Prince Andrew has lost his royal title. The move comes just days before the publication of a posthumous memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who accused Prince Andrew of raping her in 2001 after being trafficked by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The decision means that Prince Andrew will no longer sign off as "Duke of York" or append "KG" – denoting Knight of the Garter – after his name. Other titles will also become inactive, like His Royal Highness (HRH) honorific.
This move comes as a result of Prince Andrew's association with Epstein and the allegations against him. In 2022, Prince Andrew was stripped of most of his titles and removed from royal duties due to his connections to Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
Prince Andrew has denied all allegations made against him by Giuffre. However, he paid millions of dollars to settle a civil sexual assault case with her in 2022. The settlement was widely criticized as being funded by taxpayers' money.
Giuffre's memoir details her time with Prince Andrew and Epstein, including alleged encounters when she was underage. According to the book, Prince Andrew believed sex with Giuffre was his "birthright."
Prince Andrew has a long history of association with Epstein, whom he met in the 1990s. He socialized with Epstein in elite social circles and flew on Epstein's private jet multiple times. This association has led to further scrutiny for Prince Andrew.
In recent years, Prince Andrew has largely withdrawn from public life following intense media scrutiny over various scandals.
