At least 20 dead after magnitude-6.3 earthquake hits Afghanistan

At least 20 people have died and hundreds more injured in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan on Monday, according to local authorities. The magnitude-6.3 quake hit near Mazar-e-Sharif, one of the country's largest cities with a population of over half a million residents.

As rescue efforts continue, officials warned that the death toll is likely to rise, and the full extent of the damage may take time to be fully assessed. Provincial officials had initially reported casualties were likely to rise as rescue teams worked to reach affected areas.

The quake's impact was exacerbated by the fact that many buildings in Mazar-e-Sharif are not earthquake-resistant, leaving residents vulnerable to collapse. The country's rugged terrain and proximity to several major fault lines also make it prone to earthquakes, according to experts.

As the full extent of the devastation becomes clear, the international community is likely to provide assistance to those affected by this disaster. Afghanistan is currently facing significant humanitarian challenges, including a severe economic crisis and ongoing conflict, making the response to this disaster even more critical.

The latest quake comes after another major earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan last month, killing over 1,100 people in the rural areas where many homes were made of mud and timber.

πŸ˜” Just reading about this devastating earthquake in northern Afghanistan is breaking my heart... 20+ deaths and hundreds more injured? πŸ€• My thoughts are with the people of Mazar-e-Sharif right now. The fact that so many buildings aren't designed to withstand earthquakes makes it even worse, you know? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ It's just another tragedy in a country already dealing with so much. And to think, this is happening on top of everything else they're going through - economic crisis and conflict... πŸŒͺ️ I'm worried about the response times and if it's enough to make a difference. The international community has to come together to help those affected... we can't just sit back and watch 😒

I mean, 20+ dead is already too much for any country to handle, and with hundreds more injured... it just gets worse πŸ’”. I'm not surprised tho, earthquake-prone areas like that one are always at risk 😬. The fact that many buildings aren't even designed to withstand earthquakes is really concerning πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. And on top of all this, Afghanistan's already dealing with economic and conflict issues... it's just a lot for the country to handle right now πŸ’ΈπŸ˜©. We should be keeping an eye out for any potential assistance from the international community πŸŒŽπŸ’•

πŸ˜” it's just so heartbreaking to hear about another devastating earthquake hitting a country that's already struggling with so much. the thought of hundreds more injured & at least 20 lives lost is just too much πŸ€• i can only imagine how scared those people must be, wandering through rubble looking for loved ones or family members. and to think that many buildings in mazar-e-sharif aren't even earthquake-resistant? it's like the universe just isn't giving afghanistan a break right now πŸŒͺ️ anyway, i hope all the rescue efforts can bring some solace & aid to those affected, 'cause we need more people to come together & help each other out in these tough times πŸ’•

can't believe what's happening in afghanistan πŸ€• this is just devastating ... like, the fact that there are so many buildings that aren't even built to withstand an earthquake and now thousands are dead or injured... it's just heartbreaking πŸ˜” and on top of all that, they're dealing with so much more than just this disaster - economic crisis and war going on too... it's like one thing after another 🀯 they really need some serious help and support from the world right now πŸ’–

πŸ€•πŸ˜ž Man, it's just so sad what's happening in Afghanistan right now. I keep thinking about all those innocent ppl who lost their lives & are injured in this quake πŸŒŠπŸ’” The fact that they're struggling with an economic crisis & conflict on top of this disaster is just devastating 😩. It's like, can't we do better to help each other out when tragedy strikes? 🀝 I'm hoping the international community steps up to provide aid & support to those in need πŸ’•. We gotta be there for each other, you know? 🌎

Dude, have you ever been to a really cool thrift store and found these super weird old board games? Like, they're all dusty and stuff, but still somehow work like magic. I was browsing through one last weekend and stumbled upon this one game that looked like it belonged in ancient Egypt or something . Anyway, what's with Afghanistan always getting hit by earthquakes? 🀯 I mean, I get that the place is literally on top of a giant fault line, but can't they just...I don't know, move to a different continent or something? πŸ˜‚ Just kidding, kinda. On a more serious note, it's crazy to think about how many people are affected by this disaster. 🀝
