New York judge told Trump lawyers to block media from broadcasting his arraignment on live TV, citing concerns over a "circus-like atmosphere".
Donald Trump's attorneys have opposed a request by media outlets to broadcast his arraignment on Tuesday. The lawyers argued that the event would create an unpleasant atmosphere and pose unique security concerns.
"We submit that the media request should be denied because it will create a circus-like atmosphere at the arraignment, raise unique security concerns, and is inconsistent with President Trumpβs presumption of innocence," they said in a letter to New York Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchant.
Trump's attorneys also claimed that any video or photography of the proceedings would only heighten these serious security concerns. A similar request for audio-video broadcasting was made for the 2021 arraignment in the tax fraud case against Trump Organization and its CFO Allen Weisselberg, but the judge allowed a limited number of still photographs to be taken.
The Manhattan District Attorney's office responded that it would "be a defensible exercise of the Courtβs discretion" to exclude or restrict videography, photography, and radio coverage. However, they noted that there "does not appear to be a categorical prohibition on cameras during an arraignment" under existing New York statutes and case law.
CNN is one of the outlets requesting camera access for Tuesday's arraignment. The judge is expected to make a decision soon on whether the media will be allowed to broadcast Trump's arraignment live on TV.
