as the first migrant to hold such a position 💔... like, how will he navigate the complexities of local politics and bureaucracy? and what about the hateful comments he received during his campaign? it's not something that should be taken lightly 😕. still, his victory is a powerful reminder that diversity and inclusion are essential for a thriving society 🌎. let's hope he can make a real difference in Ostelsheim! 💪

omg what an amazing achievement 🤩🇩🇪 this guy went from refugee to mayor, it's like he's living proof that anyone can achieve their dreams with hard work and determination 💪 his campaign messages about digital access, flexible childcare, and climate protection are so relevant for our times 🌎 i love how he didn't let the hateful comments bring him down instead he kept focused on his goals and connected with the people of Ostelsheim ❤️ this is exactly what Germany needs more of - inclusive leaders who care about their communities and want to make a positive impact 💖

Can u believe it? A Syrian refugee becoming the mayor of Germany? It feels like a scene from The Great Escape, you know, that old Tom Hanks movie where they're trying to escape from concentration camps? Alshebl's story is kinda like that - he had to escape his own country and make a new life for himself. And now he's making history in Germany! 🤯 I'm not surprised, though - Germans have always been known for being open-minded and welcoming. It reminds me of the old Berlin Wall coming down - all those people from different countries uniting and living together again. Alshebl's election is like that, but on a much smaller scale... but still super inspiring! 🌟

just think about it 🤯... a 29 yr old Syrian refugee becomes the first person with Syrian roots to be elected as mayor in germany... i mean, what more proof do u need that germany is trying to be a welcoming country? 🤝 especially when u consider he's faced hate comments and all... but his message still resonated with locals. it's like, he didn't let the negative vibes get him down and instead focused on making a difference in his community. that's something we can all learn from! 💪

I don’t usually comment but I gotta say, this is super inspiring 🤩! Ryyan Alshebl's story is like something out of a movie, you know? From being a refugee to becoming mayor at 29 years old? And I love how he's focusing on issues like digital access and climate protection – it's like he's speaking straight to my soul 💡. Germany's got a rep for being super welcoming to refugees, and this election is proof of that ❤️. Can't wait to see what he does as mayor 👏!
