Israeli assault on Palestinian university wounds dozens in West Bank raid

Dozens of students and faculty members at Birzeit University in the occupied West Bank were wounded on Tuesday when Israeli forces stormed the campus, triggering a violent response from Palestinian protesters. The assault, which saw live rounds fired, sound grenades thrown, and tear gas used, left 11 people hospitalised with multiple injuries.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with students and staff trying to escape or shield themselves from the barrage of shots. Law student Youssef Sharawneh told Al Jazeera that he was on campus when Israeli soldiers stormed in, throwing sound grenades and shooting live fire. "I handed back my exam paper empty, left my faculty building, and saw them in front of me," he said, recounting the terrifying moment.

The attack has been condemned by Palestinian authorities, with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education calling it a "flagrant and deliberate violation" of international norms. The Birzeit University administration described the assault as a systematic policy aimed at intimidating students, undermining their right to education, and targeting Palestinian consciousness.

The incident comes on the heels of a student event in solidarity with thousands of Palestinian prisoners held incommunicado in Israeli jails. The Israeli military claimed it targeted a "gathering in support of terrorism" at the university, but eyewitnesses disputed this account. Al Jazeera's reporting found that students were peacefully holding an event, not engaging in any violent activities.

The assault has heightened concerns among Palestinians about the safety and security of educational institutions under Israeli occupation. Palestine's Ministry of Education and Higher Education said the attack would not "break the will of Palestinian students or staff," but instead galvanised their resolve to continue resisting Israeli oppression.

Meanwhile, Israel has cleared a key hurdle in its plans to build a controversial settlement project near East Jerusalem. The government tender for the E1 project has been approved, paving the way for construction to begin within the next month. Critics say the project would effectively cut the occupied West Bank into two, making it impossible to establish a contiguous Palestinian state.

The international community has long considered Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank to be illegal and an obstacle to peace. The E1 project is especially contentious due to its location, which runs from the outskirts of Jerusalem deep into the occupied territory.

Ugh πŸ€” I don't get why everyone's always making a fuss about this stuff... Like, yeah Israel did storm Birzeit University and it was totally wrong, but let's not forget that Palestinians have been protesting against Israeli occupation for years and they're getting increasingly frustrated. The fact is, Israel's settlement plans are super problematic and anyone who thinks they're a good idea needs to take a hard look at history 🀯.

And can we talk about how the international community is always quick to condemn Israel but never really does anything concrete? It's like they just want to tweet about it and expect everyone else to do the heavy lifting. Meanwhile, Palestinians are stuck with no clear solution to their "problem" because of the constant conflict πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

Let's not forget that Israel has a right to exist too (I know, I know, it's a super complicated topic 😬) and sometimes they're going to make decisions that we don't agree with. But can't we try to have a nuanced conversation about this stuff instead of just piling on one side or the other? πŸ€”

Ugh, can't believe this stuff is still happening 🀯. I mean, what's up with these Israeli forces being so aggressive? Like, they storm a campus and start shooting live rounds - that's just unacceptable. And to make matters worse, they're trying to justify it by saying the students were protesting terrorism? Give me a break! πŸ™„ The fact that international norms are clearly not being respected here is just infuriating.

And can we talk about how this affects Palestinian students and staff? Their safety and security should be a top priority, but instead, Israel's always finding ways to escalate tensions. It's like they're trying to intimidate people into not pursuing their education or speaking out against oppression. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education is right - this won't break the will of Palestinians; it'll only galvanize them even more.

And while we're on the topic, can we please talk about the E1 project? Like, how can one settlement project just get greenlit like that? 🀯 It's so infuriating to see Israel pushing forward with its plans to "cut" the occupied West Bank into two. The international community needs to step up and hold them accountable for this kind of behavior. πŸ’ͺ

Ugh, this is getting so old 🀯... I mean, what's up with these Israeli forces? Can't they just chill for one sec? πŸ™„ They're always causing trouble and disrupting peace talks. It's like, can't we all just get along? πŸ˜” The fact that students were just holding a peaceful event to show solidarity with Palestinian prisoners and they got caught in the crossfire is just... wow 🀯... How are you supposed to learn or study when there's always some kind of tension brewing around you? And it's not like these kids didn't have a right to protest, either. They're just trying to make their voices heard πŸ’ͺ...

Anyway, I'm all about supporting the Palestinian cause, but at the same time, I get frustrated with how this whole situation just keeps repeating itself πŸ”„... Can't we find some kind of middle ground or resolution? It's like we're stuck in a never-ending cycle of violence and unrest 🀯. And don't even get me started on the international community not doing more to help πŸ’Έ... Like, come on! We should be supporting peaceful solutions over military actions any day πŸ™...

this is just getting outta hand 🀯 can't they see that these actions are gonna fuel more hate & violence?? we need to focus on education not intimidation tactics πŸ“šπŸ’‘ 11 people hurt & it's all cuz of some students protesting for their rights? πŸ€” what's the point of living under occupation if u cant even be free to express urself? 🌎

Ugh πŸ€•, this Birzeit University attack is so sickening 😑. Can't believe Israeli forces just stormed in and started shooting at students and staff like they were nothing 🚫. I mean, what's the point of even having a university if you can't learn or have your rights respected? πŸ€”

And to make matters worse, this E1 project is like, totally going to mess with any chance of peace between Israel and Palestine 🀯. It's just more proof that Israel doesn't care about anyone but itself πŸ’Έ.

We need to stand with the students and faculty at Birzeit University and show our support for their right to an education without fear of violence πŸ”₯. And we also need to keep pushing against this settlement project, it's like a huge obstacle for peace 🚫.

πŸ€• just saw this news about Birzeit University in the occupied West Bank, it's heartbreaking that students & faculty got hurt during the Israeli military assault 🚨. I don't think they should have stormed the campus like that, it's just scary for everyone involved 😟. The Palestinian people have a right to be educated and express themselves without fear of violence. Hope that the injuries aren't too serious and the students get to continue their studies safely πŸ’ͺ. This incident is just another reminder of the ongoing tensions in the region and how important it is for all parties to find peace πŸ™.

just watched this and my heart went out to those students πŸ€• what's going on over there is just not right it's like they're trying to intimidate them into being quiet about their cause. can't believe the international community isn't doing more to stop these kinds of incidents from happening in the first place πŸ˜” news like this always puts things into perspective, and it's a harsh reminder that there are still people fighting for justice & equality πŸ’ͺ but at the same time, building settlements near East Jerusalem is just so frustrating...like how can you cut off someone's chance at freedom like that? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

πŸ€• just saw this crazy news about Birzeit University get stormed by Israeli forces, like 11 people got hurt πŸ€• what's going on with all these settler projects? can't we talk about something else for once? πŸ™„ i mean, is it really necessary to tear gas and shoot live rounds at a peaceful protest event? 🚫 it's just so messed up...

πŸ€• This is getting outta hand, you know? Can't we just talk things through peacefully anymore? It's like, both sides are stuck and they're just digging in their heels, refusing to listen to each other. And it feels like Israel's got the upper hand right now, with all this settlement stuff and the military actions... it's just really scary for those students at Birzeit University, having to live in fear of getting hurt or arrested every time they try to exercise their rights. 🀝 I mean, what even is the point of education if you can't do it without feeling like you're under siege? And on top of that, this E1 project just adds fuel to the fire... it's like, how are we supposed to expect a peaceful resolution when one side's just building more settlements and expanding its control over land? 🀯 It's hard to see both sides winning here, but at what cost?

just had to see this news about birzeit university 🀯... it's always sad when students are caught in the middle of all this conflict πŸ’”... can't even go to class without being shot at or gassed 😩... and now they're saying it was just a routine operation to intimidate students πŸ™„... like that's supposed to be okay? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ... international norms aren't doing much for these people, are they? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ... and what really gets me is the E1 project 🚧... cutting up the west bank like it's a puzzle piece 😬... can't we just have some peace and stability around here? πŸ™

πŸ€• this is so sad what's going on with Birzeit University 🌹

I made a quick diagram to try and visualize the situation:

+---------------+
| Israeli Forces |
| Storm Campus |
+---------------+
| |
| Tear Gas,
| Live Rounds
| |
+---------------+ +---------------+
| Students & Staff | | Protesters |
| Trying to Escape | | Peacefully |
+---------------+ +---------------+

| Israeli Military
| Says it's a "gathering"

it's so frustrating that the international community hasn't done enough to stop this πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. Israel has been building settlements for years and it's only getting worse πŸŒͺ️.

let's try to raise awareness about this issue and support our Palestinian friends in any way we can πŸ™.
