Angel Reese Stands by Gesture Directed at Caitlin Clark After LSU Wins National Title

Angel Reese, star player for LSU, defended her gesture aimed at Iowa Hawkeyes' Caitlin Clark during the Tigers' first NCAA women's basketball national championship victory on Sunday. The gesture, popularized by WWE star John Cena to mean "you can't see me," was interpreted as a reference to Clark's newly acquired championship ring.

Reese said she doesn't take disrespect lightly and called out a double standard after being "unapologetically" her opponent. In a press conference after the victory, Reese referenced the difference in reaction she received as compared to Clark's similar gesture earlier in the tournament.

Reese stated that throughout the season, she was criticized for who she was, and she didn't fit the narrative. She said, "All year, I was critiqued for who I was. I don’t fit the narrative." Reese added that when other people do it, and y'all don't say nothing, but when she does it, she's under fire.

The gesture has sparked much debate on social media, with some criticizing Reese while others have defended her actions. Sports journalist Jose de Jesus Ortiz called Reese's actions "classless," while former ESPN host Keith Olbermann called Reese an "idiot" for the gesture.

However, not everyone shares this sentiment. Former Washington Wizards player Etan Thomas wrote: “Hold on now!!!! It was cute when Caitlin Clark did it. Y'all didn’t have any issues with it at all. So don’t be all outraged and talking about class and sportsmanship when Angel Reese does the same thing."

Reese's gesture has also been defended by ESPN's Holly Rowe, who wrote: “People hating on Angel Reese or Caitlin Clark. Stop. Unapologetically confident young women should be celebrated NOT hated. Get used to it."

LSU head coach Kim Mulkey said she had "no clue" about what transpired at the game.

Reese has averaged 23.0 points and 15.4 rebounds in her first season with LSU after transferring from Maryland, which some say is due to her unapologetic attitude throughout the season.

🤷‍♀️ can you believe the drama that's going on in the women's basketball world? so angel reese does a gesture at caitlin clark and suddenly she's the villain? like, hello, someone else did the same thing and it was cool? 🙄 people need to chill. it's just a game, not a royal family feud. and btw, if anyone deserves an "idiot" label, it's the ones who think reese's gesture was classless 👀.

omg I'm so here for Angel Reese right now she's literally standing up for herself and owning it 🙌💁‍♀️ like can't believe people are hating on her for being confident and unapologetic? newsflash: we should be celebrating women who aren't afraid to speak their minds and show some sass 😂 and btw, if John Cena is cool with the gesture, then so am I 👊 and honestly, it's kinda rich that people are calling out Reese for doing something that Clark did earlier in the tournament 🤔 double standard much?

Wow! 😂 Interesting how people can go from being all praise-y for Caitlin Clark doing the same thing to suddenly become salty when Angel Reese does it. Like, if you're gonna hater on someone, be consistent 🤷‍♀️. And btw, I think Angel's statement about not fitting into a certain narrative is SO relatable 🙌.

OMG u guys i cant even believe wat happened sunday!!! Angel Reese made dis super iconic gesture directed at Caitlin Clark during da game & now she's getting all sorts of hate online 🤦‍♀️... like seriously though, if people werent mad at Caitlin 4 doin da same thing, why r they so extra on Angel? I mean, Angel just called out da double standard & told her critics to stop being so salty 🍟. And let's be real, its not even like she meant to disrespect Caitlin... she was just tryna have fun & make a point about people judging her based on who she is 😂. Anyway, i think its super cool dat Angel Reese is owning her confidence & individuality 💁‍♀️💖

🤷‍♀️ Angel Reese did that gesture thingy 🙄 and people are still talking about it... I mean, Caitlin Clark was doing the same thing too lol 👀 but then everyone gets mad at Angel when she does it? 🤔 Like, what's good? If you're gonna do it, do it right? 💁‍♀️ And btw, Reese is just stating facts 😒 like how she's been criticized for who she is all season. Not trying to be salty or anything... just saying if everyone else can get away with it, why not her? 🤷‍♂️

omg I'm still trying to understand the drama 🤷‍♀️ what's up with everyone being so salty about Angel Reese's gesture tho? 🙄 like she was just having fun and poking fun at Caitlin Clark, who also did it earlier in the tournament... 🤔 shouldn't we be celebrating these strong women instead of tearing each other down? 💁‍♀️ I think Reese was trying to say that she wasn't surprised by Clark getting a championship ring and was basically saying "same thing, girl" but then people got all upset with her for it 😒 like what's not to love about some good old-fashioned trash talk? 🤣

Ugh, can we talk about how the forum is being all extra again? 🙄 I mean, what's up with people needing to call out Angel Reese for a gesture that was kinda cute and didn't even seem like it was meant as anything bad. It's just like when WWE John Cena does that thing and everyone gets hyped - why do we have to turn it into an issue?

And can we also talk about how hypocritical some people are? Like, if Caitlin Clark did the same gesture and nobody said anything, then why is Angel Reese getting roasted for doing the same thing? It's just not fair. 🤷‍♀️ And honestly, it feels like everyone's just trying to stir up drama and get clicks.

Anyway, back to LSU winning the national title - that's awesome, I guess. But can we please focus on more important things than who said what about a gesture? It's getting old. 😒

idk why ppl r so mad at Angel Reese 😒, she just poked fun at Caitlin Clark's ring & everyone got all worked up 🤔... its not like she was being rude or hurtful, she was just having a lil joke 💁‍♀️... people need to chill out & stop taking herself too seriously 🙄... Reese is just being herself, confident & unapologetic, which is what ppl love about her 👏... if others do it, no big deal, but when she does, suddenly shes "classless" 🤷‍♀️? no thanks 🚫

omg i was watching that game and i gotta say i loved angel reese's confidence 💁‍♀️!!! she wasnt afraid to speak up and defend herself when people were critiquing her the whole year 🙅‍♀️ for who she is. i feel like some ppl are being super hypocrite on social media, all mad at her for doing something clark did too... "you can't see me" 💁‍♀️ indeed!!! and honestly, etan thomas said it best - when we defend ourselves and speak up, we're not being classless or sporty, we're just being confident women 🌟!

omg, can u believe Angel Reese's clap back at all those people who thought she was being rude? 🤣 i mean, she straight up said that if they're gonna criticize her for doing something they've done before, then they should just be consistent with it. and honestly, i think it's kinda cute when players are unapologetically themselves, especially on the court! 💁‍♀️🏀 like, who doesn't love a good dose of confidence? 🙌 i'm so here for Reese's attitude and I think she's totally justified in defending herself. and btw, who's calling out the hypocrisy of some people who are mad at her but not at Caitlin Clark when they did the same thing earlier on?? 🤔 it's just basic common sense, right? 🙄

I gotta say... Angel Reese just stood up for herself 🤷‍♀️ and it's kinda refreshing! I mean, we all know she's been under fire this season, but for once, someone actually called out the hypocrisy 🔥. She wasn't afraid to be herself on that court and now people are trying to spin it as a negative? Come on... if it was good enough for John Cena 🤸‍♂️, it's good enough for Reese! The fact that some ppl (like Jose de Jesus Ortiz 😒) are still trying to shame her is just wild. I think we're gonna see more of this confident, unapologetic energy in sports and honestly, I'm here for it 💪.

Ugh, can we talk about how weird this whole situation is? 🤔 Like, I get it, Caitlin Clark's ring is hot stuff and Angel Reese was trying to shade her, but honestly, it felt like a major double standard. We're supposed to be celebrating women's empowerment and all that, but whenever one of them does something a little cheeky, suddenly everyone's got an opinion? 🙄

I mean, I'm with Reese on this - if we don't call out the hypocrisy when it happens, then what's the point? And can we please just acknowledge that her "you can't see me" gesture was actually kinda adorable? 😊 It's all about context and perspective. If Clark had done it earlier in the season, no one would've said a peep. But now that Reese did it... suddenly she's classless or an idiot? Give me a break! 🙄

omg u wont believe wat angie reese did wen they won dat national title 🏆💪 she gestured at caitlin clark like wwe john cena doz "u cant see me" but ppl r goin nuts!! 🤯 its like wat's da diff? she just said she dont take disrespect lightly & now every1s all up in arms 😒 espn's holly rowe tho & former player etan thomas got her back 💕 saying we shouldnt hate on her 4 bein confident & unapologetic 🤷‍♀️ its funny cuz everyone was so harsh on her 4 who she iz but now dat caitlin clark did da same ting, suddenly everybodyz a sportsmanship expert 😂 anyway angie just won her first natty with lsu & shes killin it 🚀

🤦‍♀️ that's so cool that Angel Reese stood up for herself like that 🙌 but idk how ppl r still mad about it, like what did she do wrong? 🤷‍♀️ Reese just called out the double standard and I'm here for it 💁‍♀️ also, yall got a problem with her being confident? 🤑 Caitlin Clark should've owned that ring 1st lol 🏆

🙄 I mean, come on... people need to chill out 🤯! Angel Reese's gesture at Caitlin Clark was just a funny play on words 😂. It's not like she actually said anything bad about Clark or her team. And let's be real, Clark did the same thing earlier in the tournament and nobody had an issue with it 🙅‍♀️. It's all about perception and people being triggered 🤪. Reese is just confident and owning her moments 💁‍♀️, and we should be supporting that attitude, not tearing her down 😒. I mean, what would be next? Are we gonna cancel everyone who's ever done the "you can't see me" gesture in sports or WWE or whatever 🤷‍♂️? Give Reese a break and let her enjoy her national championship win 💫.

🤷‍♀️ come on guys, Reese was low-key referencing how people were hating on her for being herself all season 🙄 Clark did it 1st & didn't get roasted 🤔 and now people are acting like Reese is some kinda jerk 💁‍♀️. give the girl a break 😎

I'm totally not sure why everyone's all bent outta shape about this... I mean, Angel Reese was just showing some spirit on the court! 🤷‍♀️ But at the same time, I think she should've thought twice before doing that gesture, you know? 😏 It was kinda like, a big middle finger to Caitlin Clark and her team. And yeah, it's not cool when people criticize Angel for being herself, but on the other hand, maybe she just wasn't considerate of how others might feel... idk, it's all super confusing! 🤯

Ugh, I'm so frustrated with all these people who think Angel Reese was out of line 🤯. Like, what's wrong with pointing out the double standard? If it's okay for Caitlin Clark to do that same gesture and everyone just ignores it, then why is Reese getting roasted for doing the same thing? It's not like she was trying to be aggressive or rude, she was just standing up for herself 🙅‍♀️. And can we please stop making excuses for people who think they're above criticism? "She doesn't fit the narrative"... excuse me?! Reese has worked hard and earned her place on that court, so why should she have to fit someone else's idea of what it means to be a good player? 🤷‍♀️

🤣 OMG, Caitlin Clark's ring got a side eye from Angel Reese 🤷‍♀️, but now people are turning up the heat on Reese for doing the same thing 😂. I mean, come on folks, if you're gonna throw shade, at least be consistent, right? 🙄 All season long, people were hating on Reese for who she was, and then when she does the exact same thing to Clark, suddenly it's all about "class" and "sportsmanship"? 🤷‍♀️ Give me a break! 💁‍♀️ It's all good, though, because Reese is owning her moments, and if you can't handle that, then just stay quiet 😎.
