In a surprise move, former US President Donald Trump has commuted the prison sentence of George Santos, a 37-year-old politician who served in Congress for just over a year. Trump took to Truth Social on Friday evening to announce his decision, stating that he believes Santos was "horribly mistreated" while in solitary confinement and should be released from prison immediately.

A senior White House official confirmed that the president's decision was made after hearing from multiple individuals who supported Santos' commutation. The move comes just months after Santos began serving his 87-month federal prison sentence, which he received for wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft-related charges.

Santos' case drew widespread attention due to discrepancies in his resume and personal backstory, as well as allegations of misuse of campaign funds. His time in office was marked by controversy, including a House Ethics Committee investigation that found "substantial evidence" of wrongdoing.

Trump's decision has been welcomed by Santos' lawyer, who described the commutation as "draconian" and said his client is now "overjoyed" at being released from prison. The White House did not provide further explanation for the president's motivations behind the commutation.
