Five-year-old boy and father detained by ICE return home to Minnesota

A US five-year-old boy and his father who were detained by ICE during President Donald Trump's immigration raids have been released.

Liam Conejo Ramos, 5, and his dad Adrian, were held at a Texas detention centre for 10 days before being ordered to be released by a US District Judge Fred Biery on Saturday. However, the pair were still detained until Tuesday when Representative Joaquin Castro, a Texas Democrat, picked them up from the facility and escorted them home.

The two asylum seekers had been targeted during one of President Trump's mass deportations, where immigration officials arrested over 1,000 people, including minors. The story sparked global outrage after photos emerged of Liam being held by ICE officers with his backpack on, which were shared widely online.

The Department of Homeland Security has denied the allegations that federal immigration officers used a five-year-old boy as "bait" to catch his father, claiming instead that Adrian fled from agents and left Liam in their driveway.

US District Judge Fred Biery had previously ruled that the government's actions were "traumatizing children" and had violated their rights under the US Constitution. The judge described the pursuit of daily deportation quotas as "ill-conceived and incompetently-implemented", citing the Fourth Amendment, which protects against unreasonable searches and seizures.

Representatives from both parties have been quick to condemn the incident, with US Representative Ilhan Omar posting a photo on social media of herself holding Liam's Spider-Man backpack, saying "Welcome home Liam".

ICE needs to retrain their officers, that little kid was just 5 ๐Ÿคฏ. A backpack shouldn't be enough reason for him to get caught in the middle of all this drama... or so I thought when they said his dad just left it on the driveway lol nope not buying it ๐Ÿ‘Ž

๐Ÿค” I mean, come on, 10 days in detention for a 5-year-old and his dad? It's just outrageous. The whole thing sounds like a total mess from the start. And don't even get me started on the department trying to claim that they only used the kid as bait because his dad was fleeing - that's some wild excuse if you ask me! ๐Ÿ™„

And what really gets my goat is that it took an entire judge and a representative from one party for these people to be released. I mean, shouldn't we be doing better than this? We're talking about a kid here who was traumatized just because of his dad's immigration status. It's a total shame.

The fourth amendment is clear on this - the government can't just go around detaining people without probable cause and then try to use tactics like baiting kids to get what they want. It's just not right, you know? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿค ICE needs to get its priorities straight. A 5-year-old kid getting used as bait to catch his dad? That's just wrong ๐Ÿšซ. The fact that the government said his dad was fleeing from them when he left Liam in their driveway is still suspicious ๐Ÿค”. Asylum seekers have a right to protection, not exploitation ๐Ÿ’•. It's great that Rep Castro stepped up and got them out safely ๐Ÿ‘.

.. this whole thing is just crazy ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, it's great that they're safe now and all, but can't we just have a little bit of common sense when it comes to deportation stuff? 10 days with a 5-year-old holding on to his backpack like it's his life preserver? That's just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜ญ. And the government's whole "he ran away" excuse doesn't even make sense - what kind of parents do that? ๐Ÿค”

And you know what really gets me is how everyone's rushing to praise Rep Joaquin Castro for doing his job, but where were he and other reps when these people needed help in the first place? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ I mean, we're supposed to be a country of laws and all that, but sometimes it feels like we just make things up as we go along ๐Ÿ˜•.

Man this whole thing is just wild ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, think about it - these two guys are asylum seekers trying to make a new life for themselves in the US and they get caught up in one of Trump's mass deportations? It's crazy how quickly they were picked up by Rep Castro and taken home like that. And what really gets me is the government saying that the dad ran away from them and left his kid behind - come on, who falls for that? ๐Ÿ™„ The fact that a 5-year-old was being held by ICE officers with his backpack on just shows you where their priorities are at. And now they're trying to spin it like it's not their fault? ๐Ÿ˜’

๐Ÿ™ This whole thing is just so messed up... Like, can't we treat humans as human beings instead of just numbers? I mean, a 5-year-old boy being used as bait for his dad's deportation is just horrific. And the fact that they were held in detention for 10 days without knowing what was happening to them or when they'd be released... it's just heartbreaking.

And don't even get me started on the government's response - trying to spin this as if Liam and his dad did something wrong by fleeing from agents is just laughable. I mean, come on, if you're going to deport someone, make sure you do it right! This whole thing has been a nightmare for them and their family.

Glad that Representative Castro stepped in to help and got them home safely, though. ๐Ÿ™Œ And kudos to US District Judge Biery for speaking up about the government's actions being "traumatizing children" - we need more people like him who are willing to stand up for what's right! ๐Ÿ‘

lol what's good fam ๐Ÿ˜‚ this whole thing is wild. Like, who does ICE think they are? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ detaining a 5-yr-old kid as bait for his dad's arrest? that's straight up crazy talk. i mean, i get it, immigration laws need to be followed, but not at the expense of innocent kids like lil' Liam. ๐Ÿค and btw, who lets a 5-year-old wander around with an ice pack on his backpack in the middle of nowhere? ๐Ÿ˜‚ seems like someone needs some parenting lessons. ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค” This whole ordeal is absolutely appalling and raises serious concerns about the treatment of asylum seekers, particularly minors, in the US. The fact that a 5-year-old boy was being held as "bait" to catch his father is just heartbreaking and unacceptable ๐Ÿšซ. It's shocking that the Department of Homeland Security would deny any wrongdoing when faced with overwhelming evidence of Liam's traumatic experience. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

The Fourth Amendment protections are clearly in place for a reason, and it's astonishing that the government would prioritize deportation quotas over human rights. The judge's ruling that this is "ill-conceived and incompetently-implemented" is well-deserved ๐Ÿ™Œ.

It's also laudable to see Representative Ilhan Omar taking a stand on social media with a photo of Liam's Spider-Man backpack, symbolizing the welcome home that he so rightfully deserves ๐Ÿ˜Š. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for policy reforms and stricter accountability measures to protect vulnerable populations like asylum seekers ๐Ÿš€

omg this is so wrong they detained a 5 yr old boy with his dad for 10 days its just not right ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿšซ i feel bad for that little kid, he must be scared and confused. why did the police do this to him? didnt they know it wasnt safe for a kid to be held in detention with grownups?

omg what was that even like a total nightmare for lil Liam and his dad i cant even imagine how scary it must've been for them to be caught up in one of those mass deportations 10 days in detention is way too long for a 5 yr old no wonder he was traumatized ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ‘ถ meanwhile the gov dept says they werent using the kid as bait but come on who needs proof when you got pics of him being held by ice officers with his backpack on ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ˜ณ and theres this one rep Ilhan Omar posting a photo of lil Liam's spidey backpack on social media like what even is that kinda thing ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I donโ€™t usually comment but it really breaks my heart that this kid had to go through all that. 10 days in detention is way too long for any child, let alone one whoโ€™s just 5 years old ๐Ÿค•. And the fact that his dad was being targeted because of some mass deportation thing is just crazy. I donโ€™t think we should be treating people like this, regardless of whether they're immigrants or not. The government needs to come up with a better way to handle these situations so families aren't torn apart like this ๐Ÿค. And itโ€™s great that Rep Joaquin Castro stepped in and helped them out โ€“ maybe this incident will make people think twice about how we treat others, especially the most vulnerable among us โค๏ธ.

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ those poor little dude & his dad were detained for 10 days and almost got separated lol. ICE officers gotta do better than that. The judge was right the government is all messed up when it comes to treating asylum seekers like that. They're just trying to get ahead of quotas but they need to think about human lives too ๐Ÿค.

Man, what a typical Tuesday ๐Ÿ™„. So, little Liam gets 'detained' for 10 days and his dad gets to chill in a facility while the kid's stuck with the cops ๐Ÿคฏ. And now he's back home safe and sound, because some dude with a Spider-Man backpack got the whole country talking ๐Ÿ’ฌ. I mean, can you even imagine being that tiny human and having your life turned upside down? It's wild how these mass deportations go around, always targeting families like that... not cool ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Glad to see someone from Congress showed up to rescue him though ๐Ÿ‘. Just hope it didn't leave a lasting impact on the little guy ๐Ÿ˜”.

๐Ÿ˜• This is a nightmare come true. I mean, 10 days with that little dude in detention? It's just wrong. And what really gets me is the whole "father fled from agents" thing - sounds like some dodgy police work to me ๐Ÿค”. But you know what's even more messed up? The system itself. All these people getting picked up, held without a trial... it's just a huge mess. ๐Ÿšฎ And now that the little dude is home with his dad, I hope they both get some much-needed help and counseling to deal with this traumatic experience. We need to do better, you know? ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿ™ 10 days is way too long for a 5-year-old ๐Ÿคฏ. It's crazy how ICE can just do whatever they want without anyone stopping them... I mean, what's the point of having rules if you're not gonna enforce 'em? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's good that someone like Rep. Castro stepped in and got them outta there. And y'know, it's kinda sad that it took a global outrage to make people realize how messed up this situation is... ๐ŸŒŽ

๐Ÿ˜’ that was super unfair to that little kid. I mean, he didn't do anything wrong, just because his dad did something wrong doesn't make him guilty too ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The fact that they held him for 10 days is already traumatic enough, and now this 'bait' stuff? Come on, that's just crazy talk ๐Ÿšซ. And what about the whole 'he left Liam in their driveway' thing? Sounds like a cop-out to me ๐Ÿ™„. I hope Rep Castro was able to get him home safely and get some support for that little dude ๐Ÿ’•.

This is just wrong ๐Ÿ˜”. A 5-year-old kid getting detained by ICE? It's not right. I mean, can you imagine if this happened to your little one? The thought alone gives me the chills ๐Ÿคฏ. And they had him in a backpack like some kinda game or something? It's disgusting. I don't care what the government says, this is just plain cruel. Kids shouldn't have to go through this. They should be protected and taken care of, not used as some kind of tool to catch others. This whole situation is just a mess ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

ICE needs to get its act together ๐Ÿ™„. Detaining a 5-year-old and using him as "bait" is just wrong. I mean, come on! What kind of system does that? And for what? To catch his dad? It's disgusting. The fact that the parents were deported because they didn't want to go back to their home country is bad enough, but adding a 5-year-old into the mix is just cruel. The judge said it was "traumatizing" and I couldn't agree more. And now Liam has been traumatized by being held in a detention centre...

๐Ÿค” I don't know man, it's wild that this little dude was held for 10 days by ICE. I mean, I'm glad he and his dad are safe now, but the whole thing is just crazy. The gov's trying to deport these people and they're using tactics like holding a kid hostage? It's just not right ๐Ÿšซ. And yeah, the fact that they used the kid as "bait" is just sickening. It's like they think kids are just pawns or something.

At the same time, I don't think we should be surprised by this stuff. ICE has been doing some questionable things for years, and it's only getting more attention now because of social media ๐Ÿ“ฑ. The thing is, we need to keep pushing for reform and making sure our leaders are holding themselves accountable.

I'm glad Rep. Castro stepped in and helped get Liam and his dad out of there. It just goes to show that one person can make a difference when it comes to standing up for what's right ๐Ÿ’ช. But we still have a long way to go, and I'm not holding my breath on any real change anytime soon ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.
