A rare glimpse into the UK's forgotten wildlife was captured recently at Celtic Rewilding in Staffordshire. A European tree frog, once native to England, now resides in a secure enclosure, its future uncertain. Conservationists estimate that this species became extinct in the country by the 16th or 17th century, brought down by habitat loss and over-collection for medicinal purposes.

The UK's pre-industrial past took a devastating toll on many native species, including three frog species set to be reintroduced: agile frogs, moor frogs, and European tree frogs. The European pond turtle is also in the frame for return to Britain, with experts attributing their extinction to human impact, land degradation, and climate breakdown.

This sobering reminder of Britain's ecological downfall serves as a stark warning of the consequences of our actions on the environment. As we strive towards conservation efforts, it's essential that we acknowledge the past and work towards a more sustainable future for these species and many others like them.

🌿 I mean, can you even believe how rare it is to see one of these frogs in person?! They're basically extinct here, and now we've got this one guy living in a secure enclosure... it's wild! 🐸 But seriously, it's crazy to think about how much our past actions have affected the environment. I mean, I know humans can be pretty thoughtless sometimes, but come on! We've gotta learn from our mistakes and try to do better for future generations. It's not just about saving these specific species, it's about preserving our planet as a whole... 🌎

I don’t usually comment but this is seriously sad πŸŒ³πŸ˜”. Like, I know we can't turn back time or anything, but it's wild to think that European tree frogs were actually native to England once upon a time. It's crazy how habitat loss and over-collection can just wipe out an entire species in like, a few hundred years.

I mean, I'm all for conservation efforts and wanting to protect our wildlife, but it feels like we're just scratching the surface of understanding what happened in the past. Like, how did we not know about this stuff until now? And what's being done to prevent it from happening again?

It's a good reminder that we need to be way more mindful of our impact on the environment and make some serious changes to protect our planet and its creatures πŸŒŸπŸ’š

You guys ever think about how they're releasing those European tree frogs in a secure enclosure? Like, what's the real motive here? Are they just trying to save the species or is there something else going on? I mean, we all know the government loves its greenwashing campaigns 🌿. What if this is just a smokescreen for something bigger? Maybe it's not just about conservation, but also about...I don't know, research or something? And what about those three frog species that are set to be reintroduced? Agile frogs and moor frogs too? Sounds like some kind of coordinated effort to me πŸ€”. I'm not saying they're doing anything wrong, but let's keep an open mind here. There's gotta be more to it than just saving the environment...

🐸🌿 I'm kinda surprised they're still talking about European tree frogs being extinct in England by the 16th or 17th century... don't get me wrong, habitat loss is a big deal, but come on, that's like, centuries ago! Anyway, it's great that Celtic Rewilding is working to conserve these species and their habitats. We should totally be doing more like this globally, especially with climate change affecting so many ecosystems already 🌑️. I mean, it's not just about the UK, right? We gotta take a page from our past and learn from the mistakes to make a better future for all wildlife 🐦.

πŸ˜” my heart is breaking thinking about all those native UK wildlife species that got wiped out... like, who does that? 🌿 it's just devastating to think that people used to collect them for medicine and just basically forgot about them afterwards πŸ˜• anyway, i feel so bad for the European tree frog in that enclosure, it's like they're stuck between being 'alive' and 'extinct', ugh... let's do better, guys! 🌟 we need to learn from our past mistakes and work together to bring back these amazing species πŸΈπŸ’š

πŸŒΏπŸ’” just had to share this... can't believe they're even reintroducing frog species 🐸 back into the UK... feels like we've lost so much already πŸ€• what's wrong with our way of life that we need to bring back extinct animals? also, all these climate breakdown & land degradation stuff is super worrying πŸŒͺ️ need to make some changes ASAP πŸ‘

I'm not sure if I totally buy into all this talk about extinction & conservation πŸ€”. Like, let's be real, we've been messing with the environment for centuries, but it seems like only now are we really starting to take notice? I mean, what about all the times people have been rewilding or conservation efforts in the past? Did those just magically go away? It's also kinda interesting that we're only now talking about bringing back extinct species. Is that not a bit... retroactive? And what about the impact of climate change on ecosystems? Shouldn't that be our priority? 🌎

omg this is so heartbreaking 🐸🌿 i mean, can you believe how much harm humans have caused to our wildlife?? it's like, we're just starting to learn about the importance of conservation and already there are so many species that are critically endangered πŸ€• what's even more alarming is that we might be too late for some of these species 😩 but yay to all the conservationists working hard to try and bring back some of our native wildlife! 🌸 let's keep supporting them πŸ’š

I'm not sure I agree with making such a big deal about all this... I mean, have you seen the state of our oceans lately? 🌊 Like, what's the plan to save those? And don't even get me started on the whole ' extinction' thing... it's been going on for centuries, right? πŸ™„ The European tree frog just kinda... existed, and now it's extinct. It's not like we're discovering some new species or anything (although, I do think it'd be cool to see one in person 😊). We should be focusing on the bigger picture here. Like, what about all the amazing advancements being made in biotech? πŸ€– Can't we just harness that energy to help our planet instead of dwelling on what's been lost? πŸ™ƒ

🌿🐸 oh man, can you believe how much damage humans did to the UK's wildlife?! 🀯 I mean, they had European tree frogs living there and then just POOF! They're gone? It's crazy how habitat loss and over-hunting (medicinal purposes, ugh!) led to their extinction. And now we're trying to bring back three more frog species... it's like, what took us so long?! πŸ€” We need to learn from the past and be more responsible with our environment, you know? It's not just about conservation efforts, but also about accepting what went wrong and moving forward in a better direction. 🌟

OMG this is so sad 🐸😒 I mean, can you believe they're almost gone? Like, what's next? Losing all our wildlife?! 🌳 It's crazy to think that people were collecting frogs for medicine in the 16th century... like, what were we thinking?! πŸ˜‚ But seriously, it's not just about these specific species, it's about the impact of humans on the environment. We need to be more careful and responsible with our actions. I mean, conservation efforts are great and all, but we can't just sit back and expect everything to fix itself. We need to make some real changes, like reducing our carbon footprint and protecting natural habitats. It's not too late, though... let's do this! 🌟

omg this is such sad news πŸΈπŸ˜” but at the same time super inspiring to see people working hard to bring back extinct species 🌟 i mean what's even more amazing is that we can learn from our past mistakes and try to do better for the environment 🌎 it's like, we know what went wrong with these animals in the first place so now we just need to make sure we don't mess things up again 🀞 gotta keep those conservation efforts going and support organizations working tirelessly to protect our wildlife πŸΎπŸ’š

man i'm so sad about this european tree frog i mean its been extinct in england for centuries but to know its still alive somewhere is crazy 🀯. it just goes to show how much humans have affected the environment and its not good we gotta learn from the past and try to be more sustainable like what they're doing with these frogs 🌿. if we don't take care of our planet who will? 🌎

πŸŒΏπŸ’š I'm so bummed to hear about the European tree frog being kept in an enclosure πŸ€•. It's crazy to think they were once native to England, but habitat loss and over-collection took their toll. And now we're facing climate breakdown and land degradation... it's like we're playing a never-ending game of catch-up 😩.

We need to learn from the past and be more mindful of our impact on the environment 🌸. Reintroducing native species is a great idea, but let's also focus on preserving habitats and reducing our carbon footprint πŸ’š. It's all about finding that balance between progress and conservation 🌿πŸ’ͺ.

I'm still in awe of how humans can just push out an entire species from their own backyard 🌿😱 like, what happened to those frogs? I mean, we're always talking about conservation efforts now, but do we really remember that our ancestors were the ones responsible for making them extinct? It's crazy to think that we've lost so much of our natural heritage and it's going to take a lot of work to get some of these species back 🌟. I'm all for learning from the past and working towards a more sustainable future, but it's also kinda sad to see what we've done to our environment ⚠️.

I'm thinking, what's the government doing to address this ecological downfall? It's one thing to acknowledge the problem but how are they planning to bring back extinct species? Is it just a PR stunt or actual conservation efforts? I mean, if we're gonna reintroduce these species, shouldn't we also be talking about reviving old habitats and reversing land degradation? πŸ€”

And let's not forget, this is all happening during the climate crisis. What's the plan for mitigating that impact on our environment? Are we just going to sit back and wait for nature to recover or are we gonna take action? I'd love to see some real commitment from policymakers here... πŸ’‘

I'm literally gutted to think about those poor European tree frogs 🐸😒. I mean, can you even imagine living in England without them?! 🀯 It's wild (no pun intended) that they've been extinct here since the 16th century. The thought of all those habitats being destroyed and people just taking whatever they wanted for themselves... it's heartbreaking. And now we're trying to bring back these species, but it's not like we can just wave a magic wand and make everything okay again πŸ™. I think we need to be more realistic about our impact on the environment and take some real responsibility for what we've done. It's time to get serious about conservation and make sure we don't repeat the same mistakes that led to these species' extinction in the first place πŸ’š.

πŸŒΏπŸ˜• I'm glad to see conservationists working hard to save endangered species like the European tree frog... but 16th century? That's crazy! Humans have been messing with nature since forever, it feels like we're just now realizing the damage πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. And what's with all these reintroduction programs? Are they gonna make a difference or just be another failed experiment? I'm all for trying to save our planet, but we need to be realistic about how hard it is to bring back extinct species... it's like thinking you can put a Band-Aid on a gunshot wound πŸ’‰.
