49ers mourn death of franchise icon, NFL MVP John Brodie

49ers Legend John Brodie Passes Away at 90

The San Francisco 49ers organization has announced the passing of their iconic franchise icon, John Brodie, who was just 90 years old. A two-time Pro Bowl selection and NFL MVP winner in 1970, Brodie left an indelible mark on the franchise's history.

Brodie's remarkable career with the 49ers spanned over a decade, from 1957 to 1973, where he earned his place as one of the greatest quarterbacks in franchise history. During his playing days, Brodie consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, and his commitment to his teammates was unwavering.

In addition to his impressive football career, Brodie also ventured into broadcasting after retiring from the sport. However, a stroke in 2000 left him unable to continue his broadcasting career.

Brodie's incredible legacy is still felt today, as the team continues to honor his memory with retired jersey number 12. The 49ers organization has expressed their deepest condolences to Brodie's wife, Sue, and the entire Brodie family.

Many former teammates and colleagues of Brodie have spoken highly of him in recent years, including Jerry Mertens, a cornerback for the 49ers from 1958 to 1965. "He was a great guy, a super competitor," Mertens said. "I don't care what it was โ€” football, cards, golf โ€” he loved all things competitive."

In addition to his football career, Brodie also pursued a passion for professional golf, competing on the Senior PGA Tour from 1985 to 1998.

As news of Brodie's passing spreads throughout the sports world, fans and former teammates alike are taking time to reflect on the lasting impact he had on the San Francisco 49ers organization.

man, 90 is old for a football player... but john brodie was like a legend in his prime, you know? he played with heart and led by example ๐Ÿ™Œ. i love how they retired jersey #12 in his honor, it's so cool to see teams showing respect to their former players ๐Ÿ’•. and can u believe he had another passion besides football? professional golf! brodie was like a true athlete, always pushing himself to be the best ๐Ÿ”ฅ. r.i.p john brodie ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿค” I'm not surprised that it took them this long to mention that Brodie was a two-time Pro Bowl selection ๐Ÿˆ... I mean, come on, it's basic info! Anyway, back to his legacy... while 12 is definitely a great number for him, I think they should've retired the whole 'quarterback' jersey slot instead. I mean, he was basically the face of the franchise for decades ๐Ÿ˜‚. And yeah, the guy loved competition - who didn't? But seriously, have you seen that interview with Jerry Mertens? "He loved all things competitive" is so... bland ๐Ÿ™„. How about some color?

man I'm so sad to hear about john brodie ๐Ÿค•...he was like a legend in our city for so long and his legacy is still felt today โค๏ธ...I remember watching him play as a kid and my dad would always talk about how amazing he was on the field ๐Ÿˆ...and now that he's gone, it feels like a part of our history has been lost ๐Ÿ˜”...but at the same time I'm so grateful to have grown up in a city with such iconic figures like brodie and joe montana ๐ŸŒ‰...they're gonna be deeply missed but their memory will live on through us ๐Ÿ‘

just heard about john brodie's passing, feels like a tragedy ๐Ÿค• his legacy lives on thru the 49ers org tho, its awesome theyre still honoring him with retired jersey no 12 ๐Ÿ˜Š i mean, two time pro bowl selection and nfl mvp winner in 1970? thats some impressive credentials ๐Ÿ’ช guess all those years of golf and cards didnt slow him down either ๐ŸŒ๏ธ๐Ÿƒ condolences to his wife sue and the brodie family from everyone at 49ers nation ๐Ÿ‘‹

just read about john brodie... thinking about legacy, how it shapes us, what we leave behind ๐Ÿคฏ...brodie's life was full of passion & dedication, football, broadcasting, golf...it's crazy to think one person could excel in so many areas ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ“บ๐ŸŒ๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ...but at the same time, that's what makes his story special - he didn't just do one thing, he pursued multiple passions with heart ๐Ÿ’–...i guess that's something we can all learn from, finding our own balance & pursuing our own dreams ๐ŸŒŸ

"A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new." ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜Š The way John Brodie lived life, both on and off the field, was full of adventure and determination. He may have faced setbacks, like his stroke in 2000, but he always found a way to come back stronger. What's truly inspiring about Brodie is that he left an indelible mark on two different worlds: football and golf.

Wow ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Just saw that John Brodie passed away at 90 ๐Ÿคฏ What an incredible legacy! I mean, two-time Pro Bowl selection is no joke ๐Ÿ’ช And NFL MVP winner in 1970? That's insane! ๐Ÿคฏ Always thought he was so humble and down-to-earth, given his accomplishments. Glad to see the 49ers organization honoring him with that retired jersey number 12 โค๏ธ Rest in peace, John Brodie ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ’” Man, we're losing so much good people these days... John Brodie's passing is a reminder that our time on this earth is limited ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. We gotta cherish every moment with our loved ones and make the most of our time โฐ. His legacy will live on through his family, friends, and fans who knew him - let's take a page from his book and be more supportive of each other during tough times ๐Ÿค. And remember, it's not about us being perfect, but about being there for those around us โค๏ธ.

man that's crazy bro ๐Ÿคฏ John Brodie was like a legend on the field all those years ago... I remember hearing my dad talk about him when I was younger, how he was this super cool quarterback who just dominated games โšฝ๏ธ his leadership skills were top notch and it's no surprise why the 49ers organization is still honoring his legacy today ๐Ÿ™

I feel bad for his wife Sue and the entire Brodie family, 90 is a big age to lose someone so special ๐Ÿ’” But at the same time, he lived an amazing life, from playing in the NFL to competing on the golf course ๐ŸŒณ it's inspiring to see how he stayed active and competitive even after retirement

I'm definitely gonna have to check out some old footage of John Brodie playing, I've heard so many good things about him ๐Ÿ˜Š

Man... just heard about John Brodie passin' away ๐Ÿค•. That dude was a legend on and off the field ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ’ช. I remember watchin' old 49ers games with my dad when I was a kid, and he'd always talk about how much respect he had for Brodie's leadership on the team ๐Ÿ’ฌ. Even though his football career is over, it sounds like he left a mark on a lot of people's lives ๐ŸŒŸ. It's not often you hear about guys who are still remembered as much for their character off the field as they are for their accomplishments on it ๐Ÿ’•. RIP John Brodie ๐Ÿ‘

sadly passed away at such a young age ๐Ÿค•. 90 yrs old is nothing but his legacy lives on thru all the ppl who knew him like jerry mertens ๐Ÿ‘. golf and cards were more than just hobbies for him, they showed how competitive he was ๐Ÿ˜‚. retired jersey number 12 is a nice touch though ๐Ÿ’š. u cant put a price on a guy who loved competition that much ๐Ÿค‘. time to remember the man behind the gridiron legend ๐Ÿ‘
