Russian Deputy Head of Military Intelligence Lt Gen Vladimir Alexeyev has regained consciousness after undergoing successful surgery following a shooting attack in Moscow, according to reports by Russian media. The 64-year-old general was shot several times in the chest and abdomen while on his landing in an apartment block in the north-western outskirts of the capital. He had been rushed to hospital in serious condition on Friday morning.
Doctors said that after undergoing surgery, Alexeyev was placed in a medically induced coma before regaining consciousness. "It can be cautiously stated that the threat to [Alexeyev's] life has passed", medical sources have reported. The general is the latest high-ranking military figure to be targeted near Moscow since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Two suspects are reportedly under arrest and will soon be taken for questioning, according to Russian officials who blame Kyiv for the attack. However, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has denied involvement, saying that Kyiv had nothing to do with Friday's shooting.
The US has proposed talks between Moscow and Kyiv negotiators on American soil, "probably in Miami", according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The US wants the war to end by June, he added. However, there was no immediate comment from Washington or Moscow.
In recent months, several high-ranking Russian military officers have been targeted near Moscow, including a general who was killed when an explosive device detonated under his car in December. Ukrainian President Zelensky has claimed that Kyiv is responsible for some attacks on Russian military figures.
