A rare glimpse into the UK's forgotten wildlife was captured recently at Celtic Rewilding in Staffordshire. A European tree frog, once native to England, now resides in a secure enclosure, its future uncertain. Conservationists estimate that this species became extinct in the country by the 16th or 17th century, brought down by habitat loss and over-collection for medicinal purposes.

The UK's pre-industrial past took a devastating toll on many native species, including three frog species set to be reintroduced: agile frogs, moor frogs, and European tree frogs. The European pond turtle is also in the frame for return to Britain, with experts attributing their extinction to human impact, land degradation, and climate breakdown.

This sobering reminder of Britain's ecological downfall serves as a stark warning of the consequences of our actions on the environment. I'm not sure if I totally buy into all this talk about extinction & conservation 🤔.
