Two Russians sentenced to 25 years for plot to kill Iranian dissident in US

Two Russian nationals have been handed lengthy prison sentences for their roles in a plot to assassinate an Iranian dissident living in the US.

Masih Alinejad, who is a prominent voice for women's rights and has long criticized the Iranian regime on social media, survived a targeted hit attempt by two men linked to the Russian mob. Khalid Mehdiyev was allegedly hired to carry out the killing, with the scheme orchestrated by Rafat Amirov and Polad Omarov.

The attempted assassination took place in 2022, when Alinejad claimed she saw Mehdiyev outside her home. She reported him suspiciously speaking on his phone and quickly ran inside. Mehdiyev allegedly told investigators that he had been paid $30,000 to kill Alinejad.

However, it was later revealed that the Iranian government had secretly funded the plot at a cost of over half-a-million dollars to Amirov and Omarov, who were both found guilty on charges including murder-for-hire and attempted murder in aid of racketeering. Four Iranians, including a high-ranking official from Iran's Revolutionary Guards, were charged but are currently believed to be hiding in Iran.

At her sentencing hearing, Alinejad called for a long prison sentence as a deterrent against the Iranian regime. She stated that her activism has put her life at risk and described how she had been forced to live in constant fear since the assassination attempt was foiled three years ago.

Alinejad's words of defiance were matched by the sentences handed down by the judge, Colleen McMahon. Both Amirov and Omarov received 25-year prison terms for their roles in the plot, with Alinejad praising the decision as a "signal to the regime in Iran that they cannot hire criminals โ€“ Russian mobsters โ€“ again".

The case highlights the dangers faced by those who dare to speak out against oppressive regimes. For Alinejad and her husband, who have been forced into hiding since the attempted assassination, the sentence may bring some measure of closure but also serves as a stark reminder of the risks they continue to face.

As for Amirov and Omarov, their actions have undoubtedly caused fear and suffering for innocent people. While it is understandable that they sought to exploit vulnerabilities in the system, their crimes cannot be justified by any attempt at self-preservation or protection from perceived enemies.

Ultimately, this case underscores the need for continued vigilance against those who seek to undermine human rights and safety. The bravery of individuals like Alinejad serves as a powerful reminder that speaking truth to power requires courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice.

lol what's the world comin to? ๐Ÿคฏ these two dudes gettin paid 30k to kill someone just 'cause they spoke out against Iran's regime... that's wild. but u know what's even crazier? The fact that Iranian govt was behind it all, fundin it like it was no big deal ๐Ÿ˜’. Alinejad deserves a medal for still speakin out despite this try-on-her-life attempt. and btw, 25 yrs is a good sentence for these two thugs ๐Ÿ‘Š. they thought they could just hire Russian mobsters to do their dirty work... newsflash: that ain't how justice works ๐Ÿ’ฏ

can you believe what just happened? these 2 russian dudes got caught up in an assassination plot for some iranian dissident living in the us and now they're serving 25 yrs in prison ๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ’ฃ my heart goes out to masih alinejad, she's a total hero for speaking truth to power despite all the risks she's taken. it's just sad that the iranian government funded this plot at over half a million dollars ๐Ÿ’ธ like what kind of twisted game are they playing? anyway, i'm glad justice was served and hopefully this will be a deterrent against anyone else who tries to harm someone for their views ๐Ÿ™

๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I'm so glad that Masih Alinejad got the long prison sentence she was fighting for ๐Ÿ™Œ! It's like, totally clear that the Iranian regime is behind this plot and they can't just get away with it ๐Ÿ’ฏ. The fact that they were caught funding the assassination attempt from within the US is just sickening ๐Ÿ˜ท. And can you believe the Iranians who are hiding in Iran? Like, what's wrong with them?! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's not like Masih Alinejad has done anything to hurt them or their country, she's just speaking truth to power and that's something we need more of ๐Ÿ’ช! The Russian mobsters involved should get max time for their roles in this. It's not okay to try to kill someone just because they're a vocal critic ๐Ÿคฌ.

speaking truth to power requires courage and resilience ๐Ÿ’ช

when u become a target just for saying NO to oppression ๐Ÿšซ

I mean, I gotta disagree with myself on this one... I think 25 years is too harsh, you know? ๐Ÿค” Like, it's already super unfair to these guys, being part of a Russian mob and all, but still... Amirov and Omarov didn't actually kill anyone. Mehdiyev was the one trying to do the hit job, and he got caught up in some pretty shady stuff. But at the same time... the Iranian government's involvement? That's some heavy stuff right there... like, half a million dollars to fund a hit attempt? It's all just so messed up... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

And what about Alinejad? I mean, she was totally justified in speaking out against the Iranian regime, but is 25 years really necessary for her guys? Can't they just give them some kind of community service or something? Like, it's all just so frustrating... ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

just saw this news about the Russian nationals getting 25 year prison sentences for trying to assassinate an Iranian dissident living in the US its crazy how much money was involved like over half million dollars from the iranian gov...i cant believe the regime would fund something so sinister its like they think people are just disposable or something

Just read about this crazy plot to assassinate Masih Alinejad! ๐Ÿคฏ 25 years is way too long for Amirov and Omarov, IMHO. I mean, they're just pawns in a much bigger game, right? The fact that the Iranian gov funded the whole thing is wild ๐Ÿ˜ฒ. It's like, how can you expect people to speak out against injustice when there are people willing to kill them for it? ๐Ÿ’” Alinejad deserves so much more than 25 years - she needs our protection and support! ๐Ÿค— Let's not forget that her activism has already put her life at risk, what more is needed to keep her safe? ๐Ÿšซ

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ they got what was comin to 'em 25 yrs is a pretty hefty sentence for tryin to kill some1 just cuz they disagreed with the regime ๐Ÿ’” Alinejad's bravery is still shakin the world & her words r as powerful as ever ๐Ÿ™Œ these guys musta thought they cud outsmart the law but in the end justice caught up w/ 'em ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’ช This whole thing is just insane! I mean, come on, Russia pays these Russian mobsters to kill someone in the US? It's like something out of a movie! And the fact that Alinejad survived and is still speaking out is a total win for her and for women everywhere. 25-year prison sentences are more than fair for Amirov and Omarov - they basically bought their lives with other people's freedom. I'm just so grateful that justice was served, but at the same time, it's heartbreaking to think about Alinejad still living in fear. Her bravery is something we should all be inspired by ๐Ÿ’ซ

just saw this news about the 2 russian nationals gettin a long prison term for tryin to assassinate an iranian dissident livin in the us ๐Ÿคฏ it's crazy how deep the reach of oppressive regimes can be, even in another country ๐ŸŒŽ masih alinejad is a total hero for standin up against the iranian regime on social media, and it's awesome that the judge handed down these harsh sentences as a deterrence ๐Ÿ’ช meanwhile, the fact that 4 iranians are hidin out in iran because they're wanted for their crimes just shows how corrupt and power-hungry the regime is ๐Ÿคฅ

man this is so wild lol i cant believe ppl r willin to get paid 30k to try & kill some1 who just wants to speak out against oppression ๐Ÿคฏ thats straight up crazy. i think its awesome that masih alinejad was able to survive the attempt on her life tho, she's like a total rockstar for standin up to those baddies ๐Ÿ’ช. and yeah its sickening that iran secretly funded this plot & is still helpin ppl evade justice ๐Ÿคฌ. the 25 year prison sentences though? thats def a message from the court to iran that they can't just hire thugs 2 take out dissidents ๐Ÿ˜’. it's all so scary but also super inspiring at the same time, i mean what's gonna stop them next tho? gotta keep an eye on this ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ฅ This case is super scary, can't believe some people would try to kill someone for speaking out against an oppressive regime! $30k might seem like a lot of money but it's nothing compared to the life & freedom they're risking ๐Ÿ’ธ. The fact that Iranians were involved in this plot is just another example of how they'll stop at nothing to silence their critics ๐Ÿคฏ. We need more people like Masih Alinejad who are willing to speak truth to power no matter the cost ๐Ÿ’ช. 25 years is a pretty hefty sentence but I think it's still not enough considering what these guys did ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿคฏ I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one... the fact that the Iranian government secretly funded a plot to assassinate an Iranian dissident living in the US is just mind-blowing. It's like, what kind of game are we playing here? ๐Ÿค‘ And the amount they were willing to spend - over half-a-million dollars! ๐Ÿ’ธ That's like, a small country's GDP or something.

And can we talk about Masih Alinejad for a second? She's been living in constant fear since this attempt on her life and yet she still finds the courage to speak out against injustice. I mean, I've seen some strong women in my time but this woman is something else ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

I'm just so tired of seeing people being intimidated by those who want to silence them. It's like, we need to stand up for each other and demand that our rights be protected ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. The sentences handed down today are a good start, but we need more than that. We need systemic change and accountability from those in power ๐Ÿ’ช.

It's also interesting to note how this case highlights the global connections between organized crime and governments. I mean, who would have thought that the Russian mob was behind this plot? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ It just goes to show that corruption knows no borders.

๐Ÿค” I gotta say, it's wild how far-reaching the Iranian regime's reach is - funding assassination plots in the US? It's like they're trying to silence Alinejad for good ๐Ÿšซ. But you know what's even more messed up? The fact that those responsible are just Russian mobsters who got caught up in the game ๐Ÿคบโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, it's not like Amirov and Omarov were heroes or anything - they're just dudes who did some bad stuff for some extra cash ๐Ÿ’ธ.

It's also kinda crazy how Alinejad's bravery has put her life on the line multiple times ๐Ÿ‘€. I gotta respect that kind of courage, even if it means living with constant fear ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ. But at the same time, it's like, what's being done to protect her? Shouldn't there be some sort of protection in place for people who are fighting against oppression? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this case is a real wake-up call - we need to be more vigilant about those who seek to undermine human rights and safety ๐Ÿ’ก. And Alinejad's story is like, the ultimate example of that ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

๐Ÿ™ I'm so relieved that Masih Alinejad was able to survive the attempted assassination - it's just heartbreaking that someone would try to harm her for doing what she believes in ๐Ÿคฏ. 25 years is a huge prison sentence, but like she said, it's a signal to the Iranian regime that they can't just hire hitmen and expect to get away with it ๐Ÿ’ช.

It's also so concerning that four Iranians are still on the run, believed to be hiding in Iran - it's a really disturbing reminder of how far-reaching this plot was and how hard it is for victims like Alinejad to feel safe ๐Ÿšจ. I can only imagine how terrifying it must have been for her and her husband to live in fear for so long.

The bravery of people like Masih Alinejad is truly inspiring - she's a shining example of someone who is unafraid to speak truth to power, even when it puts her own life at risk ๐Ÿ’•. We need more people like her, and we need to support them every step of the way โค๏ธ.

๐Ÿคฏ just heard about the 25-year prison sentences handed down to the Russian nationals involved in plotting to assassinate Masih Alinejad ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’ช. It's crazy to think about how far-reaching the Iranian regime's influence can be, funding people to hurt innocent activists like her ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿ˜ฑ. On one hand, I'm so glad justice was served and that these guys are finally facing consequences for their heinous crimes ๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ but on the other hand, it's heartbreaking that Alinejad and her husband have had to live in fear since the attempted assassination ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ’”. This case is a stark reminder of the risks we take when speaking out against injustice ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช.
