Iran says restrictions on nuclear programme ‘terminated’ as deal expires

Iran has effectively terminated its commitment to restrictions on its nuclear program as a landmark 10-year deal with Western powers officially came to an end. According to Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all provisions related to the agreement, including those limiting the country's nuclear activities and mechanisms, are no longer in effect.

However, in a statement released on Saturday, Tehran reiterated its commitment to diplomacy, saying it remains open to negotiations with world powers as long as they offer guarantees against military action. This stance is reflective of Iran's longstanding position that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and should not be subject to external restrictions.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, was adopted by six world powers – China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States – in 2015. In exchange for lifting international sanctions against Iran, Tehran agreed to limit its nuclear activities.

But when US President Donald Trump withdrew from the agreement in 2018, Washington reinstated sanctions on Iran, leading the country to step up its nuclear program. Despite efforts by the three European powers to revive the deal through diplomatic talks, they have failed so far.

The expiration of the JCPOA has significant implications for global security and the Middle East region, as it may embolden Iranian leaders to further pursue their nuclear ambitions without external constraints. While Iran's stance on diplomacy remains unchanged, there are concerns that Western powers' efforts to restart negotiations will be hindered by ongoing tensions between Tehran and its regional rivals.

The IAEA has expressed concerns about Iran's nuclear stockpile since the start of a war in June, which struck Iranian military sites and killed over 1,000 Iranians. The agency described this lack of verification as a matter of serious concern, highlighting the potential risks of an Iranian nuclear program going unchecked.

With diplomatic efforts currently stalled, it remains to be seen how Iran's stance on its nuclear program will evolve in the coming days.

Wow! This is getting crazy I mean Iran just walked out of the whole thing without even warning anyone 🤯💣 What are they gonna do next? Are they gonna try and build a bomb or what? The world is watching and it's not looking good 🌎😬

omg what's gonna happen now?? 🤯 i feel like iran is at a crossroads and its gonna be so interesting to watch how they navigate this 😅 can we pls get some diplomacy going tho? 🙏 maybe china france germany russia uk us can put their heads together and find a solution that works for everyone? 🤝 let's keep our fingers crossed! 💕

omg what just happened?! 😱 so iran is basically outta the 10 yr nuclear deal and now they're all like "we still wanna negotiate but only if you promise not to bomb us 🤯" sounds kinda suspicious tbh. i mean, usa was right out of the deal in 2018 and look where that got them... sanctions galore 💸 it's gonna be super hard for western powers to get back into talks now. and what about israel? they've been all anti-iran like crazy 🤬 this could get messy real fast. i guess only time will tell how iran's nuclear ambitions play out but for now, let's just say my anxiety levels are through the roof 😅

omg did u no about iran just announced they're outta that 10yr nuclear deal 🤯 like whats next?? i was worried when us left that deal but didnt think it would lead to this 🙄 anyway i guess Iran still wants 2 b diplomatic but only if the west guarantees they wont attack 🤝 its kinda sad cuz i thought we were making progress on global security 👀 and what about china france germany russia uk?? are they even gonna get involved in this mess 😒

🤯 just had a look at some data from 2018 - US withdrawal from the JCPOA resulted in a +50% increase in Iranian nuclear sanctions 🚨! Meanwhile, since 2020, Iran's nuclear stockpile has been steadily rising... 💣 35% more uranium enrichment facilities have been discovered, which is not exactly what you'd call 'peaceful' 😬. I mean, can we really afford to let this situation escalate further? Not to mention the economic costs - a recent study found that if Iran goes nuclear, it could lead to a global trade war worth $5 trillion 📈💸! We need to get negotiations back on track ASAP, or else... 🤯🚨

I'm getting the same feeling about this whole thing like when I was watching that movie "Independence Day" 🚀 back in 1996 and people thought aliens were gonna come and destroy us all 😱. Now it feels like we're back to those same old fears about Iran's nuclear program... just like how we had to live with the threat of nuclear war during the Cold War days ❄️. But you know, I kinda miss those analog times when news didn't move that fast 📺. It feels like everyone's jumping into action without thinking things through 😬.

🤔 so iran just basically says bye bye to the whole deal thing now they're all like "peaceful purposes only" and i'm over here thinking what about all the times they've tried to build nukes before 🚨 meanwhile western powers are all like "but what about security?" and honestly can't even agree on a plan themselves lol 🤷‍♂️

man I'm kinda worried about this Iran thing... they're basically just throwing away all those safeguards that were supposed to keep them from getting a nuke 🤔. And now with all these tensions in the Middle East, it feels like we're playing with fire 🔥. I mean, I get that Iran's been pushing back against the US and Europe, but can't they see how this is gonna escalate into something bigger? 🌪️ It's not just about Iran or the US anymore, it's about global security. We need to find a way to get everyone back to the table for real talks 🤝, otherwise we're gonna have a huge mess on our hands...
