Ben Stiller reflects on the ‘dark underside’ of Hollywood fame

Ben Stiller, 59, has been reflecting on the darker side of fame after growing up in a family of Hollywood stars. The 'Zoolander' star shared his thoughts with Howard Stern about his childhood, revealing that witnessing the stress and effects on relationships firsthand made him question whether he wanted to pursue a career in show business.

Stiller's parents, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, were beloved comedy legends who went on to become sitcom regulars. However, their success offered Stiller an unfiltered look at the highs and lows of Hollywood life as a child. His new documentary 'Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost' delves into his parents' partnership and how it shaped his own sense of humor and ambition.

When asked about the toughest part of being a child in the public eye, Stiller acknowledged that seeing the negative effects of fame on people's lives made him appreciate its importance even more. "Growing up around it — we talk about all those things I saw with my parents — you actually, as a kid, see the dark underside of it," he said.

Despite witnessing these struggles firsthand, Stiller never doubted his passion for show business and has since become one of Hollywood's most successful actors and filmmakers. However, there was one decision that still haunts him – cutting his daughter Ella out of his 2013 film 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty', which he both directed and starred in.

For Stiller, this decision carries more weight than just a creative choice, as it relates to his own issues with perfectionism and obsession with his work. He admitted that cutting his daughter out was probably the worst decision he's ever made, but Ella has since understood why it happened creatively.

Stiller's documentary provides an intimate look at his parents' journey in comedy and how their partnership helped shape his career. The actor seems to be reflecting on both his family legacy and his own successes with a newfound appreciation for the importance of relationships and family outside of the spotlight.

I feel bad for Ben Stiller cutting his daughter out from that film 🤕, I mean its like, you're her dad and you get to choose her or not, right? But at the same time, I can see how that decision would be super tough for him especially with perfectionism being a major part of his life. His parents' partnership is actually really inspiring, I love how they supported each other in comedy 🤝, it's like they were two peas in a pod. It's good to hear Ben reflecting on the importance of relationships outside of the spotlight, that's something we can all relate to 😊.

I'm low-key impressed by Ben Stiller's new docu, it's crazy he was questioning fame at such a young age 🤯. I mean, can you even imagine growing up in that bubble? His parents were hilarious, but also super high-strung, I bet it was tough to navigate all the drama as a kid 🎬. But for real, cutting Ella out of that movie is a major regret, I wouldn't wish that on anyone 😔. It's great he's reflecting on his childhood and family legacy now though - maybe this doc will help him find some closure? 💕

I totally get why Ben Stiller would wanna share this docu, especially since it's about his parents & their hilarious chemistry. I mean, who wouldn't wanna see a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of legends like Jerry & Anne Stiller? 😊 But what really got me is when he talks about how seeing the darker side of fame as a kid made him even more passionate about doing his own thing. It's so true! Sometimes you need to experience the good & bad sides before you can truly appreciate what's important. 🤯 I'm all for Ben sharing this side of himself & his family, it's like he's giving us a big ol' hug from the inside out 💕

awww 🤗, can you even believe Ben Stiller is sharing all this from behind the scenes? I mean, growing up in Hollywood, witnessing the highs & lows must've been super tough on him as a kid 🤕. But at the same time, it's amazing that he went on to become one of the most successful actors/filmmakers out there 💥! And I love how he's speaking about his daughter Ella now - cutting her out of 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' must've been a hard choice for him, but I'm so glad they're cool again 🤗. Ben's documentary sounds like it's gonna be super insightful into the Stiller family legacy & how it shaped his career 💕!

I can relate to Ben Stiller's thoughts about growing up in the public eye 🤯. It sounds like his experience watching his parents navigate the highs and lows of Hollywood took a toll on him, especially when it came to his own kids 🙏. I mean, who hasn't felt pressure to keep their personal life separate from their work? But at the same time, it's not always easy to balance creative passion with family relationships ❤️. It's interesting that he's reflecting on this now and trying to make amends in a way that works for everyone involved 🤞. I hope his daughter Ella is doing okay after being left out of that film 😔.

I'm just waiting for Ben Stiller to write a book about all the mistakes he's gonna make next 😒📚. I mean, come on, cutting your own daughter out of a film? That's some messed up stuff right there. And don't even get me started on how weird it is that he thinks his perfectionism and work obsession are legit reasons for making such a drastic decision 🤯. Give me a break, dude. It's just Hollywood drama as usual. I'm sure it's all water under the bridge now, but still... some people just need to grow up (or at least, their parents do) 💔

🤔 I think what really stands out here is Ben's realization that fame isn't all glamour and fun, but also has its darker side 🌑. Growing up in a household where everyone was under the microscope, he learned to appreciate the importance of relationships and family outside of the spotlight 💕. It's like, when you're constantly in the public eye, it's easy to lose sight of what really matters 📺. But Ben's story shows us that even with all the stress and pressure, we can still find our way back to what truly makes us happy ❤️.

omg, ben stiller is literally the ultimate example of "do what you love" but only if you're willing to sacrifice your personal life 🤷‍♂️. i mean, who needs their kid in a movie when you've got a reputation to uphold? his documentary is like, super relatable tbh... except for the part where he's basically admitting that being famous is all about playing with people's emotions 🎬💔. anyway, i guess it's great that he's reflecting on his childhood and trying to make amends with his daughter? fingers crossed that his next project doesn't involve cutting anyone else out 🤞

🤔 I feel bad for Ben Stiller, you know? Growing up as the kid of two famous comedy legends must've been tough, especially seeing the stress it puts on people's relationships. It's like, you get this idea that fame is all glamour and fun, but sometimes it's just a lot of pressure and drama 🤯. I can see why he'd be hesitant to pursue show business after witnessing all that as a kid. But at the same time, it's cool that he found his passion and went on to have such an amazing career 💪. The part about cutting his daughter out of the movie though... 😔 that must've been super tough for him. It just goes to show how hard it can be to balance work and family life when you're in the public eye 🌟.

I'm low-key impressed by Ben Stiller's honesty about cutting his daughter out of that movie 🤔. I mean, as much as he loves his work, it's clear that his perfectionism went too far this time. And let's be real, who wouldn't want their kid to appear in a film? It's not like it's gonna hurt them for the rest of their life 💁‍♀️. Maybe this doc is more than just a family drama – maybe it's also a cautionary tale about the dangers of putting work above all else 🚫. Stiller seems to be learning from his mistakes, and that's what makes me curious to watch this doc 😊.

I feel so bad for Ben Stiller, growin' up in that crazy Hollywood fam 🤯🎬 He saw firsthand how fame can take a toll on people's lives, but he still pursued his dreams and killed it! 🙌 I mean, who wouldn't wanna be 'Zoolander' 😂? But it's awesome that he's now reflectin' on his childhood and appreciatin' the importance of relationships & family outside the spotlight ❤️. That doco sounds so emotional, I need to watch it ASAP! 💥 #FamousFamDrama #ChildhoodRegrets #FamilyFirst

🤔 I think its super interesting that Ben Stiller is reflecting on the dark side of fame after growing up in a Hollywood household 🎬. His parents were like, total legends in comedy land, but it sounds like they also gave him a super realistic view of what it's like to be famous 👀. I mean, who hasn't seen the stress and effects on relationships firsthand? It makes sense that he'd question whether he wanted to pursue show business 🤷‍♂️.

What I love about his documentary is that its not just about him, but also about his parents and how they shaped his career 📚. It's like, he's not just talking about himself, he's talking about the people who helped shape him into the person he is today 👫. And it sounds like he's really reflecting on what went wrong with that film 🎥, like cutting out his daughter Ella - that must've been a tough choice 💔.

I think its so cool that Stiller is showing us that even though he's super successful now, he still has flaws and makes mistakes 🤦‍♂️. It makes him more relatable and human 😊. And I love that the documentary is like, this intimate look at his family legacy and how it's helped shape him into the person he is today 💖.

🤔 I feel bad for Ben Stiller, growing up around all that Hollywood drama must've been super tough for a kid 🙅‍♂️. His parents were legends in their own right, but you can't help but wonder if being in the public eye affected Ella's life when she was younger too... I hope she's doing okay 💕. The way he talks about his perfectionism and obsession with work is so relatable, it's like he's saying we've all been there, done that 😩. It's great to see him reflecting on this now, maybe it'll help him make better choices in the future 🤞.

I gotta say, Ben Stiller's doc is giving me all the feels. It's crazy how he grew up with parents who were basically comedy legends and still managed to see the darker side of fame firsthand. I mean, who wouldn't want to be in his shoes, right? 🤷‍♂️ But what really gets me is when he talks about cutting his daughter out of that film. It's like, you're this successful actor, director, and all-around Hollywood royalty, but you still mess up a family thing like that? 😳 I can see why it weighs on him, though. Perfectionism can be a real killer, especially when it comes to your relationships. Kudos to him for owning up to it and having an honest conversation with his daughter about it. And at the end of the day, it's clear he's learned from that experience and is now more appreciative of the importance of family outside of the spotlight 💕

I'm literally so touched by Ben Stiller's new docu about his parents... it's like he's finally opening up about all the emotions he must've been bottling up for years 🤗. I mean, can you even imagine growing up with your parents being super famous and having to deal with the stress of living in the public eye? It's crazy how much it affects their relationships and kids... Ben's decision to cut his daughter out of 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' still makes me go "omg what was he thinking?!?" 🤯 But at the same time, I get why he did it - perfectionism and obsession with work can be so damaging. It's beautiful how he's reflecting on this now and acknowledging how important relationships are outside of his career... I'm getting all teary-eyed just thinking about it 😭🎥
