The World Health Organization's chief, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has warned that the dire health crisis in Gaza will last for "generations to come" unless more aid is urgently provided. The Strip is experiencing a "fatal combination" of disease, injuries, and famine that has left its healthcare system in shambles.
A massive influx of aid was required to address the needs of the Gaza population, but so far it's been insufficient, according to Dr Tedros. The situation on the ground is bleak, with thousands of Palestinians waiting for medical evacuation flights to be increased.
The UN has previously estimated that it will cost $70bn (Β£52bn) to reconstruct Gaza, and 10% of this figure would need to go towards its badly damaged healthcare system.
Dr Tedros has called for an end to the conflict and the delivery of aid without conditions or interference from either side. He also warned that supplies intended to rebuild Gaza's health system have been confiscated at the border due to concerns over their potential dual use.
The situation in Gaza is dire, with widespread destruction, poverty, hunger, and a collapsed healthcare system. Thousands of Palestinians are waiting for medical evacuation flights, and 700 people have already died while waiting.
Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza last month, resulting in the deaths of at least 68,229 Palestinians. Dr Tedros has called on all sides to respect the ceasefire deal brokered by the US.
The aid crisis in Gaza is not just an humanitarian issue but also a major political concern for the international community. It's imperative that we take immediate action to address this devastating situation and ensure that those affected receive the support they need, said Dr Tedros.

its like the conflict just keeps feeding into itself. dr tedros is right to say we need an end to this war and no conditions or interference from either side... but at the same time, $70bn sounds like a LOT of money

. We're talking billions of dollars needed to rebuild the healthcare system, and it's not just about throwing money at the problem - we need to get there without any conditions or politics getting in the way

But seriously, what can we do? Can we make a difference? It's not just about the aid itself - it's about standing up for these people and saying that their lives matter too

. And it's not just the number of dead that's the problem, it's the fact that the healthcare system is basically non-existent there. Like, we're talking catastrophic levels of damage

Can you imagine having a doctor's appointment with an open wound... I mean, war zone? 700 people waiting to be evacuated and only 10% of the $70 billion rebuild fund goes to healthcare? That's like giving a pizza a single slice and expecting it to hold all the toppings

. Like, how can we not trust that the aid is going to be used to help people, not to arm conflicts? The UN estimate of $70bn needed to rebuild Gaza's healthcare system sounds huge, but it's just a drop in the ocean compared to the devastation they're dealing with. We need to get our act together and stop making this situation worse
