US Treasury’s Bessent says China has approved TikTok transfer deal

The Fate of TikTok Finally Takes Shape

In a significant development, China has approved the transfer agreement for the popular social media app TikTok, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The move marks an end to nearly two years of uncertainty surrounding the app's future in the US.

Bessent stated that he expects the deal to move forward in the coming weeks and months, following a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. While no further details have been disclosed, Bessent assured that a resolution is on the horizon.

China's Commerce Ministry has released a statement indicating that it will handle any issues related to TikTok with the US properly. A spokesperson for the ministry also emphasized the importance of collaboration between both countries to address any concerns.

TikTok itself has not commented publicly on the development, but the app's fate had been hanging in the balance since the US Congress passed a law in 2024 requiring its Chinese owners to sell the app's US assets by January 2025.

The agreement includes key provisions such as the appointment of board members for TikTok US and the holding of less than 20% of ownership by ByteDance, the app's parent company. Americans will hold six seats on the board, while one seat will be held by a representative from ByteDance.

US Representative John Moolenaar has expressed concerns over the licensing agreement that would allow TikTok to continue operating in the US as part of the deal.

With China's approval in hand, it appears that TikTok's future in the US is finally taking shape. The resolution of this long-standing issue marks a significant development for both countries and will likely have implications for online security and national interests.

Just got some news about TikTok and I gotta say, it's been a wild ride 🤯. I remember when this whole thing started going down, nobody knew what was gonna happen to the app. Now that China's on board with the deal, I think we're good to go 🙌. But I do have some concerns about national security and all that jazz... still waiting to see how it plays out 🤔. One thing's for sure though, this is a big step forward for both countries... fingers crossed it works out! 😊

idk if i fully trust dis deal tho 🤔 ... china just gave tiktok its blessing outta nowhere... how do we know dey ain't gonna use it as a tool 2 spy on us 🕵️‍♂️? also, why did chinese leader xi jinping have 2 meet w/ trump again? what's really goin on behind closed doors? 🤐 and btw, how can tiktok continue operating in the us w/o american ownership if dey r still controlled by chinese owners? seems like a pretty big loophole to me 🤷‍♂️

Ugh I'm so done with all these tech companies getting sold to whoever wants them 🙄... like what happened to Facebook back in the day? Remember when it was just a small little startup that everyone loved? Now look at it, owned by some massive corporation that's got more power than ever. And now TikTok is basically being handed over to the Chinese government - I mean, can you even imagine if this had happened 10 years ago during the whole Edward Snowden thing? We'd all be living in a dystopian nightmare! 🕵️‍♂️ Anyway, I guess it's just another reminder that nothing lasts forever...

I'm still nostalgic about dial-up internet days, remember those? 📱👀 Anyway, I'm glad to see TikTok's fate finally settling down. It feels like an eternity since this whole ordeal started in 2024... what was it, another presidential election? 😊 Now that China has given the green light, fingers crossed it'll all work out smoothly for the app and its users.

The thought of Americans holding six seats on TikTok's board is pretty cool. I mean, who wouldn't want to see some US flair in their feeds? 🤔 But seriously, this whole situation was super nerve-wracking, especially with those concerns over online security... did we really need a law like that? 😅

I'm also curious about what'll happen next – will ByteDance get more involved or can TikTok just chill and continue making memes for us? 🤷‍♂️ Either way, it's a relief the uncertainty is finally lifting. Bring on the TikTok peace! 💖

Ugh, about time! 🙌 I was getting so sick of all the drama surrounding TikTok's future in the US. I mean, who wants to think about social media apps and their politics all day? 😒 It's just going to be a mess if this deal doesn't work out, with all these security concerns and whatnot. And now we know that Americans will have some say in how the app is run... good, I guess 🤔. But still, can't we just have peace and quiet on TikTok? 😴 It's been ages since I've been able to scroll through my For You page without worrying about what's going on behind the scenes.

I'm so relieved this is finally happening 😌. I know some people were worried about TikTok's data privacy and security issues, and it's good that we're getting to the bottom of things. The whole thing with the US Congress law was a bit of a mess, but at least now we know what's going on 🤔. I do hope the licensing agreement works out for everyone involved - I mean, who doesn't love TikTok? 😂 It's been a long and uncertain time, so let's just take it one step at a time and see how things play out 👍.

Man, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole TikTok thing 🤯. I mean, it's crazy that they're finally gonna get their agreement done after all the drama with Trump and China 🤝. But now that it's all sorted out, I wonder if they'll be able to really shake off those US security concerns 😬. And what about John Moolenaar's concerns? Like, is he just trying to stir up some trouble or what? 🙄. Anyway, it's gonna be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming weeks and months 📊. Maybe we'll finally get a better idea of what's really going on behind those TikTok screens 🔍

Ugh, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole situation 🤯. Like, what's next? Are we gonna sell off our entire social media landscape to the highest bidder? 🤑 I mean, I get it, China has approved the deal, but can't they see how this is gonna affect American users and national security? 🚨 It's like, hello, just because you're a powerful country doesn't mean you get to just swoop in and take over our social media platforms. And don't even get me started on ByteDance holding only 20% of the ownership... that's still way too much for my liking 😒. I just hope they don't end up compromising our data and online security for the sake of a quick deal 🤦‍♀️.

🤔 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this news... it feels like we're just moving the pieces on a chessboard without knowing all the strategies yet. Can't help but wonder what's really going on behind the scenes, especially with all those board members being appointed 🤑 and ownership stakes getting reduced 💸. This whole thing is a bit too convenient if you ask me... I'm rooting for transparency so we can understand what's at play here 👀

man i cant believe its been like 2 years since tiktok was all up in arms over us china issues 🤯 i remember when trump first came down on them hard, thought it was gonna be the end of the app in us 🙅‍♂️ but now it seems like china's finally got their act together & we're movin forward 💼 20% ownership limit is a good start, dont wanna have some chinese guy runnin our social media 🤪 plus americans gettin 6 seats on the board? that's like, totally fair 🙌 but idk if i trust tiktok to keep us safe online 🤔

Ugh 🤦‍♂️, I'm not sure if I should be relieved or concerned about TikTok's future in the US 😅. On one hand, it's awesome that the uncertainty is finally over 🙌, but on the other hand, what's the point of having a social media app if you can't have complete freedom to use it without some government and corporate entity breathing down your neck 🤔? I mean, six seats on the board sounds like a decent compromise, but I'm still not sure if it's enough to put my mind at ease 🙃. And what about all the memes and videos that were made with TikTok 🎥... will they ever be lost forever in some digital graveyard?! 😱

🤔 I'm cautiously optimistic about the transfer agreement being finalized between China and the US, it seems like we're finally seeing some progress on the TikTok front 📈. The fact that the Chinese government has given its approval indicates a level of cooperation and compromise from both parties, which is a positive sign for the future 🤝. Of course, there are still some concerns about national security and data protection, but I think the provisions outlined in the agreement are a step in the right direction 📊. The appointment of board members with a balanced ownership structure will likely help mitigate some of the risks associated with TikTok's operations in the US 👥. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out and whether it sets a precedent for future tech deals between the two nations 💻
