Washington DC shooting: Trump calls shooting of national guard members 'an act of terror', vows new scrutiny of immigrants – as it happened

A shooting attack on two members of the West Virginia National Guard outside a Washington DC metro station near the White House has left both victims in critical condition. According to officials, this was an "ambush" by a single gunman, later identified as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who had entered the United States under Operation Allies Welcome, a Biden-era program that aimed to support Afghans put at risk by the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

President Donald Trump called the attack an "act of terror," vowing new scrutiny on immigrants. In a video address, Trump stated that the shooting justified his mass deportation program and the reconsideration of refugee status granted during the Biden administration. He claimed Lakanwal was a foreigner who entered the US from Afghanistan, with Trump accusing the Biden administration of failing to vet him adequately.

The attack has led to increased security measures in Washington DC, with the deployment of 500 additional National Guard troops to patrol the streets, at President Trump's request. The federal court judge that ruled last week that all guard troops should be withdrawn from Washington DC due to probable illegality has not been mentioned by trump

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed Lakanwal's immigration history, stating he was among thousands of unvetted Afghan nationals admitted under Operation Allies Welcome and claimed Democrats who opposed Trump's policies on refugees were "vilifying" the troops.

🚨 this is getting way too real for me... think about it - a single gunman gets into the country without proper vetting, and now we're seeing what kind of security measures need to be put in place 🤯. I'm not saying Trump's right or wrong, but this is a huge red flag for national security. And can we talk about how convenient it is for him to use an 'act of terror' label to justify his deportation program? 🙄. It's like he's trying to stir up fear and control the narrative. I'm all for keeping our country safe, but we need to be smart about it, not reactionary 😒.

I think this is just another example of how we're creating more problems by letting people in without proper vetting 🤷‍♂️. I mean, Trump might be right that some folks aren't doing their due diligence, but does that really justify mass deportations? 🤔 And what about all the good stuff these Afghan nationals brought with them - skills, knowledge, cultural exchange... we're kicking them out over one random shooting incident? 🚫 It's just not worth it. And btw, 500 National Guard troops patrolling the streets? That's like putting more guns on the street instead of trying to prevent these types of attacks from happening in the first place 💡

Ugh man this is so messed up 🤕... 29 years old and already got himself into a crazy situation, I mean what's going through that mind? I can imagine how scary it must've been for those two National Guardsman just chillin' outside the metro station when suddenly BAM! You're in a life or death situation. It's like, come on Rahmanullah, why'd you have to make things so hard for yourself?

And yeah, Trump is all over this like a bad rash 🤢... calling it an "act of terror" and now he wants to crack down even harder on immigrants? That's just sad man, we gotta work together as a country not tear each other apart. 500 more National Guard troops in DC, that's just crazy talk...

Man, this is getting outta hand 🤯... Another senseless shooting, two good people hurt, and now we're being told it's an 'act of terror' 💔? It feels like Trump just saw an opportunity to stir up more drama and whip up fear 😒. And that Operation Allies Welcome program, I don't get why we can't even have a straightforward conversation about vetting these refugees? 🤷‍♂️ It's like they're using this one guy's name as a scapegoat for their own policies 🚫.

And 500 more National Guard troops on the streets? That's just gonna make everyone feel more on edge 😟. I mean, I get it, safety is important, but can't we do better than that? 💡 Trump wants to talk about vetting, but what about the actual vetting process he had in place for refugees? 🤔... It all feels like a big ol' mess 🌪️

I feel bad for this guy Rahmanullah, 29 is like super young to be goin through all that, you know? He made a mistake, but to say he was unvetted and just went off the deep end... I don't think it's fair. Trump's makin' a big deal outta this and it's just gonna lead to more drama. I'm worried about our immigration system, we need to be more open and welcoming, not close-minded and xenophobic 🤷‍♂️. The fact that he got into the country under Operation Allies Welcome, which was meant to help people like him... it's a shame we can't just focus on fixin' the problems rather than tearin' people down 🤕.

🤯 can't believe what's going down rn! so some dude shows up to attack ppl in DC and now trump is all like "we need to vet immigrants better"... like, come on man, didn't you guys vet this guy? 🤷‍♂️ meanwhile, noem is just trying to spin it and make the democrats look bad... newsflash, kristi, we got a whole country to deal with, not just some random attacks. 🚫 also, what's up with all these security measures now? 500 new guards deployed? that's crazy! 💪 i just hope everyone stays safe in DC 👍

What a crazy thing to happen in our country 🤯. I'm so sad to hear that two innocent people got hurt, critical condition no less 😔. You gotta wonder what drives someone to do such a thing... was it just a moment of madness or something deeper? And poor Rahmanullah, he's the one who took the hit for this senseless act 🤕.

It's all so confusing, though - was Trump right to say that Biden let Lakanwal in without proper vetting? Or was that just more politics 🤑? And what about these Operation Allies Welcome folks - were they really that unvetted, like Noem said? I feel bad for the victims' families and loved ones who have to deal with all this trauma 💔.

I'm not sure what's going on in Washington DC right now, but one thing's for sure: we need more compassion and understanding in our country ❤️. We should be looking out for each other, not pointing fingers or blaming the other side 🤝. Let's hope for a better way forward...

omg this is getting crazy 🤯 like what happened to these 2 national guard guys? i feel so bad for them, they just trying to do their job, protecting the country... not a terrorist 🚫 why does trump gotta bring politics into this?! it's all about security and justice, not immigration status or refugees... can't he just let people breathe? 🙅‍♂️

I don’t usually comment but... this attack is really disturbing 🤕. The fact that a single gunman could just walk into a metro station near the White House and start shooting at two National Guard members is just insane 😲. And now President Trump is using it as an excuse to crack down on immigrants, which is not only unfair but also divisive 🚫. I mean, Operation Allies Welcome was set up to help people who were really in danger, not some folks trying to come into the US for the wrong reasons.

It's sad that a tragedy like this has to be used as a tool for political posturing 💔. And what about the victims? They're still lying in critical condition 🤕. We should be focusing on getting them the help they need, not fueling up the rhetoric of fear and hate 😢. And honestly, I'm surprised that there's no more discussion about why we need to strengthen our vetting processes for refugees, rather than just pointing fingers at each other 🙄.

Ugh this is just getting crazy 🤯... another shooting and now it's about politics?! Can't we just focus on supporting these victims? 😔 Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, was attacked by one gunman in an 'ambush' outside the White House. Both victims are in critical condition - our thoughts are with them & their families 💕. I feel so bad for them 🤕. We need to be talking about how we can support these soldiers & their families, not using a tragedy like this to fuel a debate on immigration policies 😞. It's just heartbreaking 🤕.

Ugh, I mean come on, Trump is being super shady here 🤦‍♂️. Like, yes Lakanwal is an Afghan national, but that doesn't mean he should be automatically assumed to be a threat just because of his immigration status. And what's with the "act of terror" label? Wasn't this whole thing an accident? I'm so over how Trump is trying to spin this for his own agenda 🙄. Newsflash, Trump: refugees and immigrants are human beings too, not just security threats.

And can we talk about how he's already linking this attack to the refugee status granted by the Biden admin? That's like blaming the victim here 😒. And what really gets me is that he's being super quiet about the fact that the court judge ruled last week that all guard troops should be withdrawn from DC... did someone tell him to just ignore that? 🙃

Man... this is so messed up 🤕. I'm still trying to process what happened at that metro station in DC. Two National Guard members, just walking around doing their job, and BAM! Gunman comes out of nowhere. It's like, what even is the point of these kinds of programs? You got this guy, Rahmanullah, coming into the country under Operation Allies Welcome, and now he's the one who's carrying out an attack. And Trump's over here acting like this is somehow a result of lax vetting or something... it doesn't add up 🤔.

And can we talk about how Trump is using this to justify his deportation program? Like, that's not even related to what happened at all. It's just another example of him trying to scapegoat people who are already vulnerable. I'm so worried about the safety of our troops and civilians in DC right now. This attack has definitely raised the stakes for security measures in the city 🚨.

🚨 this is crazy what's going on with trump's reaction to this shooting he's using it to push for mass deportation & stricter refugee rules but let's not forget, lakanwal was already in the US under a program meant to help afghans in danger after the us withdrawal from afghanistan. it feels like trump is trying to use this attack as a way to further divide people rather than work towards real solutions to keep americans safe 🤯

😂 Can you believe this guy Rahmanullah was like a super-spy or something 🤥 and managed to evade vetting? I mean, OP Allies Welcome sounds like a fancy name for "we're gonna let anyone in", lol 😅. And now Trump is all like "I told you so" and wants to deport everyone... good luck with that, Mr. Deport-o-matic 🚫💨. It's like he thinks the guy was just walking around Washington DC with a "I'm a threat to America" sticker on his forehead 🤣. And 500 more National Guards to patrol? Like they're gonna catch all these rogue immigrants with their bare hands 👊. This is what happens when you don't vet people properly... or in Trump's case, when you just want an excuse to be mean 😒.

I cant believe what just happened in DC 😱. This shooting attack is absolutely horrific and I feel so bad for the two National Guard members who got hurt 🤕. What's even more disturbing is that the gunman was a 29-year-old Afghan national who entered the US under Operation Allies Welcome, which is supposed to be a program to help refugees like him 🤝.

I think it's super unfair for President Trump to use this incident as an excuse to push his mass deportation program and accuse the Biden admin of not vetting Lakanwal properly 🚫. The fact that he's trying to justify these policies by saying the attack was "an act of terror" is just plain scary 💥.

And what about all the Afghan nationals who entered the US under Operation Allies Welcome, like Lakanwal? Are they supposed to be some kind of security threat now? It's just so not fair 🤷‍♀️. I hope that everyone can stay calm and think clearly in the days ahead 😊.

omg is this guy for real?? Rahmanullah just showed up outta nowhere and starts spraying bullets at our guards? what a joke that it was an ambush lol like he planned it 2 years ago and just held it in 🤯 meanwhile trump is using this to push his agenda again, can't he just keep his mouth shut for once? i mean idk about the refugees but we gotta vet ppl before bringing them into our country, no need 4 drama.
and btw 500 more guards coming 2 washington dc? that's a bit much even 4 me, dont u think?
