Iran announces official end to 10-year-old nuclear agreement

Iran has officially terminated its decade-long nuclear agreement, marking the end of international efforts to curb the country's atomic ambitions.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), formally known as the 2015 deal, was supposed to limit Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. However, following US withdrawal from the pact in 2018 and the reimposition of UN sanctions, Tehran has been stepping up its nuclear programme.

The agreement's expiration date was set for October 18, exactly 10 years after UN Security Council Resolution 2231 adopted it. The "termination day" brought an end to all provisions of the deal, including restrictions on Iran's nuclear programme and related mechanisms. According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, from now on, "all of the provisions [of the 2015 deal] are considered terminated".

Despite this official end, Iran's foreign ministry stated that Tehran "firmly expresses its commitment to diplomacy". The country has repeatedly said it remains open to diplomacy with the US, provided Washington offers guarantees against military action during any potential talks.

European powers have expressed a desire to restart negotiations to find a new, comprehensive agreement. However, relations between the west and Iran remain strained, with Western governments and Israel accusing Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been trying to verify Iran's nuclear compliance, but its efforts have been hindered by Tehran's refusal to cooperate following the parliament's passage of a bill to refuse cooperation. The "snapback" provision led to the reimposition of UN sanctions, which the EU and its member states are seeking to address through diplomatic means.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Iran's nuclear ambitions can be effectively addressed without resorting to military action or severe economic penalties.

man this is soooo familiar... it feels like we're right back in 2015 when Obama was negotiating with Iran and everyone was all "let's work together" but then Trump comes along and ruins everything now Iran is just gonna keep on building its nukes and the whole world is just gonna sit there and watch remember when we were all worried about Iraq going nuclear back in 2003? it's like déjà vu all over again, i'm not sure what's more concerning, iran's nukes or the fact that nobody's doing anything to stop them

I remember hearing about these kinds of deals back in my day... like, what was it '95? They were always saying something about countries not being able to reach an agreement on stuff... I don't know how many times we've had this happen with Iran and the west. Everyone's just waiting for the other guy to blink, but sometimes you gotta wonder if anyone's really listening to each other anymore? The US was out of there in '18 and now look what's happening... I'm just so worried about this ... Remember when we used to have a world where diplomacy actually worked? Like back in my day, we had this thing called the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) that was all about reducing nuclear arms... and it did! We didn't have all these international tensions like we do now. I mean, what's going on with Iran is just crazy talk . They're basically saying they can do whatever they want without anyone stopping them? That snapback provision by the UN was meant to be a safety net, not some backdoor for countries to ignore rules and get away with it .

omg i was literally thinking about iran's nuke deal just yesterday and now it's all over... 10 yrs of efforts down the drain, feels like we're back at square one again . i mean, what's next? israel gonna launch a preemptive strike or something? my cousin's uncle works for a think tank and they're all like "we need to address this ASAP" but i'm more concerned about the impact on global oil prices . anywayz, it's gonna be interesting to see how europe tries to navigate this whole situation... hopefully they can get iran back on track without making things worse
