Trump's Rhetoric Reaches Fever Pitch as White House Press Secretary Goes After Democrats with Vile Accusations.
The president's long-standing habit of disparaging his opponents has escalated in recent days. In early October, Republican officials disseminated a web article calling out the Democratic Party, describing it as comprised mainly of "hate," "evil," and even Satan. A week later, Trump himself declared that Democrats are guided by "the devil's ideology."
However, what sets this episode apart is the extreme vitriol that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has unleashed upon her opponents. Recently, Leavitt accused Democrats of being comprised largely of Hamas terrorists, undocumented immigrants, and violent criminals during an interview on Fox News.
Interestingly, this style of rhetoric bears striking resemblance to comments made by Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election campaign. In a speech at Iowa's Democratic Party dinner event, she expressed disdain for supporters of then-candidate Donald Trump, stating that "half" of them could be classified as part of what she termed "the basket of deplorables." Specifically, Clinton identified this group with characteristics such as being racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, and Islamaphobic.
Clinton's remarks were met with fierce opposition from Republican officials who deemed her comments too harsh. Despite the criticism, it is telling that Democrats have been vocal in denouncing Leavitt's recent vitriolic outbursts, labeling them "out of control" and "demented."
One prominent Democrat, Rep. Greg Casar, took things a step further by calling on Leavitt to resign due to her vicious attacks against tens of millions of Americans. Similarly, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries described Leavitt's behavior as both uninformed and dishonest.
While Trump's rhetoric about Democrats has indeed intensified in recent days, it is noteworthy that his chief spokesperson is taking the same extreme tone that he himself used to criticize Clinton nine years ago.
