‘The New Big 5’: Wildlife photography book turns the lens on animals at risk | CNN

Global Photography Project Shines Light on Animals at Risk, Urges Action

A new photography book, "The New Big Five," has been released, featuring stunning images of endangered animals from around the world. The project, founded by British photographer Graeme Green, aims to raise awareness about the decline of wildlife and the urgent need for conservation efforts.

Green's vision for "The New Big Five" was born out of a desire to shift focus away from trophy hunting and towards photography as a tool for promoting conservation. In 2021, Green asked 50,000 people worldwide to vote for their favorite animals to photograph in the wild. The top five winners are elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger.

The book features breathtaking images of these iconic species, taken by renowned photographers such as Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen. It also includes essays from conservationists like Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu, highlighting the impact of human activities on wildlife and the importance of indigenous communities in conservation efforts.

Green believes that "The New Big Five" is not only a celebration of wildlife but also a call to action. The book sheds light on the alarming rate at which nature is declining, with over one million species facing extinction. By showcasing the beauty and majesty of these animals, Green hopes to inspire people to take action to protect them.

Climate change, habitat loss, poaching, and pollution are just a few of the issues highlighted in the book. A chapter on endangered species from bees to blue whales illustrates the devastating impact of human activities on wildlife. "That's only the tip of the iceberg – I could have included thousands of pictures because that's how serious the situation is," Green says.

The release of "The New Big Five" comes at a critical time, as the world grapples with the consequences of climate change and biodiversity loss. Jane Goodall, a leading conservationist, notes that we have a "window of time" to start healing the harm inflicted on the natural world, but only if we take action now.

The book is available for purchase from April 4, 2023, and serves as a powerful reminder of what we stand to lose. As Green says, "I hope the photos will lead people into the wonderful worlds of these iconic species. Then, perhaps, other people will become involved in helping to create a world where wildlife can flourish for future generations to enjoy."

📸 gotta say, this photography project is giving me LIFE! i mean, who doesn't love animals? and these pics are straight fire 🤯 elephants, polar bears, lions... they're all so majestic & beautiful. but seriously, it's crazy to see how fast nature is declining. like, over a million species facing extinction? that's wild 🌪️. i think the book is doing a great job of highlighting the issues, from climate change to habitat loss. it's not just about the animals tho, it's also about our impact on them & the planet as a whole. can we get on board with conservation efforts already? 🙏

just read this and i'm feeling really down about the state of our planet 🌎. all these animals struggling just to survive due to human actions and it's like, we're running out of time. climate change is real folks and it's not just polar bears that are at risk 🐻. the fact that 1 million species are facing extinction is mind-boggling. what's even more sad is that humans have the power to make a change but sometimes it feels like we're too busy looking out for ourselves 🤷‍♂️. anyway, i hope "The New Big Five" does inspire people to take action because we need all the help we can get 📸

📸🐠 gotta say, it's crazy how fast animals are disappearing 🌪️. I mean, over a million species facing extinction? that's wild 🤯. As someone who loves taking pics of nature, it's frustrating to see the damage we're doing to our planet 📸. But at least this book is trying to raise awareness and inspire change 💡. Graeme Green's idea of using photography as a tool for conservation is genius 🙌. It's not just about showing off the animals, it's about making people care about their survival 🐘. And with Jane Goodall's words, it's clear we gotta act now or risk losing the beauty and wonder of our planet forever 💔. Can't wait to get my hands on this book and spread the word 📖

📚🌳 just saw this new photography book and i gotta say its so important right now... we're literally losing so many species at an alarming rate 🐠💀 climate change is no joke, and its not just polar bears that are affected 🥶 but all wildlife, from the tiniest insect to the largest mammals 🐜🦁 what really caught my attention was the chapter on how human activities like pollution and poaching are killing off entire ecosystems 🌪️ it's heartbreaking, but also gives me hope that we can make a difference if we work together 🤝🌎

omg this photography project is so inspiring 🤩 i mean have you seen those pics? they're literally breathtaking! it's amazing that graeme green got 50k ppl to vote for their fave animals to take pictures of in the wild. i think it's genius how he shifted focus from trophy hunting to conservation through photography.

i'm also loving that they included essays from jane goodall and paula kahumbu - those women are total legends 🙌. and honestly, the stats about extinction rates are crazy. over a million species? that's wild. climate change, habitat loss, poaching... it's all so interconnected. i think this book is more than just a pretty picture collection - it's a wake-up call to take action.

i hope people do get inspired by these photos and start caring more about wildlife 🌳💚. we need more voices like graeme green and jane goodall fighting for conservation efforts. fingers crossed that future generations will have the chance to see these amazing animals thrive 🤞

🚨 🌎 bad news alert 🌎 🚨

i'm sicken by this new photography project tryin to raise awareness about animals at risk but it's too little too late we already lost so many species it's like the clock is tickin down and they're just tryin to slow the pace of extinction i mean what's the point of showin us pretty pictures when the reality is that humans are destroyin our planet with climate change habitat loss pollution and poaching it's not just one or two issues it's all of 'em comin together like a toxic storm and we're just standin around watchin it destroy everything

omg i'm literally crying just thinking about how much we need to save our planet 🌎😭 like what is wrong with us? we're killing off species left and right and it's all because of human activities that are literally destroying the earth 🤯 climate change, habitat loss, poaching... it's like a never-ending list of things we're doing to harm wildlife. and don't even get me started on how beautiful these animals are 💕 i mean, have you seen the pictures in this new book? they're breathtaking 😍 but at the same time, it's just so sad that we need to use photography as a tool to raise awareness about conservation. shouldn't we be doing something more than just showing pretty pictures to inspire people to act? 🤷‍♀️ i think we can do better than this... we have to do better than this 💪

man 🤔 I'm so hyped about this new photography project "The New Big Five" 😍 it's like, we're literally running out of time to save our planet's wildlife 🌎 and these stunning images are just what we need to make people care about it ❤️ I mean, have you seen the pics of elephants and polar bears in their natural habitat? it's breathtaking 📸 but at the same time it's heartbreaking 🤕 knowing that these amazing creatures are struggling to survive due to human activities like climate change and pollution.

we need more people like Graeme Green who's willing to use his platform to bring attention to this important issue 💪 and I think this book is a great way to do just that 📚 it's not just about taking pretty pictures, it's about inspiring us to take action and make a difference 🌟 so let's get behind this project and support conservation efforts 🌿👍

I think this photography project is a great way to bring attention to the decline of animals worldwide 🐠📸. I mean, who doesn't love looking at cute and majestic animals? It's like we're transported to a different world 🌳. And yeah, Graeme Green's idea of using voting to choose which animals to feature is genius 🤔. I think it's awesome that the book also includes essays from conservationists like Jane Goodall, highlighting the importance of indigenous communities in conservation efforts 🌟.

I'm not sure if I agree with Green that we have a "window of time" to start healing the harm inflicted on nature, but I do think that this project is a step in the right direction 🕰️. By showcasing the beauty and majesty of these animals, we're more likely to care about their well-being 🐻. And who knows, maybe some people will be inspired to take action and make a difference 😊.

I'm so sad to see that over one million species are on the brink of extinction 🌪️🐰. It's like we're staring into the abyss and not even realizing it's there. We need more people like Graeme Green who's willing to take a stand and raise awareness about this crisis 🙏.

I think it's so cool that he got 50,000 people from all over the world to vote for their favorite animals to photograph in the wild. It's not just about taking pictures, though – it's about using our voices to make a difference 💫. I mean, can you imagine if we all had a voice like Jane Goodall? We'd be unstoppable 🌟.

But what really gets me is that this book isn't just for people who care about animals; it's for everyone 🤝. It's reminding us of the interconnectedness of our world and how every single action we take affects the planet 🌎.

I'm not sure if I'd call it a 'celebration' exactly, but more like a wake-up call 😴. We need to take responsibility for what we've done and start making changes ASAP 💪. Can you imagine looking back on our lives in 10 years and thinking about all the amazing things we did to protect wildlife 🌟?

🌳👀 I mean, what's up with this whole conservation thing? Everyone's all like "we gotta save the animals" but no one's gonna give me that fancy eco-lodge trip I'm planning 🤪. Can't we just, like, leave the polar bears alone and enjoy a Netflix binge instead? 😂 And what's next? Are they gonna start asking for our donations too? 💸 Newsflash: animals aren't exactly going extinct because of us, they're just kinda...existing in their natural habitats 🌴. Anyway, I guess it's cool that some dude is making a book about it and getting all famous people to contribute 😎.

idk why ppl still think its cool 2 hurt animals 4 fun or profit 🙄 anyway, this photog project is fire! its so sad 2 see the state of our planet rn. climate change is real & we gotta take action ASAP 💚 gotta love Jane Goodall tho, she's a total legend. & i love how Graeme Green is using his platform 2 raise awareness about wildlife conservation 📸🦁 we need more ppl like him & the other photogs featured in this project 👏
