Threat to shoot up Atlanta Airport averted after man arrested with AR-15

A chilling threat to "shoot it up" at one of the nation's busiest travel hubs was foiled Monday morning when authorities apprehended a 49-year-old Georgia man at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Billy Joe Cagle, who faces multiple charges related to terroristic threats and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, allegedly livestreamed his intentions on social media.

The airport's South Terminal was the scene of chaos when officers arrived at 9:29 am after receiving an alert about a potential threat from Cartersville police. Video footage showed Cagle walking towards a crowded TSA checkpoint before being apprehended by officers who were armed and ready to respond. In total, 27 rounds of ammunition were found in the back seat of his Chevrolet flatbed pickup truck.

Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated that Cagle was unarmed when arrested at 9:54 am, adding that video showed him heading toward a crowded checkpoint. Investigators have determined that he used two sets of handcuffs to restrain the man, who is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs over 320 pounds.

Cagle's arrest came after his family alerted authorities following his social media livestream, where he claimed to be traveling to Atlanta with the intention of "shooting it up." The swift response by police prevented what could have been a tragic outcome for travelers.

Mayor Andre Dickens praised the quick thinking and cooperation between Cagle's family members, Cartersville police, APD, airport officials, and law enforcement agencies that made the arrest possible.

The motive behind Cagle's actions is still under investigation. Schierbaum has said the case remains open as investigators seek to determine why the individual made this threat in the first place.

In addition to the charges against him, it was revealed that Billy Joe Cagle had a prior record of drug possession and a "pretty significant" arrest history.

The chief also pointed out the potential dangers posed by individuals who are mentally challenged and possess firearms, stating that the combination could have deadly consequences.

The swift action by law enforcement officials has saved countless lives at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

just heard about this crazy story ๐Ÿคฏ, can't believe some dude was threatening to shoot up atlanta airport on social media and ppl were able to stop him in time, it's like a movie plot ๐Ÿ˜ฒ, so glad no one got hurt, gotta be careful what we share online ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ’ป, and the chief's point about mentally challenged ppl with firearms is super valid, we need more awareness on that topic ๐Ÿ’ก

I'm so relieved to hear that the threat at Atlanta Airport was averted ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ. My heart goes out to all the people who could've been in harm's way. It's just horrific to think about what could've happened if someone like Billy Joe Cagle had actually carried out his threat ๐Ÿ’”. The fact that his family alerted authorities after seeing his livestream is just amazing, it shows how loved ones can be a lifeline during these crazy times ๐Ÿ™Œ. I can only imagine how scary that must've been for everyone involved. Law enforcement did an incredible job in responding quickly and keeping people safe ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Hopefully, we'll get to the bottom of what motivated Billy Joe Cagle's actions so we can prevent this from happening again ๐Ÿ˜”

I mean, come on ๐Ÿคฏ, this is crazy! Like, a dude just livestreams his plans to shoot up an airport and then gets caught because his own family tells the cops? What's next? A reality TV show about domestic terrorism ๐Ÿ˜‚?

And can we talk about how big of a problem this guy's mental health is? I mean, 6'3" and over 320 pounds... that's a whole lotta instability ๐Ÿคฏ. And then you gotta throw in the fact that he's got a history of drug possession and arrest records... it's just a ticking time bomb waiting to go off ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

But seriously though, kudos to the authorities for swooping in and saving the day. I mean, we can't have some random dude with an AR-15 running amok at the airport, right? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. It's just common sense ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

Ugh, this guy Cagle is literally the definition of a nightmare come true ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ‘Š 1 min before his arrest he's livestreaming his intentions and ppl can see him walking towards the TSA checkpoint... like what even is that? ๐Ÿคฏ how did his family not know about this threat and not report it sooner?! ๐Ÿค”

anyway, I'm just glad that law enforcement was able to step in and save lives. 27 rounds of ammo in his truck? that's a whole lotta potential harm ๐Ÿ˜ฌ and the fact that he used handcuffs to restrain himself is just insane ๐Ÿ’ฅ

I can only imagine how scared those travelers must have been. it's crazy to think about how quickly this could've escalated into something deadly ๐Ÿคฏ but thankfully, the authorities were able to act fast and prevent a tragedy from happening ๐Ÿ™

man this is just another example of how crazy people can get on social media ๐Ÿคฏ and then someone's gotta swoop in and save the day... or in this case, everyone would've been dead lol. I mean, it's not like we haven't seen this before, but still, 27 rounds of ammo in a pickup truck? that's just asking for trouble ๐Ÿ’€. And what's up with all these guns being passed around like they're toys? it's just a recipe for disaster ๐Ÿšจ. can't believe some people's lives ๐Ÿ™„.

omg this guy was literally about to cause a disaster ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ˜ฑ i mean what if he actually pulled through with his threat? we dont no what kinda state of mind that guy was in but its just scary that someone could threaten such a big target and still manage to get caught ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ the fact that hes got a history of drug possession and arrests is super concerning too ๐Ÿ‘Ž at least the cops stepped up fast and made the arrest but lets be real, we cant afford to have this kinda threat being taken lightly anytime soon ๐Ÿ’”

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this incident... I mean, can you even imagine walking towards a crowded TSA checkpoint with an AR-15 and just chillin' ๐Ÿ˜ฑ? It's lucky that the authorities were able to spring into action and apprehend Billy Joe Cagle before things took a turn for the worse. The fact that his family alerted them after seeing his livestream on social media is just another example of how vigilant communities can be in preventing these kinds of situations. And, unfortunately, it highlights the potential dangers posed by individuals with mental health challenges who also happen to possess firearms ๐Ÿšจ. It's a sobering reminder that we need to be more proactive in addressing mental health issues and ensuring public safety.

I mean what's up with this guy? Livestreaming his own terror plot on social media? That's like a digital invitation to come and get him ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I'm glad the airport was ready for him, but can't we just have some common sense and report these threats instead of having someone literally livestream their plans? And what's up with the handcuffs? Using his own handcuffs to restrain himself? Genius move, Billy Joe ๐Ÿ˜’. Seriously though, 27 rounds of ammo found in the back seat of a truck is not something you see every day... thankfully no one was hurt and it all went down without incident ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

I'm telling you, this is just too convenient ๐Ÿ˜’. A guy makes a threat on social media, and his family rats him out? ๐Ÿ™„ It's almost like they wanted the police to catch him. And what's with the video footage of him being restrained by his own handcuffs? ๐Ÿค” That's some weird stuff right there. Not to mention the 27 rounds of ammo in his truck... that's a whole lotta guns. ๐Ÿ’€ I'm not saying this guy is innocent or anything, but something just doesn't add up. What if he was just trying to spark some kind of conversation? Or maybe even get some attention from the authorities? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's all so suspicious... ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ

man this is just crazy ๐Ÿคฏ... can't even walk into an airport without some dude threatening to shoot everyone up lol what's wrong with people these days? ๐Ÿ˜’ like seriously how hard is it to just keep your cool and chill? the fact that his family reported him and helped take him down is super impressive tho ๐Ÿ‘ and i hope they're doing okay after all this drama... it's just a shame that this guy was able to get away with stuff in the past because now he's facing serious charges ๐Ÿค”

I'm just glad it didn't end badly ๐Ÿ™. I mean, can you even imagine what would've happened if someone actually did try to shoot up that airport? It's crazy how social media can be a double-edged sword, right? On one hand, it's amazing how the guy's own family tipped off the authorities, but on the other hand, it's wild that he felt comfortable enough to make such a threat in the first place ๐Ÿคฏ. And 27 rounds of ammo just lying around in his truck is just straight-up alarming ๐Ÿ”ซ. I'm all for keeping our airports and public spaces safe, but we gotta be careful not to jump to conclusions or stereotype people who are mentally challenged ๐Ÿค.

man this is crazy what if he had actually pulled it off who knows how many ppl would be dead rn ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ฑ and yeah its super lucky that his fam reported him first or idk what the outcome wouldve been and also its wild that he thought livestreaming his threat would be a good idea lol dont they know thats just gonna get them caught ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ฅ

I donโ€™t usually comment but this whole thing is just crazy ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, can you imagine walking into a crowded airport and people literally finding out about it on social media? Itโ€™s wild that his own family alerted the cops in time to prevent something from happening ๐Ÿ˜ฒ And yeah, the fact that he was carrying 27 rounds of ammo and two sets of handcuffs is just terrifying ๐Ÿ’ฅ I donโ€™t know what was going through his head but itโ€™s clear that this guy poses a huge threat to everyone around him ๐Ÿค•

Man, this is a clear case of how social media can be both a blessing and a curse ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, if Cagle hadn't livestreamed his intentions, who knows what could have happened? It's like he was trying to stir up some kind of chaos at the airport, and it just shows how vulnerable we are when it comes to online threats ๐Ÿ’ป.

And let's talk about the mental health aspect here ๐Ÿค”. Cagle's family did the right thing in reporting him, but it raises questions about what kind of support systems are in place for people who might be struggling with their mental health and feel like they can lash out like this.

It's also worth noting that our current gun laws need to be re-examined ๐Ÿšซ. I mean, Cagle was able to possess an AR-15 and even carry it on a public transportation vehicle? That just doesn't seem right. It highlights the need for stricter regulations when it comes to gun ownership.

The fact that the police were able to respond quickly and prevent any harm is definitely a testament to their training and preparedness ๐Ÿšจ. But we can't keep relying on chance events like this; there needs to be more comprehensive measures in place to prevent these types of threats from happening in the first place ๐Ÿ’ก.

omg ๐Ÿ˜ฑ just heard about this guy Billy Joe Cagle trying to livestream his plans to shoot up atlanta airport ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ฅ and it's crazy how quickly the police were able to swoop in and stop him ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ 27 rounds of ammo found in his truck, can you imagine what could've happened ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. i'm all for people having a voice online but not when they're threatening violence like that ๐Ÿคฏ. mayor andre dickens is right though, it's the team effort between law enforcement and family members that made this arrest possible ๐Ÿ’ช. hope cagle gets the help he needs (prob should be in therapy lol). can't believe someone so big and strong (6'3" 320 lbs) would even consider doing something like this ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿšซ

Man oh man... this is super scary ๐Ÿคฏ just think about how many people were in that airport, and some dude was livestreaming his intent to shoot it up ๐Ÿ“น he could've easily caused so much harm and destruction. But thank goodness the cops showed up and arrested him before things got out of hand ๐Ÿ’ช I mean, 27 rounds of ammo in his truck? That's a whole lot of firepower ๐Ÿ˜ฑ and that guy was big too, over 320 pounds... poor family members who had to report their cousin ๐Ÿค— for what he did. Still gotta wonder why people do this kinda thing though... is it just desperation or something? ๐Ÿค”

I'm literally shaking my head right now ๐Ÿคฏ. Can't believe some people think it's a good idea to threaten to shoot up an airport... like, what even is that?! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ And the fact that he livestreamed it on social media? That's just crazy talk! ๐Ÿ’ฅ I mean, I get that people can be out of their minds sometimes, but this dude's behavior was just irresponsible. Thankfully, the police were able to swoop in and stop him before anyone got hurt.

I'm all for being vigilant and taking threats seriously, but come on... we need to find better ways to deal with these kinds of situations than just arresting someone who's clearly not thinking straight ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. And what really gets me is that this guy has a history of drug possession and arrest - it's like, you'd think he'd have learned his lesson by now. Anyway, glad no one got hurt, but seriously... what's going on with our society right now?! ๐Ÿ˜•

๐Ÿ™„ I mean, can't people just think before they livestream their crazy plans on social media? Like, what's the point of even making a threat if you're not gonna follow through? And what's with the AR-15 and 27 rounds of ammo in his truck? Sounds like someone was itching for a shootout. ๐Ÿšซ On the bright side, I guess the fact that his family reported him and stuff worked out. The whole thing could've been way worse if they hadn't piped up. And yeah, it's weird that he used two sets of handcuffs to restrain himself... sounds like a total red flag right there. ๐Ÿค”
