Black Phone 2 review – hit horror sequel lumbers toward Elm Street

Blumhouse's attempt to revive The Black Phone franchise with its sequel has fallen flat, as it tries to milk a mediocre horror foundation for all it's worth. Writer-director Scott Derrickson and co-writer C Robert Cargill have taken the series in an unconvincing direction, turning a flesh-and-blood villain into a supernatural one that never quite materializes.

The Grabber, played once again by Ethan Hawke with a swishy flair, is now a ghostly figure with abilities to cross over from dreams to reality. However, his unsettling presence is consistently undermined by convoluted and confusing rules that hinder his ability to terrify audiences. Unlike Freddy Krueger, the Grabber lacks humor and genuinely frightening moments, leaving him feeling more like a caricature than a menacing foe.

The sequel's attempts to add depth and backstory to both the protagonist Finn (Mason Thames) and the antagonist Grabber only serve to overcomplicate the narrative, making it feel busier and less engaging. The film also relies on contrived scene-setting and an unnecessary religious element that feels like a desperate attempt to appeal to a wider audience.

The result is a sequel that feels overstuffed and unwieldy, with too much repetition and not enough scares. Even Ethan Hawke's presence can't save the day, as he's often buried under layers of exposition and poor storytelling choices. The film's tone veers wildly from atmospherically grand to cringe-worthy, with an 8mm texture effect that feels like a stylistic gimmick rather than an organic choice.

Ultimately, Black Phone 2 is a low-lift effort that fails to live up to the promise of its predecessor. At just under two hours, it's a needlessly long and unconvincing argument for a franchise that never quite materialized. Unless you're a die-hard fan of The Conjuring or Blumhouse franchises, there's little reason to get on board with this sequel.

I don't think they fully captured the vibe of the first Black Phone movie 😐. I mean, the Grabber is still super unsettling but it feels like they tried too hard to make him more supernatural and not scary at all 🤣. And what's up with the rules? It's like they couldn't decide how he was supposed to work 🙄. For me, it's always been about that tension and the atmosphere of the first one 👻. This sequel just doesn't have that same chill 😒.

omg i was so hyped for this sequel but it sounds like it just fell flat 🤕 the grabber is literally so underrated and ethan hawke is always a great addition to any horror movie - what was blumhouse thinking with this direction tho?? 🤔 the rules for the grabber's powers are just too convoluted and confusing, it's hard to take him seriously as a villain 😂 i'm gonna have to rewatch the first one now, maybe i missed something or misremembered 🎬

ugh dont even know what to say about black phone 2 i mean i went into it hyped cause ethan hawke was back but like scott derickson mustve had a bad day when he was writing this stuff the grabber is literally just a ghost with too many rules and its all over the place meanwhile finn just becomes a paper doll with no character development whatsoever 8mm texture effect tho i guess that's something lol

Ugh I was so hyped for the Black Phone 2 but it sounds like they completely missed the mark 🤦‍♂️. I mean, who thought turning a flesh-and-blood villain into a ghostly figure would be a good idea? It just doesn't make sense 🙄 and the rules they came up with are super confusing. Ethan Hawke's character always felt like an underdog to me but even he can't save this mess 😔. I loved the first one so much, it was such a creepy and fun ride, but this sequel just feels like they're trying too hard to be all deep and stuff 🤯. And what's up with the 8mm texture effect? Sounds like some random gimmick they thought would make it edgy 💁‍♂️. Anyways, I'd say skip this one unless you're a total fan of Blumhouse 🚫

😐 I was really hyped for the sequel but now I'm kinda disappointed... I mean, Ethan Hawke is still awesome as the Grabber, but it feels like they tried too hard to make him all supernatural and stuff. The rules just don't add up and it makes him less scary. And omg, who thought adding a religious element would be a good idea? 🙄 It's like they're trying to appeal to everyone instead of just making a creepy horror movie. I get it, sequels can be hit or miss, but this one just feels like a waste of potential... 👎

idk why they tried 2 make The Black Phone 2 so convoluted 🤯 it feels like they're trying 2 milk the franchise 4 all it's worth instead of making a decent movie 🎥 ethan hawke's character, The Grabber, is literally just a ghost with no real threat 🕷️ and the plot's all over the place 🗺️ i mean, who needs that many twists & turns? 😩

idk man... i was so hyped for the new black phone movie 🤯 but now im just confused 😂 anyway did u know that blumhouse produces like 40+ movies a year and most of them gross less than $10m worldwide? that's wild 🤑 meanwhile this sequel is expected to do what, like 20-30% of its budget in ticket sales 🎥 also i just found out that the Grabber's supposed "abilities" are actually just a rehashing of other horror movie tropes 🙄 and the film's Rotten Tomatoes score is already at 22% 🤕

Ugh I'm so disappointed in Black Phone 2 🤦‍♂️ it feels like they're just rehashing the same ideas and trying to milk the franchise for all it's worth 😒 Ethan Hawke is still awesome, but even he can't save this mess 💔 The supernatural twist was a total misfire and made the Grabber feel like a joke 🤣 And don't even get me started on how convoluted the rules are... I mean I'm no expert on horror movies, but it felt like they were trying to check off every horror cliche at once 😅 At least The Conjuring franchise is consistent, you know what you're getting with that one 🙏

I'm kinda disappointed in Black Phone 2 🤕, I mean the first one was pretty solid but this sequel just doesn't hit the mark. I get it, they're trying to expand the world and give us more backstory, but like you said, it feels forced and overcomplicated. The Grabber's whole ghostly thing is cool, but then they go and make him all convoluted and rules don't really work. And don't even get me started on the tone - it's like they can't decide if they're making a horror movie or just trying to be artsy 🎥. Give me some good ol' fashioned scares any day!

I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY WOULDN'T JUST LEAVE THE GRABBER ALONE!!! ETHAN HAWKE'S GOT THIS ROLE DOWN PAT AND NOW IT FEELS LIKE THEY'RE TRYING TO RUIN IT WITH THESE WEIRD SUPERNATURAL TWISTS 🤦‍♂️. AND THE TONE IS ALL OVER THE PLACE, IT'S LIKE THEY'RE TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYBODY BUT END UP PLEASING NO ONE 😐. GIVE ME A SIMPLE, CREEPY STORY ANY DAY, THIS FRANCHISE JUST WOULDN'T WORK 🚫

I'm so sorry I missed the thread 🙈, but I just rewatched Black Phone 2 and I gotta say, it was such a disappointment 🤕. They totally dropped the ball on what made the first one so scary - that creepy atmosphere and tension. Now it's all over-the-top and feels like they're trying too hard to be spooky 😅. And don't even get me started on the "rules" of the Grabber's powers... I mean, can someone just clarify how that works? 🤔 Ethan Hawke is great, but he deserves better than this messy script 🤷‍♂️. I'm still waiting for a good horror franchise to come along and scare me again 😅

I gotta agree that the sequel fell flat 🤔... wait, no I don't think it did 😒. I mean, who needs a scary villain when you have Ethan Hawke just being his usual swishy self? 👍 The Grabber's supernatural abilities actually sounded kinda cool in theory, but in practice they're just too weird and inconsistent 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on how overcomplicated the story got... I'm all for some backstory and depth, but not at the expense of a good scare 😅.

But then again, maybe I was expecting too much from Blumhouse and Scott Derrickson? They've been killing it (no pun intended) with other horror franchises 🎃. The Grabber's lack of humor is defo a misstep, though... I mean, who wants to watch a villain that's just too serious all the time? 😒. And what was up with the 8mm texture effect, anyway? Too gimmicky or not enough effort put into it? 🤷‍♂️

I don't know, man... maybe I'm just out of touch with horror fans these days 😅. What did you guys think of Black Phone 2? Did it live up to the hype for you? 🤔

I'm kinda sad to hear the new Black Phone 2 didn't quite hit the mark 🤔🎃...but hey, I guess it's not all bad? 😊 I mean, Ethan Hawke is still involved and that's always a plus in my book! 😄 Maybe they can just reboot the whole thing and try again from scratch? 🔄 That'd be a silver lining for fans who loved the first one...and who knows, maybe they'll get it right next time! 💫

omg i was literally hyped for the new black phone but now im soooo underwhelmed 🤔 like what happened to the grabber?? he just went from being this creepy human villain to a ghostly figure with superpowers and it just didnt work 🌑️ ethan hawke is still amazing tho but even he cant save this mess 😩 and dont even get me started on the plot twists... they were so convoluted i had to rewind like 5 times to figure out what was going on 😭 ugh, blumhouse needs to step up their game next time 🤷‍♀️

idk what's going on with blumhouse anymore 🤔 they just can't seem to make a decent horror movie no matter how much money they throw at it 🤑 black phone 2 is literally the definition of a lazy sequel, just rehashing old ideas and adding in random nonsense 😴 ethan hawke cant save this one either he's wasted on too much exposition and cringe-worthy dialogue 🤣 and honestly who thought adding a supernatural twist to the grabber was a good idea? it just makes him feel like a caricature of himself 👻

I'm shocked they thought adding supernatural rules would make the Grabber more terrifying 🤯... like we haven't seen that before in every other horror movie. And Ethan Hawke just can't carry this film anymore, poor guy is stuck in a never-ending loop of exposition 💀. At least The Conjuring films know how to keep it scary and focused, this one feels like they're trying too hard to please everyone 🎥. It's time for Blumhouse to move on from this franchise, or at least bring some fresh blood to the table 👻.
