Elon Musk’s Twitter promised a purge of blue check marks. Instead he singled out one account | CNN Business

Elon Musk's plan for a Twitter purge of blue check marks has taken an unexpected turn, with the billionaire CEO singling out one high-profile account from a major publication he dislikes. Instead of carrying out his threat, Twitter appears to have targeted the New York Times' main account, which had previously refused to pay for verification.

As part of its new verification system, Twitter now requires users who want to stay verified to join the platform's Twitter Blue subscription service and pay $8 per month. However, most legacy blue check holders found that their verification marks had not disappeared but were instead appended with a new label reading: "This account is verified because it's subscribed to Twitter Blue or is a legacy verified account." This change has raised concerns about the clarity of the verification process, as users are now unclear whether verified accounts are notable individuals or simply users who have paid to join Twitter Blue.

The New York Times' main account lost its blue check over the weekend after Elon Musk took to Twitter to respond to a meme posted by an actor who had engaged with him. Musk's tweet, "Oh ok, we'll take it off then," was followed by a series of attacks on the Times and journalists in general.

The move is part of a larger campaign by Musk to eliminate "legacy" blue checks from users verified under Twitter's old system. He has been threatening this change since shortly after buying Twitter last fall and has presented it as a way of treating everyone equally. However, critics argue that the new system could make it easier for people to scam or impersonate high-profile users.

The controversy highlights Musk's tendency to guide decisions about the platform by whim rather than policy. Twitter's blue bird logo at the top of the site was also replaced with doge, a meme representing the cryptocurrency dogecoin, which Musk has promoted. The price of dogecoin shot up 20% on Monday following this move.

As experts warn that reserving verification for paid users may not reduce the number of bots on the site, Musk's strategy is likely to continue to spark controversy and confusion among Twitter users.

OMG u guys!! 🤯 I'm literally FREAKING OUT right now!!! Elon Musk is at it AGAIN with his crazy Twitter purge plan!!! 🚫👀 So like he was gonna take away blue check marks from everyone, but NOPE! He just targeted The New York Times' main account for some reason 🤔 and now they're all confused because their verification labels are all weirded out 😂. Like what even is the deal? Can't we just have clear verification labels or something?! 💡 I'm so done with Elon's antics, can't he just make up his mind already?! 🙄 And btw, dogecoin is back in the game! 🐶💸 Anyone else feeling me on this?! 😂

I'm so frustrated with Elon Musk's latest move 🤯... I was wondering how Twitter would handle this change, but I didn't think they'd target a major publication like The New York Times 📰. It seems like a huge double standard - they're treating everyone equally, right? But seriously, who makes the call on whether an account gets to keep their blue check mark? Shouldn't it be about how credible and trustworthy the content is? I'm worried that this new system will just make the platform more confusing for users... and what's up with the doge logo 🐕? Like, I get it, Musk likes it, but come on! Can we just have a simple way to verify accounts without all these twists and turns? 🤦‍♀️

lol what a weird move by Elon! 🤣 i dont get why he would take out ny times' blue check just cuz they refused to pay for it tho 🤑 anyway, this whole thing got me thinking - if u gotta pay 8 bucks a month 2 stay verified, doesnt that sound like a total scam? 😒 and what about all the bots on there already? wont paying 8 bucks make 'em legit too? 🤔

I'm low-key surprised that Twitter went after the NY Times instead of just Musk targeting those legacy blue check holders 🤔. It feels like Twitter is trying to do some damage control while also keeping their hands clean, you know? The new system's a mess, and it's already giving people an excuse to troll around with fake verification labels 💬. And can we talk about how the dogecoin meme just crashed into the site? 🐶 I mean, I get why Musk would wanna hype up dogecoin, but do they have to make everyone else wanna join in on the fun too? 😂

idk why elon musk gotta be so extra about this twitter purge lol 😂 he's basically making it easier for scammers to impersonate legit accounts just by saying "hey we're gonna make everyone equal" 🤷‍♂️ it's like, dude you can't just dictate rules based on your mood and expect everything to work out fine 🙄 also what's with the doge logo 🐕 is he trying to distract us from the fact that verification system is all wonky now? 🤔

omg what a mess now that theyre just adding a label instead of actually removing legacy checks its like they didnt even think this one thru 🤦‍♂️ and whats up with elon being all unpredictable? first he wants to punish accounts who dont pay for verification now hes just slapping a label on them meanwhile the prices went up for twitter blue again like 5 times this year lol 😒

omg, what's going on with Elon Musk and Twitter 🤯?! so he changes the verification system and suddenly high-profile accounts like the New York Times are like "wait, we're not verified anymore?!" 📣 it's just weird. i mean, i get that he wants to make everyone equal, but does he have to pick on a major publication just because they didn't want to pay for the fancy blue check mark? 🤷‍♀️ the new label is kinda confusing too - is it just me or do users think verified accounts are notable individuals or just people who paid $8/month? 🤔 and can we talk about how this whole thing is being run by whim rather than policy? it's just not good for the platform, you know? 📊 anyway, I'm keeping an eye on this one...

I'm totally confused about this whole thing 🤯. So Elon Musk is trying to get rid of those blue checks, but now it seems like he's just playing a prank on us 😂. First, he said he was gonna purge all the legacy checks, and then suddenly he's got no problem with one big publication having their check back 💸. And what's up with this new label thing? It's like they're saying "Hey, we might not be cool anymore, but we'll still pay you to stay verified" 🤑. I mean, I get it, some people do pay for those blue checks, but come on, can't we just have a system that makes sense? 🤔.

OMG I'm literally livid about what Elon Musk just did with Twitter 🤯! So he was going to take away blue checks from verified accounts but then went and targeted The New York Times instead 📰. And now they have this weird label thingy on their account... it's just so extra 😒. And can we talk about how confusing this whole verification process is now? Like, are verified accounts even notable anymore or are they just people who've paid to join Twitter Blue 💸? I'm worried about bots getting in and impersonating big names 🤖. And what's with the doge logo 🐶... it's just so weird. Anyway, I think this whole thing is a total mess 🙅‍♀️.

I'm telling you, this whole thing just reeks of a publicity stunt 🤣. Elon Musk's all about generating buzz and raking in that dogecoin cash 💸. I mean, who does he think he is, tampering with the verification process like it's his own personal playground? And now the NY Times account is gone without a word... sounds like a PR stunt to me 📰.

The truth is, this whole "Twitter Blue" thing just smells like a money grab 🤑. Musk wants you to shell out $8 a month for the "privilege" of being verified, but let's be real, anyone can pay that price 🔒. The problem isn't "legacy" blue checks; it's all these bots and scammers who'll be enabled by this new system 🤖.

I'm not convinced Musk actually cares about eliminating bots or treating everyone equally 💔. This is just a way to stir up controversy, keep the chatter going, and line his pockets with dogecoin cash 🐕. Mark my words, this whole thing will blow over in a few weeks when people realize they're being had 🙄.

omg can u believe elon musk just gave the NY times account a blue check demotion lol like who does that? 🤣 i mean seriously though what's next? will he start fact-checking tweets or something? 😂 this whole thing is a mess and it's all because of his ego. twitter is already a hot mess, why do we need more chaos? 🙄 and btw the doge logo at the top of the site? are u kidding me? 🐶👀

Ugh 🤯, I'm so confused about this new change on Twitter! I've seen some people paying $8 a month just to keep their blue checkmark, but I don't think it's fair that they're not verified in the same way as everyone else anymore 🙄. It's like Elon Musk is playing games with us and making it hard to know who's who on the platform 😒. And what's up with dogecoin? I thought it was just a meme, but now people are actually using it for real money 💸. I guess that's what happens when you have a billionaire CEO running around 🤑. Can't he just stick to one plan for once? 🤦‍♀️

I'm so confused about what's going on with Twitter's new verification system 🤔💡. I mean, if I just subscribe to Twitter Blue for $8 a month, does that mean I'm verified too? Like, what's the point of even having blue check marks if anyone can pay for it? It feels like a total scam 🤑. And now the NYT's main account lost its check, which is weird since they were already paying for verification... or at least, trying to 💸. This whole thing just makes me wonder how Musk is making these decisions without even thinking about the bigger picture 🤯. Can we please just have some clarity around what it means to be verified on Twitter? 😩

omg u guys i cant even believe whats happening on twitter rn like elon musk is trying to get rid of those blue check marks but now hes gone and done it with the new york times main account i mean who does that tho?! 🤯 i was watching this whole thing unfold and i was literally laughing because i thought he was just messing with them but then it happened. so apparently its not just some random account thats gonna get axed, its major publications like nytimes which makes sense since musk has been saying all these anti-media things

anyway idk about this new verification system elon came up with it sounds kinda sketchy to me but i guess its all about equal treatment and whats good for the goose right? 🤷‍♂️ but honestly im so confused now how am i supposed to know which accounts r legit verified and which are just paying users like @elonmusk has been saying we shouldnt care who pays or not lol i mean dont get me wrong musk is genius in some ways but omg the way hes running this thing is insane 🚀

🤔 I'm not sure if this new verification system from Twitter makes a whole lot of sense... it just seems like another example of how Musk is disrupting things without necessarily thinking through the consequences 🙃. The fact that they're making legacy blue check holders pay $8 per month to keep their label is just a bit confusing, and now users are wondering if verified accounts are notable individuals or just paying customers 🤑.

The targeting of the New York Times' main account does seem like a pretty clear overreaction, especially given how Musk responded to that meme from an actor 🤷‍♂️. And what's up with replacing Twitter's logo with dogecoin? It's just weird 🐶. I'm not sure if this change is going to reduce the number of bots on the site, but it's definitely going to create more controversy and confusion among users 👀.

🤔 I'm like "wait, what just happened with the NYT account? 📰 They didn't even pay for verification and now it's got this weird label? 🤷‍♂️ That's kinda lame. I mean, if you're gonna do a purge of blue check marks, do it right, ya know? 💯 But instead Musk just screws up and targets the wrong account... 😂 Guess that's what happens when you're more in love with dogecoin than making good decisions 🐶💸"

I'm low-key confused about this whole blue check mark thing 🤔. I get what Elon is trying to do, but I think he's gonna end up making more problems than he solves. Like, what even is the point of paying $8 a month for a verification label? Is it just gonna be a fancy badge or something? And how is this supposed to stop bots from impersonating influencers? It sounds like a giant target on their backs 🚫.

And now I'm reading that the NYT's account got its blue check taken away, and I'm just thinking... what about all the legit journalists out there who can't afford to shell out 8 bucks a month for verification? Like, isn't Twitter supposed to be a platform for important voices or something?

I don't know, man. Elon's always been all over the place with his decisions on Twitter 🤯. Can't he just stick to a plan for once?

I'm so confused by this new system now 🤯. I mean, if you wanna be verified, you gotta pay $8 a month? That's kinda steep for me 🤑. But at the same time, it makes sense that they'd want to make some money out of it. I just wish they'd been more clear about what "verified" means now... is it still like before or are we all just paying users? 🤔 It's not like they're trying to scam anyone or anything, but at the same time, it's hard for me to trust that these paid users aren't just bots in disguise 🤖. And can you believe Musk actually replaced Twitter's logo with dogecoin now 😂?! I mean, I get why he likes it, but come on...

OMG I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY ELON MUSK WOULD DO THIS 🤔!!! HE'S ALREADY CAUSED SO MUCH TURMOIL ON THE PLATFORM WITH ALL THESE CHANGES AND NOW HE'S TARGETING A MAJOR PUBLICATION LIKE THE NEW YORK TIMES?! 📰 IT'S NOT FAIR TO JUST TAKE AWAY THEIR VERIFICATION MARK WITHOUT GIVING THEM A CHANCE TO EXPLAIN OR APPEAL 😩. AND WHATS NEXT? IS HE GOING TO TAKE AWAY VERIFICATION FROM ALL THE LEGACY BLUE CHECK HOLDERS WHO HAVEN'T EVEN PAID FOR TWITTER BLUE YET?! 🤯 IT JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO ME.
