The best theatre to stream this month: big and bold Bacchae ushers in new era at the National

The National Theatre is set to host an exciting lineup of performances this month, marking the beginning of its new artistic director Indhu Rubasingham's tenure. One of the most anticipated productions is Nima Taleghani's adaptation of Euripides' 'Bacchae', a bold and raucous spin on the classic Greek tragedy that features choreography by Kate Prince and a self-styled "raucous Greek chorus" led by Clare Perkins.

The National Theatre's Olivier theatre will be transformed into ancient Greece, with Taleghani bringing her own unique voice to the story. The production is set to premiere on February 6th at NT at Home, before being followed by a Q&A session with Rubasingham. This promises to be an unmissable event for Shakespeare enthusiasts and fans of bold storytelling.

Meanwhile, the Barbican Centre is gearing up for its summer musical season, which includes productions such as High Society and Sunday in the Park with George. The latest installment in the Barbican's ritzy repertoire is Cole Porter's 'Kiss Me, Kate', starring Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J Block as Shakespearean sparring partners in a comedy based on 'The Taming of the Shrew'. This production will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

In other news, French collective (La)Horde has released a documentary exploring the explosive rise of dance in Marseille's National Ballet. The film offers an intimate look at how social media and underground culture have influenced the trio's work.

Additionally, 'Trouble' is a tense dance film that explores themes of fear and vulnerability through close-up shots of its dancers. This unsettling production by Laura Bachman can be streamed on Arte.tv.

On the other side of theatre, Judi Dench joins a host of stars to reminisce about performing Shakespeare's 'The Twelfth Night Reunion', which is set to be staged at Richmond's Orange Tree in an enchanting evening of speeches and song.

Finally, for fans of Aimee Mann, 'Poor Judge' is a captivating dance-theatre cabaret available on demand from Philadelphia's Wilma Theater.

OMG, I'm low-key hyped for the new season at the National Theatre 🤩! Indhu Rubasingham is gonna bring some serious heat with that Bacchae adaptation, and I need to see it ASAP 🎭. And can we talk about Kate Prince's choreography? That girl is a GENIUS 💥. But what's up with Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate at the Barbican? Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J Block are literally my dream cast 👯‍♀️. I need to get those tickets ASAP!

omg i'm so stoked for the National Theatre's new season 🤩! Indhu Rubasingham's all about pushing boundaries and bringing fresh perspectives to the classic plays, which i think is super exciting 🎨 can't wait to see Nima Taleghani's take on Euripides' 'Bacchae' - sounds like it's gonna be a wild ride 🤯 and that Olivier theatre transformation into ancient Greece? wow! 🌟

omg have you seen any of nima taleghani's work?? she's like a genius!! i mean i've only read about this bacchae adaptation but it sounds insane with that raucous greek chorus Clare Perkins is part of lol love her style! anyway, national theatre is definitely stepping up their game this month cant wait for the premiere and that q&a session with indhu rubasingham too! 🤩

🤣👏[A meme of Judi Dench looking surprised with a speech bubble saying "Shakespeare? Again?!"] 😂

btw have you seen the trailer for that Euripides thing 🎥[A GIF of someone doing a weird dance with a Greek god in the background]

I'm so stoked about the new season at The National Theatre 🤩... but like, have they considered that maybe some people might not be into ancient Greece and Euripides? I mean, I love a good classic as much as the next person, but Bacchae sounds super niche. And what's up with the "raucous Greek chorus" thing? Is it just going to be a bunch of people yelling and being loud for no reason? 😒

On the flip side, Kate Prince's choreography must be amazing... I mean, have you seen her work before? 🤔 But like, is it really worth paying top dollar to see NT at Home when we can just watch some old Shakespeare performances on YouTube for free? 💸 And how come Cole Porter's 'Kiss Me, Kate' isn't being performed live anywhere? That sounds like such a great show!

And omg, I'm totally down for Judi Dench and the gang reminiscing about 'The Twelfth Night Reunion'... but can we please get some behind-the-scenes peeks at the rehearsals or something? 🤗 I want to know what really went into making that production tick.

But like, I've heard great things about 'Trouble', so maybe I'll check it out... if only because Laura Bachman's direction sounds super intense and thought-provoking. 🎬

🤯 The National Theatre just got a serious shot of adrenaline - who else but Nima Taleghani can turn Euripides into a raucous rave? 🎉 Kate Prince's choreo is gonna be EVERYTHING! 👏

omg I'm so stoked about the National Theatre's new lineup 🤩! especially that Nima Taleghani's adaptation of Euripides' 'Bacchae' sounds insane ! the idea of a raucous Greek chorus is literally my jam 🎶 and Kate Prince's choreography is always on point 💃. Indhu Rubasingham as artistic director is a huge deal for me, I love how she's pushing boundaries with bold storytelling. and can we talk about the Barbican Centre's summer musical season? 'Kiss Me, Kate' starring Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J Block sounds like an absolute blast 🎭!

I'm loving the vibe of Nima Taleghani's adaptation of 'Bacchae', it sounds so lit! 🤩 I mean, who wouldn't want to see Kate Prince's choreography bring ancient Greece to life? And Clare Perkins' "raucous Greek chorus" is gonna be EVERYTHING. But, for real though, have you guys considered the fact that Euripides' 'Bacchae' was actually banned in ancient Athens due to its anti-monotheistic themes? It's wild to think about how a production like this can spark so much conversation and debate.

On a related note, the Barbican Centre's summer musical season sounds like it's gonna be fire, but isn't High Society kinda an older show? I mean, didn't Cole Porter write that back in the 1920s or something? Anyway, 'Kiss Me, Kate' is supposed to be this hilarious comedy about Shakespearean sparring partners, which I'm here for! 🤣

And can we talk about Judi Dench's involvement with 'The Twelfth Night Reunion'? That's some star power right there. But, um, isn't she, like, a national treasure or something? Anyway, it's always dope to see her get involved in projects that celebrate Shakespeare's work.

Lastly, I'm curious about this documentary by (La)Horde exploring the rise of dance in Marseille's National Ballet. Social media and underground culture can be so influential, right? It'll be interesting to see how they weave all those threads together into a cohesive story.

So I'm curious about this Euripides thingy... like what made Nima Taleghani want to do a spin on the classic Greek tragedy? Is it just because it's a 'classic' or is there something specific about it that resonates with her? 🤔 And Kate Prince is a choreographer, cool! But how does she fit into the whole production, like is she doing this thing called "choreography" or what? 😊

😊 The resurgence of classical theatre seems to be gaining momentum this month, with the National Theatre and Barbican Centre both premiering exciting productions 🎭. Nima Taleghani's adaptation of Euripides' 'Bacchae' promises to be a standout event, showcasing a bold reimagining of ancient Greek tragedy 🤩. Meanwhile, Cole Porter's 'Kiss Me, Kate' at the Barbican Centre is sure to delight fans of witty banter and musical comedy 👏. It'll be intriguing to see how these productions resonate with audiences this year ⚡

I gotta say, I'm kinda skeptical about all the fuss around 'Bacchae'. Like, Euripides was a total game-changer in ancient Greece, but is this modern adaptation really gonna bring anything new to the table? 🤔 The fact that it's got choreography by Kate Prince and Clare Perkins just seems like a marketing ploy to me... I mean, don't get me wrong, those ladies are talented, but is their presence alone enough to make this production worth watching? Maybe I'm just being a contrarian, but I'll be keeping an eye on it... 👀
